Chapter 55: At The Bar

Derek’s POV

"So she’s not coming?" Asked Rajeesh, one of my colleague at work and something close to a friend as well.

"Nope. I was so happy that smart beautiful lady Tara has extended the invitation over to our firm as well. But sadly--"

"--beautiful, smart? Isn’t that a little too much?" My grumpy ass said. "Besides, she didn’t have the final say. That Hernandez woman had the final say." I said out of annoyance with the way they were praising Tara, that proud woman.

Tim frowned, then continued. "Well sure, whatever you say. But by point was that I didn’t dare tell my wife to come with me! She was saying something about bringing our son, so everyone can know I’m a married man with a child? No way!"

"So what are you going to do? Come alone? Everyone will be coming with a special someone. That’s the theme of the party anyway." Rajeesh said.

This brought a smile to Tim’s face. "I will be coming with my girlfriend tomorrow! I met her last month, and we’ve been cool since then. She’s really hot, and--"

"--that is disgusting. Tell him, Derek." Rajeesh said. I was beginning to ask myself what I was doing here. Just because I went for a drink at the bar does not mean I get to hang out with two of my work people?

"I mean you must love your wife so much, the mother of your beautiful Nina." Rajeesh pressed further. "Will you be coming to the party with another woman as well?"

"Of course not." I replied, a little more louder than I’d anticipated. That’s it, if Tara would reject me like that, then maybe it was time to focus my love to Melissa. She had always been there for me anyway, and I forgive her for her past mistakes.

"I’m going with my dearest wife, Melissa. She has been preparing for the perfect outfit for all of us already."

"Really? So you’re bringing Nina too." Rajeesh commended.

"Well good for you, boss. But you know, most women are unfaithful and big time liars. My wife is nice and all, but you can’t really trust women."

"Because you’re cheating on her so you judge her the same way you’re judging yourself? Dude, get a hold of yourself here." Rajeesh said.

"My own wife is faithful. I mean, Melissa and I have had some issues in the past before, but that’s it. There’s transparency between us." I had to brag there because Melissa has always been faithful and caring towards me. I don’t regret leaving Tara for her. This wife actually respects and fears me, unlike Tara...

"Well just watch your back, boss. Women are not to be trusted." Tim insisted. "What, Rajeesh? You’re not even married yet. What would you know?"

"I have a girlfriend and that’s enough."

"Wait until you get married to her. Then you’ll understand what I’m trying to say."

I turned a deaf ear to what they were saying and continued with my drink. Maybe most women weren’t faithful, but Melissa is.

After staying a while, I decided to head home and meet Melissa. She must have been preparing for my outfit as well as hers and Nina. Besides, it was time to go home and spend time with my wife.

On my way out, I was met with Desdra at the entrance.

"Hey brother! What’s up??" She screamed out.

"What? What are you doing here, Desdra? Did you follow me here?" Taking a closer look at her, I could see she was mildly drunk... Maybe even so drunk! With her drawled words to her staggering pose.

She burst out in laughter. "I’ve been here since. Just decided to come meet you seeing that you’re about to leave."

"How much have you had to drink? And, I’ve been here a while now and I didn’t notice when you slipped in. When did you have the time to drink all of--"

"I want money. Lots of it. It’s so urgent that I’m afraid I could kill myself if I don’t get it soon."

I held her firm, wondering what to do with her. "I thought you would still be at home with Melissa and Nina."

She laughed out again. "Oh that bratty fool. That cheat and liar. That--"

"--that’s enough. Here, have a seat. I’ll go fetch you a bottle of cold water." I helped her till she balanced well on a chair by the corners. She held my hand and shook her head as I tried to leave. "Fine." I heaved out.

"I’m serious. If you won’t answer me, I have a backup plan."

I sat back on my chair. "Hmm, back up plan?"

"Yes.! I’m willing to get on my knees and plead with Tara just so she can help me. She’s richer now, and I have nothing. Do you really think I can afford to be proud now?"

My anger was starting to come back again at the mention of that arrogant woman’s name." You wouldn’t do something as foolish as that. Do you want to bring shame and humiliation to us? Beg Tara??"

"What? Why can’t I get close to her when all you’re probably thinking about is how to divorce Melissa and be with Tara again??" She said back at me like she had just launched an attack.

I couldn’t deny that I hadn’t been startled. "Well, you’re drunk. That’s all I have to say to you. I love Melissa and I’ve been faithful to her so I dunno what you’re saying right now."

She replied back instantly, "relax. I won’t tell Melissa all of this. I mean, maybe some of it since she already knows the truth no matter how she tries to deny it. Like for example, your son. Tara’s child. She never had any husband after you guys divorce."

"Again, nonsense. That’s all you’re saying right now, and I don’t even blame you." I warned, hoping my tone had been one of those she normally called ’scary’. It needed to be, so she would never bring this up again. "And don’t ever talk about Melissa in this manner again."

"She’s a slut who won’t respect me at all--"

"--yea just like you said Tara was, huh? Remember that I didn’t just divorce Tara, you sent her away with your lies and torture, you and mother. I knew Tara was always humiliated by you two," I didn’t mean to start defending Tara now, "so now you’re bored of Melissa and want me to divorce her too? It won’t happen, do you understand me?"
