Chapter 159: Chapter 159 Emily Lopez Does Tricks in G Region
Melody Yoody’s face looked very displeased as she walked straight toward James Brown, and Alice Brown also picked up on Melody’s unfriendly gaze. Her heart skipped a beat—could this woman be James’s girlfriend? If so, she herself had made a huge blunder, and her face turned pale in an instant.
"Mr. Smith, is she...?" Alice Brown stammered, unsure of what to say next.
"It’s alright, don’t mention my identity," James Brown said coolly, as he faced Melody and greeted her, "Melody, what a coincidence."
Melody Yoody stopped in front of James Brown and said with a stern face, "Yes, quite the coincidence indeed. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known about your impressive charm—so enchanting that even the hostess gives you a kiss."
James Brown chuckled, "We’re good friends and have known each other for a long time. Alice wasn’t a hostess back then, so we’re a bit closer than others. You don’t think there’s something between us, do you?"
Alice Brown quickly smiled at Melody Yoody and said, "I’m sorry, Grace Lopez and I have always been like this with each other. You must be Grace’s girlfriend—pleased to meet you."
Facing Alice’s gaze, Melody Yoody, despite sensing some insincerity, didn’t feel any hostility from her. As a leader, her Vision Level was sharp—she read a lot from Alice’s eyes.
This Alice Brown must be very close to James Brown, but their relationship wasn’t that of lovers; otherwise, she would’ve been hostile toward her. Extending her hand, she shook hands with Alice and said, "I’m also delighted to meet you. I’ve been separated from James for many years and am out of touch with many things. I didn’t know he had a friend like you."
Being a renowned hostess herself, Alice Brown was quick to adapt and lightly chuckled, "Right, I’ve been wondering why Big Watkins here has been refusing to get a girlfriend for so many years. Turns out, he’s been waiting for a beauty like Melody. He certainly waited for something worthwhile."
Pleased with the compliment, Melody’s expression softened as she glanced at James Brown and said, "Looks like this guy still has some conscience left."
"Hehe, then I won’t disturb you two. We’ll catch up sometime when we’re free," Alice Brown winked playfully at James Brown, then strutted towards the TV station’s office building in her high heels, swaying her hips.
Melody Yoody pinched James Brown’s arm, speaking in an unfriendly tone, "You bastard, it seems you’ve had quite the romantic luck these past years."
James Brown smiled faintly, "You’re not going to harp on these past years’ affairs, are you?"
"Ah ha, I knew it! You’ve been up to no good these years, haven’t you? I’ve got things to take care of today, but you’d better come clean to me later. If not, you and I won’t be done."
"Okay, do you have time for lunch then? Let’s grab a meal together," James Brown extended the invitation.
"Lunch, huh... Sure, but it will have to be around half past twelve. Wait for me."
It wasn’t until Melody Yoody entered the TV station that James Brown went to start his Porsche. For some reason, he didn’t want Melody to see his success, as if he didn’t want these things to affect their relationship. He also feared that he’d changed too much and couldn’t find the same joy they used to have together.
After leaving the TV station, James Brown went to the job market and reserved a booth—there was a job fair on Sunday, and he was urgently in need of staff, so he was attacking on all fronts.
Back at the company before half-past ten, James Brown had just sat down and lit a cigarette when the door was pushed open. Gina Lopez walked in, closed the door behind her, and strode towards him.
"Mr. Lopez, what’s the matter?" sensing Gina Lopez’s poor mood, James Brown was somewhat puzzled.
Gina Lopez slammed her hand on the table and bellowed, "James Brown, you bastard, what’s been the matter with you these days?"
James Brown was baffled, "What’s the matter with me? I’ve been working diligently, haven’t I?"
"Diligent work? And what exactly are you up to now?"
"I just went to the TV station and the job market, I’ve only just returned," replied James Brown, taken aback by Gina Lopez’s sudden anger after his rare serious work effort.
"Is that so? Or did you go out to pick up girls instead?" Gina Lopez’s eyes swept across James Brown’s face.
"Pick up girls?" James Brown looked back at Gina Lopez, a mix of amusement and disbelief in his voice: "Emily, why are you causing trouble here?"
"Ah? How did you recognize me?"
With that response, it was clear this was Emily Lopez. A bit frustrated, Emily didn’t understand how James Brown had recognized her.
"Hehe, it’s quite simple. You act just like your sister when you’re angry, but picking up girls? Your sister would never say something like that."
"Oh, I see. I’ll have to correct that in the future and try to make sure you can’t recognize me."
James Brown smiled and invited Emily Lopez to sit on the couch, saying, "You’re going to impersonate your sister and fool me again in the future?"
"Of course, I never tire of this matter."
"Now I don’t have to pretend to be your brother-in-law anymore, so why are you still lying to me?"
