Chapter 88: Chapter 88: The Excitement-Loving Cub

Two more days passed peacefully. The arrival of the Stannar Tribe hadn’t caused any internal changes in the Grymdale Tribe. However, the trials brought on by the rainy season grew ever more severe, with new problems emerging one after another.

The most pressing issue was that the tribe’s food reserves were starting to run low.

Elias Moretti stared into The Larder Cave. The stench was overwhelming. The hunted game had grown damp, accelerating its decay. If this went on, the rotting meat would be inedible in a matter of days.

Gable leaned on his Witch Staff, his brow deeply furrowed. "We must find a way to hunt."

With the exception of Evangeline and her two males, food in the tribe was distributed collectively.

Rations had already been reduced. Many cubs and females couldn’t stomach the rotting meat, leaving them to subsist on shriveled, bitter wild fruits. Even those who choked down the spoiled meat would soon turn pale and vomit. Some cubs cried from hunger, while others began to suffer from sharp stomach pains.

Elias Moretti’s nails dug into his palm, his scarlet eyes heavy with burden.

’If this continues, we won’t last until the rainy season ends.’

Gable watched the relentless downpour outside the cave, then lowered his voice and said hesitantly, "Perhaps we should go ask Evangeline? She is a powerful Witch, after all. She hasn’t gone out at all these past few days. Maybe she has a solution?"

Elias Moretti’s hand clenched so tightly it audibly creaked. A self-mocking glint entered his eyes. ’Am I going to have to beg her again?’

But before Elias Moretti could even step out of The Larder Cave, a deafening roar suddenly tore through the curtain of rain.

The sound was like a thunderclap, charged with savage ferocity!

Gable’s face paled. "—It’s Monitor Lizards!"

Elias Moretti’s pupils contracted. Scales instantly erupted over his body, and in the blink of an eye, he transformed into a giant scarlet python, darting out of the cave like a bolt of lightning.

Heavy raindrops pelted his scarlet scales, but he seemed oblivious, raising his serpentine head to stare at the scene outside.

Dozens of iron-scaled Monitor Lizards, each the size of a small hill, fixed their greedy eyes on the Grymdale Tribe. In an instant, they had smashed through the fence and toppled massive trees, leaving a trail of wreckage in their wake.

The tribe instantly erupted into chaos.

The cries of the cubs, the screams of the females, and the urgent roars of the males wove into a cacophony of terror.

The lead Monitor Lizard, however, advanced unhurriedly, for a female was seated upon its back.

The female had fair skin and a lithe body. It was Saskia, the very one who had been abandoned to the Monitor Tribe.

She was draped in a layer of giant lizard scale armor that shielded her from the downpour. Her slender fingers toyed with a lock of her hair. When her gaze met Elias Moretti’s, a strange smile spread across her pale face.

"Elias Moretti, I haven’t yet had the chance to congratulate you on becoming the leader of the Grymdale Tribe."

As she spoke, her swollen belly was exposed to the air. Beneath skin so thin it was nearly transparent, blurry dark shapes writhed violently, as if the young within were desperate to tear their way out.

Elias Moretti stared at her coldly. The next instant, his cavernous jaws gaped open, and his body shot forward like lightning to clash with the invading Monitor Lizards. The ground splintered under the terrifying power of the Star Pattern.

A sinister smile curved Saskia’s lips. She patted the Monitor Lizard leader beneath her. "Forrest West, if we take all of the Grymdale Tribe’s food, we’ll make it through this rainy season without any trouble."

Forrest West’s forked tongue flicked past his fangs. He let out a sinister cackle as the Seven-star Pattern on his forehead erupted with a blinding light.

Wherever the light reached, the wet sand and gravel on the ground twisted and writhed as if alive, lashing out toward the mottled giant pythons of the Grymdale Tribe.

So the Monitor Tribe’s leader was a Seven-star Patterned Beastman.

