The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 318 - 310: Lodging a Complaint
Gu Yifeng ignored Mrs. Dong and strode off. The servants in the courtyard dared not breathe loudly, only keeping their heads down. Afterward, they saw Madam rush out from the main courtyard, almost stumbling several times if not for Jingfu’s support.
She hurriedly chased after him.
However, Mrs. Dong wasn’t after Gu Yifeng but headed straight towards Shiyuan Courtyard. Mrs. Gu Sr. was chanting scriptures when she heard the commotion outside. Everyone in the Marquis Mansion knew that Mrs. Gu Sr. was never to be disturbed during her prayers. Seeing the chaos outside, Mrs. Gu Sr. didn’t get angry, knowing something was amiss.
Just as she put down her scripture, Mrs. Dong, with her large belly, barged in. Her attendants supported and reminded her, preventing a fall. As Mrs. Dong reached Mrs. Gu Sr., everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
But Mrs. Dong knelt down clutching her belly. Her stomach was so large that kneeling wasn’t easy, which startled Mrs. Gu Sr., who quickly called someone to support her.
"What are you doing? You’re about to give birth, can’t you speak properly?" Mrs. Gu Sr. stomped her foot angrily.
Mrs. Dong cried, "Madam, you must intervene with the Marquis. I’m at my wit’s end, and he scared me so much."
Upon hearing it was about the Marquis, Nanny Chi and Nanny Chang quickly ordered everyone inside to leave.
Mrs. Gu Sr. also sighed with relief.
"What happened with Dalang? Speak slowly. You are the Madam of this mansion; mind the servants watching. Don’t lose your dignity and status," Mrs. Gu Sr. reminded her.
Tears welled even more in Mrs. Dong’s eyes. "I’m regretting whether being too strict with rules made the Marquis so impulsive now. Madam, you don’t know what he said earlier. He said he’d give up his title and the entire Marquis Mansion for Sister Ning. I understand he loves Sister Ning, but how can he make such a decision? Do you agree with him doing this?"
Mrs. Gu Sr. was stunned, "Dalang told you this?"
Her expression became notably serious.
Seeing this, Mrs. Dong sighed with relief, stopping her sobbing. "Indeed, otherwise I wouldn’t have been so terrified. Once the Marquis sets his mind, I don’t know who can restrain him. Madam knows his temperament."
"I know of this matter and will speak to Dalang. Perhaps he only said it casually. Don’t take it to heart. Look at yourself, rushing here with such a large belly, letting the servants see. Even if the sky falls, there will be someone taller to hold it up. Just stay calm; as long as you’re steady, the mansion will remain so." Mrs. Gu Sr., feeling troubled, dismissed her to rest.
Mrs. Dong refused to leave, "Perhaps it’s better to call the Marquis here."
"Why did Dalang say this to you?" Mrs. Gu Sr. questioned instead of replying.
Mrs. Dong hesitated. Seeing her demeanor, Mrs. Gu Sr. realized she must have upset Dalang. Otherwise, Dalang wouldn’t have spoken such words, and now Mrs. Dong had caused everyone to watch.
Thinking of this, Mrs. Gu Sr. couldn’t help but feel anger, her expression turning darker, "Alright, I’m aware of this matter. You should return."
She didn’t want to say much more.
Mrs. Dong didn’t expect Mrs. Gu Sr. to change her attitude so quickly but knew she was in the wrong. She silently got up and left.
Mrs. Gu Sr. felt chest pains from anger. Seeing Nanny Chi enter, she pointed to the doorway, "Look at them. They lose themselves and act like common market women."
Nanny Chi could only console her, eventually calming Mrs. Gu Sr. Meanwhile, Nanny Chang sent word to the East Mansion. Gu Yifeng, just gone, heard this and returned to the Marquis Mansion.
When he arrived, Mrs. Gu Sr. knew the servants had informed him, deciding not to say otherwise.
After dismissing all the servants in the room, she solemnly asked, "Is what Mrs. Dong said true?"
Gu Yifeng understood what it was about, smiling, "She was merely speaking nonsense; does Mother believe such words?"
"I don’t believe her; I know your nature. You wouldn’t say such things lightly." Mrs. Gu Sr. expressed disbelief, "Dalang, I’ll take Mrs. Dong’s words as nonsense. Do you remember?"
Gu Yifeng nodded, and Mrs. Gu Sr. wisely didn’t press further, knowing his temperament. Speaking more might annoy him, making things harder to manage. This way, her son wouldn’t exacerbate matters.
After he left, Mrs. Gu Sr.’s frown deepened, fearing the truth.
Attendants knew she was troubled but didn’t know how to console her, being unaware of the situation’s details and knowing it involved the Marquis.
Lin Youning, having slept, was unaware of the matter. Gu Yifeng returned home and kept it from her, leaving Lin Youning oblivious.
As for why Mrs. Dong sought her elder brother, Lin Youning hadn’t asked, only instructed to serve the meal. Before she could eat much, Li Si rushed in, flustered.
"Marquis, Madam is in labor."
After leaving Shi’an Garden, Mrs. Dong slipped in the passage, triggering labor earlier than expected.
Lin Youning set down her chopsticks, "Brother, you should go quickly."
Given the urgency, Li Si wouldn’t otherwise act so.
Gu Yifeng stood and nodded, departing with Li Si. Yangtao approached and whispered, "There’s talk of much blood, frightening the maidservants there."
Lin Youning asked worriedly, "Is she alright?"
"That’s uncertain. They’ve sent for the Imperial Physician," Yangtao cautiously shared her distaste, choosing not to express it.
Lin Youning lost her appetite, "Clear the table. Inform me immediately of any updates from the Marquis Mansion."
Hailan agreed, while Shanmoi organized the cleanup.
Lin Youning exited the courtyard and stood there. The outside sky was pitch black, lanterns hung around the courtyard. Lin Youning wondered if she was mistaken, feeling she could hear Mrs. Dong’s cries.
Yet she understood it was an illusion. Only deep into the night, without news from the Marquis Mansion, did Lin Youning realize her legs were numb; unbeknownst to her, she had stood there for so long.
