The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 791. Scouting For Mages
Time flew past and soon another month was upon them. After the meeting with her brother, Louis left the Vampire Regions together with Malcolm, heading for Greenham to teach magic to as many humans—who would join the battle—as possible. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Louis also had to consider the probability that some would not be compatible. Therefore, he stated that they might not be able to find as many humans as they hoped, but Jael believed that fewer was better.
Regardless of whether they had magic now, they were still humans whom vampires had to protect, and Jael didn’t want too many burdens. Palers weren’t an easy threat to deal with.
From the letters received from Louis, not everyone had been compatible and the first few days had been a little chaotic as Prince Malcolm chose the most suitable people. Louis needed people with the strength and guts to face Palers.
It also didn’t help that many of them only found out about this expedition for the first time, and not a lot of people were willing to help out. Palers were worse than vampires but Humans were grateful that Palers only preferred vampires and actively hunted them. Palers wouldn’t go out of their way to hunt humans, but accidents could happen if people ventured too close to the Nolands.
Out of the kingdom’s army, only a few had been willing to undertake this. No one wanted to fight a war for a species that had done nothing more than attack them for centuries. Some of them were happy Palers existed. They believed Palers were the only things keeping vampires in check, and if they killed all the Palers, humans would be next.
Unfortunately, out of the few that volunteered, only a handful had any luck with magic. Louis was convinced that some might unlock their potential for magic with practice, but he didn’t have the time to spare.
He needed people who could use spells within the first couple of tries, especially those really good with fire spells. He planned to include some healing spells but only after finding and training those who could use fire spells.
Eventually, Malcolm had no other choice but to announce it to the rest of the kingdom. There was no reward, and he was as truthful as possible, letting the people know what they were getting into. Surprisingly, more people were willing to take part than expected.
Louis ended up taking more than two days to go through the crowd, attending to them in groups. It also didn’t help that auditions couldn’t be done in the daytime. Eventually, he got a reasonable number of people—a little over forty.
However, Louis didn’t intend for all forty people to partake in the war. It would be difficult to protect that many, and they wouldn’t be needed for their fighting skills, only to burn Palers. He only intended to pick the best half, or even less.
Humans couldn’t see in the dark, and holding any form of light while attacking Palers was the worst thing to do. It was like holding a beacon while battling creatures that could blend with the night. It was not a good idea.
Hunting Palers in the daytime was also just as bad. These creatures were adept at hiding from sunlight, and even if humans were to find their hideouts, it would be quite difficult to expose them to daylight, as that would require breaking into caves and digging into the rough grounds of the Nolands. Humans wouldn’t get far before sundown, and by sundown, they would all be killed.
Louis not only needed people who were good with magic but who could also adapt to vampires’ schedules. The worst part was that he had about three weeks to teach them all they needed to know, as he had spent almost a week finding suitable candidates. The spells they were going to learn were only going to consist of fire spells; Louis hoped that would make things easier.
It didn’t.
The second week was more chaotic, and he made no progress at all. The participants were falling asleep and losing mana too easily. They needed to take frequent breaks, and after a few days, some had dropped out.
Louis wasn’t deterred by this, as he originally wanted a smaller number, and if they dropped out by themselves it was easier. What bothered him more was that he was running out of time and couldn’t afford any setbacks.
Training started to get even more grueling, and Louis almost felt bad for the humans, but as more time passed, he started to get a little more confident about this plan and a little more hopeful.
Malcolm was most helpful and made things a little easier for Louis, but unfortunately, only Louis could do all of the tasks, and after a while, he had to forfeit sleep just to make some progress. Malcolm provided a building completely protected from sunlight and with enough space to practice magic.
The crown prince did try to participate in learning magic, but unlike his younger half-sister, he had no such talent; even after multiple tries he couldn’t even make smoke, let alone a single flame. Eventually, he stopped trying and just helped Louis with what he needed. Louis was grateful for his presence, as it did help the morale of the participants.
War wasn’t supposed to commence immediately, but the humans needed to engage in trial runs before their full-blown attacks against Palers. It would be suicidal to thrust these men into war without any prior experience with Palers, and for this Louis needed to work even faster.
By the end of the first month, Louis was confident about a decent number, even though this number was half of what he originally wanted. However, these were the ones he could train the fastest and was most confident in.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to teach them anything besides fire magic, and even Louis was worried about this. There was barely anything he could do except send them out to the Vampire Regions quickly.
