The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 792. The Mages Have Arrived
Mauve stood with her right hand underneath her stomach as the main entrance of the castle opened. He had told her to stay in their room, but Mauve didn’t listen. She had argued that it was only right that the only human in the castle would welcome the new guests, and Jael didn’t have a counterargument.
She stood next to Jael as the first humans arrived, instinctively clinging to him. She didn’t know what to expect as the doors opened; all she knew was what Jael had told her from Louis’s letters.
She did know the number of humans who were expected to spend probably the next couple of months in the Vampire Regions was about ten—the ones Louis could train fast enough to face Palers.
Five humans stepped through the open doors. They looked uneasy as they walked in, immediately looking around. They clearly couldn’t see very well, and when their gaze rested on Mauve and Jael, who stood right in front of them, they stopped walking and stood awkwardly.
There was a little tension in the staring contest; the air crackled as both sides studied the other. Suddenly, Mauve stepped forward, wanting to break the ice. Jael didn’t realize what she was about to do, so he couldn’t stop her in time.
"Welcome," she announced with open arms and a heavy stomach. "Welcome to the Vampire Regions. Thank you for embarking on this most difficult expedition and for wanting to help us."
"Thank you, Princess," one of the men said and stepped forward. "My name is Farrell."
He looked more confident than the rest and didn’t miss that she was staring at her stomach. The man bowed, and the rest of the men followed suit just as Jael moved to stand beside her.
"Farrell, you’re welcome. I am sure your journey must have been tedious and you must be all tired. The servants will lead you to your rooms; please have some rest before the last meal."
The men bowed again, a few glancing awkwardly at her before the servants led them to their quarters. Mauve reached out to grab Jael, feeling a little worried, but she had to do this one more time and was determined to see it through.
Eventually, she welcomed all the men, but there was no sign of Louis. This was not surprising; he had informed Jael he would be arriving a little later. Jael had been displeased about it, but Louis mentioned having to tie up a loose end before he returned to the Vampire Regions to join them in the war. He seemed confident about the mages he had sent, but Jael didn’t trust them unless he saw the mages in action.
Mauve couldn’t help the anxiety she felt about the whole situation. It was going to be a hectic period for her, Jael, and the other people in the castle. They had a war to prepare for, but that wasn’t the worst part. These were the largest number of humans who had ever been in the castle, and they weren’t slaves.
Mauve was worried. She was worried about how both vampires and humans would fare and that with tension this high, it would be very easy for things to go wrong. She hoped they wouldn’t clash and would truly be able to work together.
"Are you okay?" Jael asked as they arrived in their bedroom.
Mauve was sitting in her favorite chair with her hand on her full stomach. It was getting hard to be on her feet for long, and her ankles needed rest.
"Hmm," she replied and lifted her gaze to look at him.
"You look serious," he said as he squatted so they could see eye to eye.
Mauve tucked her lips into her mouth. "I am just a little bit worried," she said, giving in to his intense look. "I know there is nothing to be worried about." She smiled at his expression, knowing she had taken the words right out of his mouth.
"Exactly," he said and smiled back.
Mauve leaned a little forward so she could touch his face, mindful of her stomach. He leaned into her hand, and her heart suddenly felt so full it could burst. She really was the luckiest.
Who would have ever thought she would end up with the love of her life and carrying his child? Barely two years ago, she was cleaning floors, praying she wouldn’t get chased out of her father’s castle.
"I just want you to be safe," she replied.
"I would never dare do anything I couldn’t handle," he glanced at her stomach. "And our baby is exactly why I can’t wait for the Vampire Regions to be safe."
He placed his hand on her stomach, and Mauve leaned back in her seat. As if feeling the presence of both parents, the baby kicked and Mauve jumped, a smile appearing on her lips as she looked at Jael. He shared her joy, smiling back at her.
Almost immediately, a knock rang out and Mill walked into the room. She bowed to both of them and said, "Sire, My Lady, the last meal is ready."
"Mill," Mauve said excitedly. "Thank you."
"My Lady," she smiled. "Is there anything you would like?"
"No, Mill."
Mauve stretched out her hand to Jael to help her to her feet. He pulled her upward while supporting her waist with his other hand. Mauve smiled and leaned against him; it was hard not to.
"My Lady," Mill suddenly called.
Mauve frowned and turned to look at her. The tone of her voice made her slightly worried. "Is something wrong, Mill?"
"No," Mill shook her head. "I-I just wanted to ask about Lord Louis. I see there is no sign of him."
"Yes, he decided to stay behind for a few more weeks. He should return soon," she replied.
Mill nodded. "Thank you, My Lady." She withdrew from the room without another word, leaving Mauve with a puzzled look on her face.
"Did something happen between Mill and Louis?" Mauve asked Jael.
The latter frowned and looked down at her. "What do you mean?"
"I don’t know," she said and shook her head. "Let us go eat."
Mauve didn’t want to dig into something she wasn’t sure of, but it had been bothering her for some time. She shrugged; she was sure they would be fine, but curiosity was eating at her more than anything else.
When they arrived at the dining hall, it was a little crowded—well, just slightly more than usual. Mauve scrunched up her nose as she walked in. Mixed with the smell of food was the smell of people.
It did not bother her; it was just slightly unfamiliar, as she was used to the fact that vampires didn’t smell, and the only thing she could ever pick up from them was the scent of soaps and perfumes.
Everyone stood up as they walked through the door except the ten humans; they seemed confused at first but quickly stood to their feet as they understood what was going on. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
After everyone was seated, food was served onto plates while Mauve’s eyes scanned the hall. Nothing seemed amiss; conversations merely fizzled in and out, and soon enough dinner was over.
Mauve reluctantly left the dining hall after she was done eating. She wanted to speak to the men and would have liked to know their names, but Jael discouraged that and suggested the next night so they would have enough time to get used to the castle without being overwhelmed.
She knew it was just Jael’s way of keeping her away from them, but she couldn’t argue about this. She knew it would be best not to overcrowd them, even if she was excited about humans in the castle.
