The Son-In-Law Of A Prestigious Household Wants A Divorce-Chapter 22: Silvernas Reconnaissance Team (2)
Chapter 22: Silverna's Reconnaissance Team (2)
“My lady!”
Anna called out Siverna urgently, rushing towards her.
But the latter just corrected her posture and gritted her teeth.
“I’m fine!”
After tanking the yeti’s throw, there was no way that she’d be perfectly alright. Nevertheless, she shook off her hand, as if dusting it, before gripping her spear with both hands.
“Sniff... Sniff...”
In front of her, the yeti was playing around with a human’s skull, as if it was a ball.
Meanwhile...
“Kyaaaah! Aaaah! S-Save meee!”
At the back, Sharen was being consumed by the black liquid pouring out of Pollu’s body.
“Sharen!”
In the surprisingly dire situation, Isaac moved the quickest.
“Stay still!”
“I-I-Isaac! Isaac! Isaaaaac!”
Seeing him approaching, Sharen immediately grabbed onto him. The black liquid writhing on her chest started to spread out even more.
He then tried his best to calm Sharen down, who was panicking, begging to be saved, but...
“Save me! Save me!”
“Ugh! O-Okay, j-just calm down first! Also, let go of my hand!”
Even though she was a 17-year-old girl she was still a Helmont’s direct line. Her grip’s strength was something that Isaac still couldn’t endure yet.
He tried to shake her off, but she was already in tears, seemingly unable to come to her senses.
“I said, calm down!”
Crack!
At the end of his wits, Isaac swung his hand wide, planting his fist in her face.
She wouldn’t feel pain from that, or get injured, so who cares.
“I-Isaac?”
Finding it hard to believe that he had hit her, she momentarily loosened her grip.
“Stay still!”
In that brief moment when Sharen relaxed her grip, Isaac grabbed the back of his falchion’s blade and brought it to Sharen’s nape.
Riiip!
Then, he tore her clothes in a straight line, revealing her pale skin.
He threw the torn clothes away. The black liquid attached to the clothes started to writhe, then consumed the rest of the clothes.
“It’s gone! Sharen! It’s gone!”
“H-Heuuk?!”
Sharen urgently felt her body with both hands. After confirming that the black liquid was all gone, she choked up and hugged Isaac tightly.
“Uwaaaaaang! Isaaaaaaac!”
“Come to your senses already! Also, let me go! It hurts!”
This clearly wasn’t the time for this, but also, if this kept up, considering her natural strength as a Helmont, Isaac would be the one who’d get injured next.
While Isaac was occupied with that, Meladik Drakemoor stared at Pollu Blackthorn, whose body had fallen to the ground, twitching.
“Pollu?”
Black liquid continued to pour from his mouth and wound.
Watching it gradually start to cover the rest of Pollu’s body, Meladik was at a loss of what to do.
“Don’t get close!”
Isaac hurriedly warned Meladik while still trying to pry off Sharen, who was still clinging to him.
Then, he turned his gaze to check on Silverna’s side, and found out that a battle had already begun there.
Clang!
“...”
Silverna swung her spear silently, deflecting the yeti’s bone club.
In that series of rapidly developing exchanges, Silverna—with her mouth tightly shut—looked as cool as a veteran warrior, but...
Oh no.
Isaac knew that the situation was the complete opposite of what it looked like.
She might look calm, but she was actually letting her emotion control her actions more than anyone else here.
Just a moment ago, she had judged that now was the time to retreat.
But as soon as she clashed with the yeti, she swung her spear so wildly as if she was trying to break it, trying to kill the yeti with all her might.
“Anna! Drag Silverna out of there, and take Sharen’s greatsword!”
“Y-Yes, understood! My lady! Come to your senses!”
In the end, Isaac had to carry Sharen, who was still trembling in fear, on his back.
Regrettably, none of them had any leniency to take care of Pollu in the middle of all this.
“Meladik, leave Pollu for now and escape-!”
“I-I-Isaac?!”

Meladik’s voice was tinged with bewilderment.
When Isaac turned his head, he saw Pollu, buried in black liquid, slowly rising as if lifted by it.
“Leave him! Just run!”
Isaac started running, and the others followed him behind.
