Chapter 96: Chapter 96

"How about some good news to make the evening?" Damon announced upon his arrival.

"I could use some good news." She let him help Angel onto his seat and waited with bated breath. In response, he nodded to Mabella.

"Why don’t we wait until after dinner? I promise it will be worth the wait." She winked, but Avery didn’t think she could wait.

"Did the two of you come up with a plan to torture me with curiosity?" She groaned, but the siblings didn’t relent. She stopped asking when she realized they had no plans of telling her what the good news was.

She was not the only one waiting for the good news. Mina and Chloé were impatient too, and so was Gabriel when he returned and heard of what they were waiting for.

He sat down to gobble up his dinner.

"What happened to the D’Abovilles?" Avery asked.

"I tossed them off the bridge." He shrugged and stuffed his mouth with a drumstick.

Everyone was speechless. He probably didn’t mean it but how could they continue asking?

At least he didn’t have the smell of blood on him so they were certain he had not killed them....yet.

When dinner was finally done, Mabella opened her bag and took out a folded piece of fabric, which she held up. Avery suspiciously unfolded it and was dumbfounded.

"A school blazer? This is so cute!" She marvelled at the tiny blue blazer. She was still in awe when she saw the pants and shirt, and she almost passed out. Since when were school uniforms so cute?

Angel tugged on her sleeve and asked for the uniform, which she gave to her. He happily placed it at his chest and looked down at himself.

"Do you want to try it on?" She suggested.

He looked up at her with pleading eyes she wouldn’t say no to. She gave the uniform to him, knowing he no longer wanted her help changing. He ran upstairs to his room and her heart melted.

"Does this mean he got accepted?" She asked Damon, who had been the one to check out Monarch Academy earlier.

"He can start going to school tomorrow if he wants to." He delivered the good news and she didn’t think her heart could take it.

"My goodness, my son is finally going to school. Can you believe it?"

It still felt like something out of a fairytale. When Angel returned in his school uniform and his favorite backpack on his back, everyone whipped out their phones to take pictures of him. He looked way too adorable to not have a hundred pictures of him taken.

Like a good model, he made several poses and let them take his pictures from different angles. When he made them follow him to his room and sat at his desk, posing with his favorite fairy tale in his hand, the women burst into laughter.

"He looks like a little CEO at work." Mina remarked with a whisper, her heart completely stolen by the bundle of cuteness. He looked way too serious for his age and as soon as they were done taking pictures, he looked at them as though asking whether they were done, restoring his cuteness.

"Why do I have a feeling he would make a good model in future?" Chloe was interested. Ever since he learned she was a model, he had taken interest in runway shows and most of his poses were from magazines they checked out together. He didn’t get many of them right but he was so cute no one would notice.

Mabella thought about it. "I was thinking more along the lines of a stylist. You should see the clothes he chooses both while shopping and picking out what to wear."

"A model needs to have style." Mina merged the two before the topic could morph into Angel’s future career when he was only five.

Avery was too busy editing the pictures and selecting what to print. In the end, she decided to have all of them printed—they were all so cute she couldn’t bear to part with any of them.

When they let Angel know how soon he could go to school, he wanted to go the next day.

It wasn’t until everyone had left and they were on her own that it sunk in. She prepared his clothes and kept his new stationery in his bag, feeling as though she was packing away a piece of her heart each time.

"It’s just going to last several hours. By the time you clock out of work, he will be waiting for us to pick him up." He reminded her, wrapping his arms around her from behind.

"It just feels so surreal and I have so many questions. Will he be able to catch up? Will he fit in or feel left out? What if he gets bullied?" She asked, only to stop speaking when his lips landed on hers.

"Hey, Angel will be fine." If anyone was going to get bullied, it was going to be the other kids getting bullied by him—and he couldn’t say this if he wanted to stay alive for long enough to see his son off to school.

....

After a night full of anxiety and excitement in equal portions, she slid out of bed in the morning and decided to make a cup of coffee before making a bento box for Angel’s lunch. Damon had slept over the night before but his side of the bed was cold. He had woken up earlier and she didn’t need to guess. He must have had to rush back to work since he had spent most of the previous day researching Angel’s new school and bringing her enemies for her to punish them.

The enticing aroma downstairs lured her into wondering whether Damon was in the kitchen and when she ascertained that he was, she couldn’t help running over and hugging him from behind.

"Good morning, sleepyhead. You finally woke up." He turned to hug her.

"What are you doing? Making me breakfast in bed?" She joked, knowing that was not close to what he was doing. Catching sight of mickey mouse shaped apple pieces, she instantly knew he was making Angel’s lunch.

She marveled at the car-shaped cookies in the snack section and was instantly sure Angel would scarf down everything in his bento box.

"What’s the main potion?" She asked curiously.

"Rice balls and some of the grilled chicken from yesterday’s dinner. He loved it more than anything else."

She continued clinging onto him as he organized the food he had already prepared in the food flask and slotting it in its right position. He then filled the blue racecar-themed water bottle and kept everything in Angel’s lunchbag. This was really happening.

"I think it’s time to wake up the newest student in town." He kissed her cheek. Knowing the mixed feelings she had about sending Angel off to school, he led the way to Angel’s room to wake him up. He soon realized he didn’t need to. Not only was Angel awake, but he had already freshened up and was wearing his school uniform.

Swept off her feet by his cuteness, Avery picked him up for several kisses on his cheek before putting him down. "Good morning, Angel. Are you ready for breakfast?"

He scrunched his face and she instantly knew it was because of what she had called him. She chuckled. "If I call you ’baby’ in the presence of your classmates, they may make fun of you." She explained, meeting his disapproving glare.

"So what?" He suddenly asked, both shocking and mesmerizing her.

"Then I’ll gladly call you my baby no matter what." She once again picked him up for a hug. He hugged his father and ran downstairs to let his parents chase him. Avery couldn’t help laughing to Damon. "Did you hear that? He literally said ’so what?’" She mimicked his tone. "Like a little tyrant. Hey, do you think he will take after his father and become one of those tyrannical bosses?"

"If he were to become a tyrannical little boss, it will be because he took after his mother."

"Hey!" She complained. She had wanted to poke fun at him, only for it to be turned on her.

....

Breakfast felt like a blur. All she could remember was Angel gobbling his food down so he could get to school faster. The boy couldn’t be any more excited in his new school uniform and with his backpack on his bag. When they arrived at the school parking lot, he would have jumped out of the car if it the child safety lock was not on.

He did jump out as soon as the door was opened, though, and an excited yell for him made him forget all about his parents. His new friend had recognized him and was waving him over, having just arrived too.

They had been worried he would cry on his first day to school but instead of crying and throwing a fit, he hugged his friend and offered her a lolly, and they seemed to have hundreds of things to talk about. They used this chance to finish up the admission procedure. Angel barely noticed them saying goodbye to him. However, when the bell rang and all the other kids found their way to class except his friend, he finally realized he couldn’t see his parents anymore.

He ran back to the parking lot to check and seeing that their car was gone, he burst into tears.