Grace Lopez slumped back into the sofa and said, "Actually, I really wish you could be my brother-in-law. These past few days, without you at my sister’s house, it’s been so boring for me. I deeply regret exposing you guys now. If I hadn’t, you would have had to keep playing my brother-in-law, and I could drag you out to play every day. But now that’s not possible."
James Brown laughed and said, "I really have to thank you. Otherwise, how could I be free? However, even if we can’t be brother-in-law and sister-in-law, couldn’t we still be friends?"
"I like the sound of that! Brother-in-law, how about we go out for lunch together at noon?"
"I can’t do noon, I’ve got plans."
"Plans with who, a man or a woman?" Grace Lopez immediately narrowed her eyes.
"A woman, my girlfriend."
"Your girlfriend?" Grace Lopez exclaimed in disbelief, speaking as rapidly as popping beans, "Impossible! You were still staying at my sister’s place the day before yesterday. If you had a girlfriend, how could she possibly agree to that?"
James Brown smiled and said, "She was my high school classmate. We met again at a class reunion and rekindled our old flame." freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"Psh! Classmates meeting classmates, that’s never good news. Brother-in-law, you’ve been separated from that female classmate for so many years, what feelings could there be? Look at how long you’ve lived with my sister, you’re already used to cohabiting. My sister is the best choice for you."
James Brown chuckled and said, "The time I lived with your sister, what kind of cohabiting was that? I was there to make money, for work, everything had to revolve around your sister’s preferences. Real cohabiting means she adapts to me, and I adapt to her."
Grace Lopez tilted her head, pondering, "That actually makes sense. But to get someone like my sister to adapt to someone else, that really is quite difficult. She’s got such a temper."
James Brown chuckled again, and involuntarily, Melody Yoody came to mind—she was also as strong-willed as Gina Lopez. When they were together before, it was purely young people’s desire for each other, pure infatuation. But now he wasn’t sure if they could truly be compatible.
James Brown felt differently about Melody Yoody compared to other women. With her, he wondered if they could spend a lifetime together, so he had to consider many things, not just seeking happiness or declaring love. Even if the love was deep, once married, if they were incompatible, too many couples ended up separating.
Grace Lopez elbowed James Brown gently and grinned mischievously, "Brother-in-law, tell me your girlfriend doesn’t have the same foul temper as my sister?"
"Temper? She’s alright, but like your sister, she’s also a very strong-willed woman. Given my lazy nature, that really is a problem."
Grace Lopez’s eyes lit up, and she chuckled, "Then you’re doomed. There’s no way it’ll work out."
"If it doesn’t work out with her, why are you so happy? If I don’t make it with her, it’s the same no-go with your sister," James Brown retorted with an irritated glance.
Grace Lopez’s smug laughter continued, "I’m just happy, what are you going to do about it?"
James Brown laughed as he knocked on Grace Lopez’s head and said, "You little troublemaker, delighting in others’ misfortune."
Grace Lopez laughed even more heartily, not feeling the slightest bit of remorse for her behavior, when suddenly there was a knock at the door. James Brown called out "Come in," and Sarah Utah walked in.
As soon as Sarah Utah entered, she saw James Brown sitting with Grace Lopez on the sofa, and in her eyes, Grace Lopez was clearly Gina Lopez, the boss. She was startled and, with an awkward smile, said, "Mr. Lopez, Manager Johnson, I’ll come back later."
Before James Brown could respond, Grace Lopez said with a stern face, "No need, if you’ve got something to say, just say it."
Sarah Utah, feeling the hostility in Grace Lopez’s gaze, became even more nervous and stammered, "Mr. Lopez, please don’t misunderstand, Manager Johnson and I are just discussing work stuff, it’s... it’s all very normal."
James Brown knocked on Grace Lopez’s head and said, "Sarah, no need to be nervous."
Sarah Utah’s eyes widened and her mouth opened even wider, speechless for a while. James Brown was really too bold, knocking on Mr. Lopez’s head, and Mr. Lopez didn’t seem to get angry at all, even giving a giggle. In her mind, Gina Lopez was like a queen, and even if they were in a relationship, it shouldn’t be like this, especially in the office. James Brown should at least respect Gina Lopez’s status as the boss.
Seeing Sarah Utah’s reaction, James Brown felt a headache coming on and scolded Grace Lopez, "Look at the mess you’re making here, scaring people like this. If your sister finds out, she’s definitely going to scold you."
Grace Lopez giggled, "I’m just joking, who asked her to be so timid?"
Sarah Utah’s thought process collapsed. To see Gina Lopez, the boss, being pushed around by James Brown, not getting angry, but appearing so mischievous and devoid of her usual dignity—it was a revelation that love could change a person so much. Moreover, Big Brother Brown was really amazing to be able to make Gina Lopez act like this toward him.
Sarah Utah’s admiration for James Brown surged like the endless flow of a great river.