Silverna bit her lip until it bled and turned her back on the yeti.
Meladik shouted an apology to Pollu, before starting to run, taking the lead.
“Humaaaan!”
The yeti tried to follow them, but unlike them, it didn’t ignore Pollu. To the yeti, he was another human, just like the others, so it swung its massive bone club sideways as if to sweep him away, but...
The black liquid blocked its swing, and a battle between it and the Yeti began.
The two threats turned towards each other.
With that, Silverna’s Reconnaissance Team was able to escape.
* * *Slap!
Near a frozen river.
A mountain hare was startled by the sharp noise that cut through the thickly piled snow, and ran away.
Silverna’s head was forcefully turned to the side as she was slapped. She looked at the man who had hit her.
“That was the worst.”
Isaac’s words pierced Silverna’s heart like an awl.
Silverna felt a surge of emotion for a moment, but she couldn’t say anything.
She was the one in charge.
So, she had to admit that everything about that just now was the worst.
“...I’m sorry.”
“Sir Isaac! My lady did her best!”
Anna hurriedly tried to defend Silverna, but Isaac’s sharp gaze didn’t soften.
“I clearly told you that we shouldn’t fight the yeti there, and you agreed. But, the moment I took my eyes off you, you got distracted by the yeti, and couldn’t even figure out what was happening with Pollu and Meladik!”
“T-That’s...”
“What if the fight had dragged on there? You know it’s not a simple yeti, but a Named! What do you think would happen if the Demonic Beasts swarmed us from the mountain back then?! We’d all be annihilated right there and then!”
“Anna. Isaac is right.”
She had indeed failed to fulfill her role as a leader.
The moment she became certain that the yeti had caused the death of her comrades, she was so overwhelmed by her emotion that wouldn’t let the yeti go unpunished.
“Due to my feelings for my dead comrades, I momentarily forgot about the living comrades by my side.”
“...”
“I’m sorry. I have no excuse.”
Silverna bowed her head.
As a quiet atmosphere enveloped them...
Sharen, wrapped in a cloak, trembled as she tugged at Isaac’s clothes.
“I-I-Isaac. I-I’m...so...c-cold.”
“...”
Sharen had nearly died.
If she had been engulfed by that black liquid, even Isaac couldn’t be sure that he could save her.
Fortunately, she was wearing leather, since it was part of the reconnaissance team’s attire.
If it had been armor instead...
It would have taken ages to take off, and Sharen would have been consumed by the black liquid as she was.
Isaac hugged Sharen to make her a little warmer.
As her trembling somewhat subsided, she burrowed deeper into Isaac’s embrace and sniffled.
Well, she’s still only 17...
She had acted tough and pretended to be fine earlier, but she was still too young to face death directly like that.
The moment she realized that she could really die, she was scared out of her wits.
Moreover, the situation she was in was one where the sword she had trained with all her life was of no use.
That helpless feeling probably amplified her fear.
“I-I also made a mistake... I-I should have run towards the wall when escaping, b-but without realizing it, I...”
At that moment, Meladik apologized awkwardly.
Somehow, the situation turned into a competition where everyone was admitting their own mistakes.
It was Meladik, who, in confusion, led them here as he was in the lead and didn’t know where he was going.
If they hadn’t found the river, they might still be running even now.
“It’s okay. We can consider this as us taking a detour. The wall isn’t that further away.”
Anna looked at the map, letting out a reassuring smile, telling them not to worry.
“Um, we can’t make a campfire here, right?”
“That would be difficult. Besides, strictly speaking, this is still the demonic beasts’ territory.”
Anna shook her head at Meladik’s subsequent suggestion.
In other words, they’d need to conserve their energy to return to the wall without the warmth of a fire.
Of course, that wasn’t an easy task.
Sharen pursed her lips, trying to endure somehow, but the sound of her teeth chattering could be heard by everyone.
It was clear that she was struggling with the cold.
Isaac unbuttoned his shirt and hugged her again.
“It’ll be a bit warmer if our skins touched.”
“I-Isaac...”
“This is for our survival. You’re our second strongest here, after Silverna. You need to conserve your strength.”
At those words, Sharen’s eyes welled up with tears, but as if trying to hide that, she buried her face again.
