Chapter 137: Killing a Wraith

Just before the serpent crashed onto Wraith No. 4, the cocoon quickly enveloped his body, protecting him from certain death.

However, almost immediately, the cocoon shattered, unable to withstand the might of the serpent. And why would it? It was just a hastily made barrier.

Even though it was made by a Nascent Soul realm cultivator, the power behind the serpent far surpassed what it could withstand. Still, it was enough to save Wraith no 4’s life.

Wraith no 4 was sent flying across the street, like a kite cut off from its string. His body crashed violently into the ground, causing him to cough up blood.

Although he was able to avoid the brunt of the attack, he was still in pretty bad shape. In fact, he was in such awful shape that he was struggling to get back to his feet.

Ideally, this would have been the perfect chance for Bella to get rid of him. One more strike from the serpent and he wouldn’t be able to survive.

However, the serpent wasn’t moving. Rather than moving to end Wraith no 4, its body began becoming more illusory than before. Its blueish-purple scales began fading out of existence.

It was as if the martial skill was being dispelled. The few people who were still in the area and were watching the fight were dumbfounded.

’What was she doing?’

’Why was she dispelling the martial skill?’

’Did she think she could win without it?’

All of them asked these questions in their minds. Most of them thought Bella was being arrogant by dispelling the martial skill instead of using it to kill Wraith no 4.

However, when they finally glanced at Bella, they immediately realised why the serpent was becoming illusory. It wasn’t Bella dispelling the martial skill. She simply couldn’t support its use anymore.

Her face was exceedingly pale, and if one looked closely, one would see her body trembling slightly. Her Qi had almost been depleted, and she looked like she would pass out at any moment.

Still, she gritted her teeth and pressed on. Just before the serpent completely faded away, she cracked her whip one more time, sending it towards Wraith no 4 once again.

The serpent lunged for him, but just as it was about to hit him, it ultimately vanished into motes of light. Bella ultimately couldn’t support its use for a third time.

As soon as the serpent vanished, she collapsed on one knee and was panting heavily. Seeing this, Wraith no 4 let out a strained laughter.

He pointed one of his daggers at her and said.

"Hahahaha! Even with such a good opportunity, you still couldn’t kill me.

What could I have expected from a Golden Core realm cultivator?

Perhaps you should -" However, before he could complete his rant,

His mind suddenly screamed in danger. However, there was nothing in front of him. he initially thought Bella attacked him through a secret method. He was about to brace himself for another assault, but upon seeing the look on her face, he realised that it wasn’t her.

In the next second, he heard footsteps behind him. The feeling of danger heightened, and he instinctively wanted to dodge. However, in his condition, he couldn’t move fast enough.

Pierce!

A long silver sword pierced him from behind. He looked down to see the gleaming silver blade now bathed in blood. His blood.

With shaky hands, he wanted to hold the sword that had pierced through him. Just as his hands were about to touch the blade, the blade was withdrawn from his body, causing a stream of blood to flow out.

Wraith no 4 stumbled forward, his whole body becoming weaker by the second. Honestly, it was a surprise that he hadn’t died yet. If it were a normal person who had his heart pierced through, he would have already kicked the bucket.

It just goes to show how tenacious the life force of a Nascent Soul realm expert was. Even as his life was slowly fading away, the mind of Wraith no 4 was perfectly clear.

Perhaps even clearer than it was normally. He already knew he was going to die. He could feel it. The only thing he wanted to do in his last few seconds was to see the person who actually killed him.

With that, he turned his head around, and his eyes widened in shock when he did. In his field of vision was a middle-aged man wearing a bamboo hat. However, what drew his gaze was not the man himself, but the sword in his hand.

The silver sword in the man’s hand was coated in blood, yet still gleamed under the sunlight.

’H-How, how could it be him?’ He thought to himself. The man in front of him was a Golden Core realm cultivator. The same one that he was about to kill just a while ago.

If it weren’t for the intervention of Bella and her guards, he would have already been dead a long time ago. And now, that same man was the one who had just ended his life. The shock seemed to great for his mind to bear.

However, that shock quickly turned to anger. Anger at the man in front of him. Anger that he dared to intervene in his fight. Anger that he dared to take his life.

If he was going to die anyway, he was going to drag this bastard down with him. His face contorted into a hideous expression, and with the dagger still in his hands, he launched a lightning-fast strike towards the middle-aged man.

Wraith No. 4’s dagger flashed forward with the last remnants of his strength, a desperate, vengeful strike aimed at the middle-aged man’s throat. His vision was already darkening, his body failing, but his hatred burned brighter than ever.

Clang!

The middle-aged man was a bit surprised by the actions of Wraith no 4. Thankfully, he hadn’t let his guard down and was able to react to the sudden attack.

He brought up his sword and blocked the strike from Wraith no 4. Well, barely. The force behind the strike was enough to send the middle-aged man flying for a few meters.

Thankfully, he wasn’t injured and was just a bit shaken. Wraith no 4, seeing his final strike blocked, was furious. However, there was nothing more he could do.

"You..." he croaked, blood dripping from his lips. His legs gave out beneath him, and he fell to his knees, the dagger clattering onto the blood-stained cobblestones beside him.

Just before the light faded from his eyes, he finally saw the face of the middle-aged man clearly. Or what was supposed to be it. Instead of a middle-aged man, the face that was now underneath the bamboo hat was that of a boy.

A very young boy. In fact, it seemed he had seen this face somewhere before. His mind wandered to the poster that depicted the drawing of the target that they came to this city to capture.

As soon as he made this realization, his eyes widened in shock. However, before he could say anything, the light in them finally faded, leaving only a lifeless body.

******

A few moments ago, when the serpent struck Wraith no 4, he was sent flying down the streets. He landed near a stall that was already destroyed from the previous wreckage.

However, unknown to him, someone was hiding inside this wreckage. And who was this person? Well, who else could it be but Adrian?

Even though Bella had told him to run away, he clearly didn’t listen to her. He quickly ran towards one of the destroyed stalls and hid in the wreckage, watching the fight unfold.

When he saw Bella’s hair and attire, he immediately recognized that she was from the House of Vyre. His body immediately tensed up, and he thought they were here to capture him as well.

His current opinion of the noble houses wasn’t the best, thanks to the House of Blake. He wanted to avoid getting involved with any of them.

However, he quickly relaxed when he saw that Bella didn’t pay any attention to him and instead immediately told him to leave. How would she recognize him?

He was still wearing the Veil of a Hundred Shadows. Bella, who was just a single realm above him, definitely couldn’t see through it. However, the same couldn’t be said for her guards.

With all of them at the Nascent Soul realm, it wouldn’t be long before they noticed something strange about him. He could even see that one of them was already wary of him.

The one that stood closest to Bella and was also radiating the most powerful aura was looking at him with a scrutinizing gaze. To avoid his identity being found out, Adrian had to quickly leave the alley.

However, that didn’t mean he was done with the Wraiths. Those dastardly demonic cultivators were about to kill him for Heaven’s sake. Even if he wasn’t strong enough to kill them, he at least wanted to see them dead.

He didn’t think he would get the opportunity to do it himself. When he saw Wraith no 4’s body flying towards his direction, a devious plan started forming in his mind.