Elias Moretti’s pupils were blood-red, his eyes filled with an icy chill. A black, poisonous mist billowed from his body.

The black mist seemed to have a life of its own, spreading until it coalesced in the air into a scarlet giant python with vicious fangs. It lunged toward Forrest West and Saskia. As the mist roiled, the hissing of serpents echoed throughout the tribe.

...

With the earthquake-like commotion outside, Evangeline couldn’t possibly sleep.

She stood at the cave entrance, coolly observing the earth-shaking battle between lizards and pythons.

The two Beastman Tribes were already mortal enemies. After their last encounter, the Monitor Tribe’s retaliation was inevitable. The hungry rainy season was merely a pretext for them to finally show their true colors.

Just then, Thorne’s tense voice sounded from behind her. "Eva, I..."

"Go," Evangeline said, turning to face Thorne. "We are part of the Grymdale Tribe. We can’t just stand by and do nothing."

His serpentine tail was coiled, scraping messy tracks into the ground. The Monitor Tribe’s sudden attack had clearly stirred the warrior’s blood in his veins. After all, he was still a member of the Grymdale Tribe.

Thorne’s taut serpentine tail finally relaxed, sweeping across the ground in a smooth arc.

He gave Evangeline a deep, meaningful look, his dark green eyes seeming to hold a thousand unspoken words. The next instant, black scales washed over his entire body. He transformed into a massive dark python and vanished into the blood-tinged rain.

Evangeline withdrew her gaze, her eyes catching sight of Caden Albright sitting leisurely at the stone table. He was idly twirling a bone knife between his fingers, paying no mind to the cataclysm unfolding in the Grymdale Tribe.

Suddenly, a giant python’s agonized hiss echoed from outside the cave.

Just as Evangeline was about to turn to check on the battle, her expression changed abruptly and she froze on the spot.

Caden Albright had been watching Evangeline the whole time. Seeing her reaction, his nonchalant expression instantly hardened.

He moved like a phantom, appearing at Evangeline’s side in a flash and pulling her into his arms. But the moment his fingertips touched her taut skin, his entire body seemed to freeze over. A rare tremor entered his voice.

"Eva? What’s wrong?"

The words had barely left his lips when he smelled it: the cloying, sweet, and familiar scent of blood filling the air.

His pupils contracted violently!

’This is... Eva’s blood!’

Evangeline clutched her swelling belly, her brows knitting together. "I’m going into labor."

As she spoke, warm blood trickled down her calves, blooming on the ground like startlingly crimson flowers.

Evangeline took a deep breath. The sensation was all too familiar, so she wasn’t particularly nervous. Leaning on Caden Albright’s rigid frame, she let out a small laugh. "This little one... certainly knows how to... pick a dramatic moment."

A contraction shattered her words into fragments.

"I’ll—I’ll go, I’ll..." Caden Albright was at a complete loss, supporting Evangeline with a deathly pale face. His thin, blood-drained lips trembled violently. The usually calm and collected man couldn’t even string a coherent sentence together.

"I can do this myself." Evangeline gripped Caden Albright’s trembling wrist and started toward the stone bed. With every step, more blood seeped out.

Compared to Caden Albright, a first-time father, she was far calmer.

With such a major crisis unfolding in the Grymdale Tribe, finding help would be difficult. It was better to rely on herself than others.

When it came to childbirth, she was a seasoned veteran.

Cold sweat dripped from Evangeline’s clenched jaw. Her beautiful face was ashen, but the moment she reached the stone bed, she deftly tore open her Beast Skin Skirt. The motion was crisp and practiced.

Caden Albright seemed to have lost all reason. He just held her hand, his eyes bloodshot, every nerve ending in his body trembling as if his very soul were about to shatter.

Evangeline’s brow furrowed. "Go boil some water," she ordered coldly.

Caden Albright snapped back to his senses. Meeting Evangeline’s gaze, his fingertips trembled as he turned and stumbled off to boil water.
