The Smiling Death-Chapter 345: What just happened?
Amon walked cautiously while checking his surroundings, his grip tight on his sword.
Beside him was Scarlett. Her eyes were sharp, focused on the tower.
Soon they were near it. The closer they got, the colder the air felt, as if the temperature was dropping with every step.
With a slight frown, Amon glanced at the structure and said, "I have never seen something like this before here. What is this?"
Scarlett kept her gaze fixed ahead, her expression serious. "I don’t know either... but whatever this might be... it’s not simple."
She gave a small nod.
They walked closer to the tower. The tower was made up of black stones. Amon extended his hand, his palm touching its cold surface.
With unease in her eyes, Scarlett muttered, "This looks too old. And something about it feels odd... something very wrong." Then her eyes narrowed, as if she noticed something. Getting closer to the wall, she ran her hand over it.
Her eyes widened.
Noticing her reaction, Amon asked curiously, "What happened?"
"There are... there are runes inscribed on it..." She looked at the wall, then high above where the tower rose into the sky. "There are small runes inscribed on it which are not visible. They are all over this wall... or rather, all over the tower."
Amon was shocked, but he didn’t say anything.
"Let’s check the other side," Scarlett said calmly.
Both of them soon started to walk around it. The base of the tower was huge.
Soon they saw a tall, massive metal door.
With curiosity in his eyes, Amon said, "It’s the entrance."
Scarlett studied it carefully. "Hm... it is." She placed both her palms on it and started to push hard.
Scarlett pressed both her palms firmly against the tall metal door.
At first, she simply pushed.
The metal did not move. Not even a sound came from it.
Her brows furrowed slightly. She adjusted her stance, planting her feet more firmly into the ground. The earth beneath her boots cracked faintly as she exerted more force.
Her muscles tensed. Veins faintly appeared along her forearms as she increased her strength.
Still, the door did not move an inch. It did not tremble. It did not creak at all. It did not even acknowledge her effort.
Amon watched carefully from behind, his sword still in hand. He knew Scarlett was physically strong. Far stronger than most people in the village. Yet this door remained completely still.
Scarlett slowly lowered her hands. Her expression turned serious.
With determination in her eyes, she said quietly, "...Step back." She was hell-bent on opening it.
Amon did not argue. He immediately retreated several steps, keeping his eyes fixed on her.
Scarlett also stepped back, creating distance between herself and the door.
The air changed.
Mana in the surroundings began to tremble violently, like invisible ripples spreading through space. The wind grew unstable, swirling around her.
Then a single drop of blood formed in front of Scarlett. It floated upward slowly, rising above her head.
The drop trembled, pulsing faintly with power.
Amon’s eyes widened slightly. Even from where he stood, he could feel the density of mana gathering around it.
The blood drop suddenly exploded outward. It was not violent. It simply expanded.
It stretched and elongated in midair, taking shape.
Crimson energy hardened and condensed.
Within seconds, a massive blood-colored spear formed above Scarlett.
It was enormous, far larger than any normal weapon. The shaft looked dense and heavy, carved from solidified blood energy. Dark red patterns pulsed faintly along its surface.
A suffocating pressure filled the air. Even Amon felt a chill run down his spine. The spear radiated dread.
Scarlett’s gaze sharpened. Without hesitation, she thrust her hand forward.
The blood spear shot toward the door like a streak of crimson lightning. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
BOOOOM!!
The impact was deafening.
A violent explosion erupted upon contact. The ground trembled as shockwaves rippled outward. Dust and debris blasted into the air, covering everything in a thick cloud.
The trees nearby shook violently.
Amon shielded his face with his arm as the dust storm rushed past him.
For a moment, everything went silent. Dust slowly settled. Both of them stared at the door.
It stood there. It stood without any change. Not even a scratch marked its surface.
The massive spear had vanished as if it had never existed.
Scarlett’s eyes narrowed slightly in disbelief.
Amon lowered his arm, stunned. "...It didn’t even—"
Before he could finish, the ground shook violently.
This time, it wasn’t from Scarlett’s attack.
It came from the tower itself. A deep, resonating sound echoed from within the structure, like something ancient shifting.
Again, everything went silent.
It was too silent.
And in the next instant, a sound like an explosion came.
BOOOOOOM!!!
A powerful shockwave burst outward from the tower with a thunderous roar. It wasn’t an explosion. It was a release of something.
An overwhelming wave of force tore through the forest.
Scarlett reacted instantly, crossing her arms in front of her body to guard herself.
But the shockwave was too powerful.
Amon was standing behind her. The force struck Scarlett first, and she slammed backward into Amon. The impact knocked the breath out of him.
With pain flashing across his face, Amon cursed, "Fuck—!"
Before either could stabilize themselves, the shockwave lifted them off the ground entirely.
They were sent flying through the air at terrifying speed.
Trees shattered upon impact. Branches snapped like twigs. Their bodies tore through multiple trunks before finally crashing down far away from the tower.
THUD!!
They hit the ground hard.
Amon felt a sharp burst of pain explode across his back.
"Gahhh—!" he yelled out involuntarily.
His sword slipped from his hand as he crashed into the earth.
Dust rose around them. For a moment, everything felt dizzy.
Amon lay flat on the ground, groaning in pain, his entire body aching.
Scarlett lay on top of him. Her body had reacted and tried to stop the impact, but the shock had still been immense.
The forest around them was damaged. Broken trees were scattered everywhere from the shockwave’s path.
The tower, far in the distance, that stood unmoved, had disappeared.
Caw.
Caw.
Caw.
Many crows flew from the trees. A few of them had died from the shockwave.
