Chapter 56: Can’t Sleep

Tara’s POV

It was on my mind all night that I couldn’t sleep. Everyone had gone to bed or at least, they were planning to now where I just kept turning and tossing.

"So he’s been married before, so what? I’ve been married before as well and he doesn’t seem to have a problem with that." I got up from the bed, "I mean, he has met that moron Derek and he’s still talking freely with me, isn’t he?" So why was I still jealous after meeting that proud girl? Ana or what was her name again?

"Damn it!" That was it. I had to see Arlo and just confirm what that was. I mean, what if he still has feelings for me as he used to say? This was his time to talk better and reassure me. I didn’t care about the lady, I mean, she was pretty but so was I.

Before I knew it, I was already knocking on Arlo’s room door. He opened up almost as soon as I had started banging the door.

Thick brows arched up as he opened the door, glaring at me like I was in a wrong dimension...maybe which I was.

"You’re not asleep yet?"

"Well good for you, love. Else, you’d still be knocking by now. My medications can be really strong you know. I should take should go take it now actually." He was still waiting by the entrance.

"Arlo, should I not come in?"

He blinked, "What? No, of course not. Come on in." This was when he opened the door wider so I could come in.

I walked straight to sit on the bed. How would I even begin? I came here for some other reason and now, he was getting me all worked up again?

I tapped lightly to the bed so he would join me. "Arlo, you told me you’ve taken your medications. Why’d you lie?"

A mask of terror replaced his jovial expression. "I said so? Then I wasn’t lying. What makes you say that, love?"

"Arlo Hernandez. Stop it."

"Damn, now I know why they call you a warrioress."

"Who calls me that?"

"No one. I was just trying to make you uncomfortable real fast, is it working?" His dimples crinkled as he gave a brief smile before it disappeared from the stern on my face. "Fine." He breathed, "I didn’t take it. All they do is make me sleep, then walked up right in the middle of the night. And the horror nightmares continues. It’s so crazy... I mean, it’s always the same thing. What’s important is that I’m better now. Right?"

The more I waited, keeping silent, the more he ended up explaining more than he probably intended to. Now though, he wasn’t saying anything again.

"Arlo, I just think that--"

"--I’m a psycho? A mentally deranged man. Tara, you of all people should know that pains like this don’t just heal overnight after 8 hours of sleep. It takes time. You should know this because I know it hasn’t been easy raising Richard all by yourself when all your life you thought you’d be with Derek. Since you’re husband and wife, right?"

I knew he was right, deep down. Heaving in a deep sigh, I went on to console him as best as I could.

"Fine. So you’re here now because you can’t sleep? I mean, it’s past 10, and tomorrow’s a big day." I blinked back regrets as soon as those words slipped through my lips. Big day for me, Richard, maybe Derek.

"It’s fine. I’ll sleep. Wait, is that why you came here?"

Damn it. I couldn’t tell him I’m here because I was jealous he was with that Ana woman!

"Do you want me to stay over?"

It sounded foreign to even my ears. What?

Arlo coughed, or he tried to hide it? He must have been startled as well.

"Well, maybe if you have a companion, it might not feel too lonely or um, maybe scary? I dunno."

"Oh okay. I mean, yes. That would be nice." He managed to say... Now I didn’t know if he had meant that or not.

"Great."

After a while, he got up from the bed. "Where are you going?" frёewebηovel.cѳm

"Nowhere. You stay here and be comfortable, alright? I see you have some thick blankets here, I’ll just spread it on the floor. But don’t worry, I’ll be beside you all night so you don’t get scared."

This brought a smile to my face. The devil in me that kept daring me pushed me even further as I asked." Do you wanna sleep on the same bed? I mean... "

This time, Arlo tripped on some invisible force and struggled to hold his balance. I reached out to help but he seemed firm on his feet already.

"You know, you and I, we’re both adults. So why does that have to be an issue?" I suddenly wished my cheeks wouldn’t stop burning. It probably wasn’t so obvious. There, that’ll make him have eyes for only me and not some Ana woman.

"Sure. You’ve said it all." Arlo said, making his way back to me. "Though, you do know that at this rate, neither of us might be getting any sleep now."

We both bursted out in laughter. I made the bed, even though it was already neat and well laid, and got to the other side, hiding under the blanket. Seeing I meant business, Arlo took it as his cue to join me too. Now he was right, neither of us might be getting any sleep because the thought of a man right next to me, and not just any man but Arlo...! That made the butterflies in my stomach fluttered, and I wasn’t just trying to be dramatic.

My like felt dried and I had the idea to lick it to add more moisture to it, then quickly stopped. What if he thought I was trying to act seductive? Suddenly, I felt hot. The weather must not have been cold to begin with. Maybe that was why and not because I was in bed with a man.

He wasn’t even so close to me so why was I still this nervous? Damn you, Tara! At this rate, you’ll become a virgin all over again.

"What did you say?"

My heart skipped. "Huh? Say? No. I didn’t... Nothing. It wasn’t me." I blinked back my regret, why was I being so anxious like this? To change the mood, yes, I would ask him about Ana now. Then we’ll sleep peacefully after his explanation.

As I opened my mouth to talk, Arlo cut me off with a very interesting question. One I had not been expecting at all.
