Chapter 277: A battle of pride

Karissa walked down the halls, being trailed by her attendants. She had to make Alfonso withdraw from the match. Cedric was up to no good, that was something she was certain of.

"Where is he?" Karissa demanded.

"He is in his waiting room, your highness." The attendant answered him.

"Lead the way, that boy will be the death of me." Karissa sighed.

In the arena, the officiator was still announcing the matches while the knights rested for the next round. Without a doubt, Alfonso had already heard the news. He did have a jealous husband behind him but this was hilarious and unexpected.

Cedric has affection for his wife despite always lingering close to Callista. Alfonso had a smile on his face. "This was his plan all along. So I am to fight against Cedric." He chuckled his hand rubbing his jaw.

Alfonso’s Right-hand man, Kaleb, sighed at the whole scenario. "I am afraid that is the case," Kaleb answered in a solemn voice.

"This will be fun," Alfonso chuckled a grin on his face. The bastard heart did beat Abrielle. It was a rather interesting fact he was discovering.

Kaleb tried to read Alfonso but it was hard figuring out what went through his master’s head. "Do you plan on going on with the match?" Kaleb asked, he was not doubting his master’s abilities but this was Cedric they were talking about. It wasn’t Lucian who at least had a beating heart, and with the way everything happened, it seemed like a set-up.

The first and last winners are meant to fight against each other, which is why Cedric made sure his match was the last. Secondly, Elias was paired with Alfonso so that the prince would advance to the next stage. It was all a perfect plan organized by Cedric.

Alfonso knew this, too; Cedric did this because of Abrielle. He knew that his calm face was all a mask. Alfonso had seen Cedric way earlier. That was why he leaned forward, making it seem like they were having an intimate moment, leading Cedric’s imagination to go wide.

The prince didn’t answer him as his mind delved deeper into his thoughts. The door was abruptly pushed open, the creaking sounds of the door drawing Alfonso’s attention to the door.

"Everyone get out!!" Karissa’s voice shook everyone in the room aside from Alfonso, who wasn’t shaken by his mother’s appearance. Her face was scrunched up, displeasure written all over her face.

"Your Highness," Kaleb stuttered, giving Alfonso a side glance, asking if he should go ahead or not. The prince waved off. Kaleb had to ask for Alfonso’s approval since Alfonso was his master. Karissa’s face turned red understanding the silent interactions between the prince and his knight

Kaleb bowed at the prince’s mother before retreating from the scenes. Alfonso was left with Karissa, who had a lot of things on her mind.

"It is quite early for you to look so vexed." Alfonso chimed nonchalantly overlooking his mother’s expression.

"Withdraw from the fight Alfonso. " Karissa simply said, stating her interest. Alfonso signed knowing this was why she was here.

"You can’t expect me to withdraw like a coward, mother. I have my honour as a man." Alfonso’s voice was firm. Karissa felt like her world was over. Why was he not listening? She kept on telling him these things over and over again but he refused to listen.

"If you fight against him we both know you will look more like a coward than when you withdraw. We all know why he is doing this? It is because you refused to listen to me and kept on pestering his wife." Karissa’s hand flew in the air. She stomped into the room, standing a few steps away from Alfonso, who was stressed because of his mother.

His face was buried in his palms he rubbed on his face. He was having a slight headache now.

"I have an image to keep, mother. It is just a duel Cedric won’t kill me or something that crazy." Alfonso groaned, getting up on his feet, his height overshadowing his mother. Karissa’s eyes welled up with tears.

She reached out for Alfonso’s hands, her voice low and steady. "Please listen to me and end this madness, Alfonso. It is not worth it." Karissa pleaded with Alfonso. His heart was touched but he could not give up without a fight.

Alfonso sighed, his hand reaching out for his mother’s face. Karissa’s heart squeezed knowing he was going to say no to her suggestion. His lips parted. "I can’t give up without a fight. How will I face my father after that or have the guts to fight for the throne?" He asked Karissa. She was at a loss for words.

Her hazel eyes, similar to Alfonso’s eyes, dulled, "We can make up an excuse. Please do this for me. He isn’t a man but a demon, Alfonso." Her motherly instinct didn’t want to give up. She could not watch Alfonso. Suffering, she remembered the number of sleepless nights she had whenever he was sent to battle.

Alfonso was her only pillar. The prince leaned forward placing his forehead on hers, both of their eyes closed. "My entire life Cedric had never taken me seriously. I was always seen as the weakest of my brothers. This is not just a duel of strength but a battle of pride; please don’t take this from me."

There was a slight knock on the door and next followed Kaleb’s voice. "Your Highness, the duel is about to start." Kaleb’s voice ran from against the door. Alfonso’s eyes opened and he moved away from his mother while his finger wiped the tears at the corner of her eyes.

"Alfonso, don’t," her voice was feeble; she understood his sentiment. In Alfonso’s entire life, he was always the son in the background, completely overshadowed by his brothers. freēnovelkiss.com

"Wish me luck, mother, and who knows, I might win." He chimed with a sweet smile that reached his eyes. He ignored the pleading look in her eyes and strode to the door.

"Doing this won’t make her love you, Alfonso. Even if she does, she is forever bound to her husband until death." Karissa’s voice stopped Alfonso in his tracks. His gaze flickered.

"This has nothing to do with love, Mother, and he isn’t some type of immortal." Alfonso smoothly denied the claims in his mother’s words.