“Okay, I understand.”
Everyone’s breath dispersed in the air as white vapor.
Sharen asked in a small voice, almost whispering.
“But Isaac... How are you so calm?”
At her question, the others’ turned their gazes at him.
He was supposed to be the man with the least combat experience among them, and yet he was acting the most calmly out of them all.
If Isaac had made slower judgments, there was a high possibility that two or three of them wouldn’t be here.
“Because I’ve dealt with too many near-death experiences.”
He muttered with a bitter smile.
Before his regression, although he couldn’t fight due to his crippled leg...
That didn’t mean he wasn’t on the battlefield.
When fending against the Transcendent’s Race’s attacks, every human had to fight for their lives.
Thankfully, it went well.
At first, he had worried that his judgment might be clouded when holding a sword.
But it turned out to be an unfounded concern, as revealed in the recent situation. That was one less of his worries.
“Achoo!”
Everyone’s gaze turned to Silverna.
She looked dumbfounded, seemingly surprised herself.
“Are you feeling cold too, my lady?”
“No, I’m—“
Before she could finish her answer, her lips froze.
She recalled what Isaac had said earlier about judgment and such.
“Yes, I am cold.”
Realizing that her condition, as the strongest force here, was directly linked to their survival, she nodded.
Then Silverna strode over and embraced both Isaac and Sharen.
“I’ll impose on you a bit.”
Hearing her willingness to stay together to maintain their bodies’ heat, Isaac smiled lightly.
“Go ahead.”
She made the best judgment she could at the moment, without thinking about saving face.
I just taught her a single thing, and look at her now.
Indeed, the perfect case of act speaks louder than words.
“You guys too, come here. We need to preserve our body heat.”
At Silverna’s order, Anna quickly ran over and joined the embrace.
Meanwhile, Meladik approached them awkwardly and somewhat clumsily extended his arms to hug Isaac’s back.
They huddled together to overcome the cold and fully preserve their strength.
But warmth wasn’t the only thing that they felt. There was also a surge of emotions, enveloping them together tightly.
However, it didn’t last long.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
The ground shook, the sound of footsteps echoed.
“Skreee...! Skreee...!”
Then, the yeti’s voice, different from before, echoed.
Because their deodorizer’s smell hadn’t completely faded away yet, it seemed to have followed them all the way here.
Silverna was about to make her move, but Isaac stopped her.
“Can I trust your judgment this time, Silverna?”
At Isaac’s question, which felt like a test, Silverna nodded without hesitation.
“Trust me.”
Even as the thumping noise approached, Silverna calmly examined Anna’s map.
Then...
“We’ll intercept it.”
She declared, gripping her spear tightly.
“Escaping is impossible. We can’t shake off a Named Yeti with our current stamina.”
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Even though they had warmed up a little, their bodies were still stiff from the cold.
“So, we’ll kill it before it can call other Demonic Beasts. We need to end this quickly.”
“Are you confident?”
Silverna had already faced the yeti once.
If it were an ordinary yeti, there was no way she’d lose.
But this one was a Named.
An intelligent Demonic Beast.
Generally speaking, such a Demonic Beast was several times stronger than any ordinary ones, but...
“I’ll make up for it.”
Silverna declared firmly.
While gripping her spear tightly.
For Isaac, that was enough.
As the others prepared themselves to face the approaching yeti.
Sharen, who had been in Isaac’s embrace, slowly separated herself and took a deep breath.
“...”
Isaac threw her an intense stare.
Can she even fight?
He doubted her a little, but...
“I’ll definitely... Save you.”
Sharen muttered, gripping her greatsword as if she had made up her mind.
“That way, I can sort out these feelings. And have a chance to say what I want to say.”
People said that sometimes, children grow up a little too quickly.
Isaac felt like he had witnessed that moment.
In the face of a life-threatening crisis, Sharen seemed to have felt and realized something that would change her life values.
“We must avenge Pollu!”
“Yes! We must!”
Meladik and Anna, too, prepared themselves for the upcoming clash.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Then, from the direction where the yeti’s footsteps echoed...
“Keuheehahahahahahahaha!”
Pollu’s maniacal laughter was heard.
