The Thorne of Destiny-Chapter 132: A Funny Guy
In an inn in a certain part of the city, the Wraiths were busy preparing to step out. Similar to the City Lord, they were also searching for the mysterious Foundation Establishment realm cultivator that the whole city was looking for.
After being in this city for close to a year, this was the most concrete lead they had. Even though they were not sure whether it was their target. Still, it was the only target they had found to be able to pursue.
However, unlike the guards, they were able to infer some things from the recent happenings. The guards would usually find those ’traces’ later in the afternoon, meaning they had to have been placed there earlier.
However, if it had been placed too early, it would have been discovered much earlier as well. So the time between when it was placed and when it was discovered wasn’t too far from each other.
Also, the one doing this was targeting specific places. Hardly any of the traces appeared in the outer or core parts of the city. Only the inner regions of the city were targeted.
However, even if that were true, the inner city was still huge, and every single area couldn’t be monitored. They were planning to scout possible spots where more traces would be found in hopes of catching this elusive individual.
However, just before they stepped out, the manager of the inn quickly approached them. He was a short, middle-aged man. He was also a Nascent Soul realm cultivator, but he was nowhere near the level of the Wraiths.
Therefore, whenever he spoke to them, he was very respectful.
Knock Knock Knock!
The sound of knocking resounded outside the room that was often used for meetings by the Wraiths.
"Hmm?" The leader, Wraith No. 1, frowned when he heard the knock on the door. They were at a crucial point in the meeting, and he didn’t like being interrupted.
"Come in." He said in a slightly cold tone. Slowly, the door creaked open and the short inn manager entered.
"Gulp!
My apologies, sir. I didn’t mean to disturb your meeting." He said while bowing his head. As soon as he entered the room, he could feel the four pairs of eyes on him, looking at him with intense gazes.
They didn’t seem to be happy about his visit. Honestly, he also didn’t want to do this. When he first heard that the Wraiths were going to be staying in his inn, he almost had a heart attack.
The Wraiths already had a fearsome reputation as very skilled assassins. Even demonic cultivators in the same realm feared them since they rarely failed when hunting their targets.
Their individual power was great, but their teamwork made them even more deadly. Many even speculated that they could kill a Transcendent realm cultivator with their teamwork.
However, these were baseless claims, but it was enough to showcase their reputation among fellow demonic cultivators.
"Forget that. Why are you disturbing us?" Wraith No. 2 said. His slender frame, which was hidden by the cloak, slightly hunched over the table.
"A-Ahh? Yes. The formation detected someone lurking near the inn." He said with his head still bowed.
"Huh? So what? Deal with it yourself. Isn’t that what you would do if we weren’t here?" Wraith No. 4 said, his brash and abrasive attitude that wasn’t supposed to be found in an assassin was on full display.
"I would have done so, but with the way the guards have been moving the past few days, perhaps they discovered something about this place?
I didn’t want to take any chances, so I came here to inform you." The inn manager said while bowing his head once again.
The Wraiths narrowed their eyes, finding some sense in what the man had just said.
"Hehe! He is surprisingly making sense." A female voice sounded from one of the noticeably shorter, cloaked figures. This was the only female among the group, Wraith no 3.
"What is the strength of the individual?" Wraith No. 1 asked. The inn manager blinked his eyes in confusion, caught off guard by the question.
"I-I don’t know." He responded hesitantly.
Seeing this, the Wraiths furrowed their brows before no 2 asked.
"Didn’t you check his strength with your spirit sense?"
The manager’s eyes widened as he finally realised his mistake. However, before he could rectify it. Wraith No. 3 spoke again.
"I take back my compliment. He is an idiot after all." Then all five individuals activated their spirit sense. Immediately, they were able to see the entire structure of the inn.
Not only the inn, but even part of the street was included. This was them restraining their spirit sense. If they went all out, they would be able to see much more.
This was the defining skill that separated a nascent Soul realm cultivator from the Golden Core realm. It was a separating factor from the First and Second phases of cultivation.
The first three realms of cultivation were known as the First phase of cultivation. Here, a cultivator could be said to be taking baby steps, just beginning their journey of cultivation.
The next three realms were known as the second phase. Starting from the Nascent Soul realm, the cultivator undergoes a significant change in their very being.
For the Nascent Soul realm, it was the ability to use their spirit to check their surroundings. At this point, cultivators didn’t just see with their eyes; they used their spirit sense to get detailed information about what was in their surroundings.
Of course, it wasn’t something that could be done indefinitely. Spirit sense required using the power of the soul, something that varied from individual to individual.
Also, constantly checking your surroundings with your sprit sense could alert people in the surroundings, who would think that you’re trying to pry on them and take offense to it.
Anyway, all five of them soon locked onto the individual in the alley. As soon as they sensed the cultivation of the individual, all their faces changed.
The Wraiths turned to look at the inn manager, and as soon as he felt their gazes, he thought it was over for him.
"You disrupted our meeting for a stupid Golden Core realm cultivator?" Wraith No. 4 asked angrily, raising his voice. The inn manager was about to start begging for his life, but before he could,
"Hmm?" Wraith No. 1, who was still observing the Golden Core realm cultivator, let out a surprised sound. Everyone paused and turned their attention back to their leader.
Without saying anything else, the leader disappeared in a blur. Almost immediately, the remaining Wraiths followed in a blur, leaving the manager of the inn dumbfounded.
Back to the present...
Adrian was now in front of four demonic cultivators. He stood frozen with the broken formation disk still in his hand. He looked like a child caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing.
And weirdly, that was the case. Before he could say anything, Wraith No. 4 spoke first.
"Who is this bastard?" Wraith No. 4 asked.
"Heh, isn’t it obvious? This is the ’mysterious Foundation Establishment realm cultivator’ that the guards have been trying to find for the past few days." Wraith No. 2 answered him.
"We’ve also been searching for a while now without any results. Who would have thought that he would come to us by himself? It almost takes all the fun out of the chase." Wraith No. 3 said, in a pouty tone of voice.
The four individuals seemed to have completely forgotten about Adrian and were completely absorbed in their conversation, but Adrian knew better.
He could feel their gazes on him. All four of them were keeping an eye on him, wanting to see if he would make any sudden movements.
However, Adrian didn’t do anything. He just stood still, clutching the broken formation disk in his hand.
The Wraiths, seemingly done with their conversation, turned their attention back to Adrian.
"Now, mind telling us how a Foundation Establishment realm cultivator became a Golden Core realm cultivator in a few days?" Wraith No. 1 asked.
"Would you believe me if I told you I just broke through?" Adrian responded in the gruff voice of a middle-aged man.
Silence.
Even though Adrian couldn’t see their faces since they were all wearing masks, he could somehow feel they were staring at him with deadpan expressions.
"Hehe. That was funny." It was Wraith no 3 that broke the silence. Even without seeing her face, from her tone, Adrian could sense her seemingly playful nature from her tone of voice.
"Seeing how you’ve basically been toying with the whole city for the past few days, I was wondering what kind of person you were. It turns out you’re more interesting than I thought."
"I’m glad my actions were able to impress the lady. Though I must confess that I am confused as to what the lady and her companions want with me."
Adrian said while giving them a slight bow.
