This Life, I Will Be the Protagonist-Chapter 269: A Deal I Want to Make
After spending time on Dragon Island, Rita and Nivalis had left all their food, drinks, and recreational items behind. So, after their meal, they needed to restock their bags and interdimensional space, as well as buy a few items for their upcoming underwater journey.
As for the inflatable boat, Rita wasn’t bothered with it. After the incident with the Flood Dragon, where she had been flying on Nivalis’ back and got caught in a picture, she decided against bringing it this time. Given the sensitivity of their destination, both she and Nivalis would be using invisibility throughout the trip—or just resting on the seabed.
They didn’t need a locator either; with the game’s map, Rita was perfectly fine without one.
It was the 29th today, and their departure was scheduled for tonight. If all went smoothly, they’d return by early November in time for Zoey’s concert and get an attribute boost.
However, while packing, Nivalis kept feeling that the sea trip would be boring. Rita had told her that no electronic devices were allowed on this journey. She had made a few game consoles for Nivalis using engineering skills, but Nivalis had already grown tired of them. In the end, Rita packed a few Sudoku books for her—although Rita didn’t expect her to actually have the chance to play them. Sometimes, Nivalis was easy to please.
Rita hadn’t put the cat’s nest back in the backyard either. She had refilled the cat food and found a few resident cats in the yard. She informed them that the cat food was in the row of cabinets near the back, already divided into portions. If the food ran out, they could just help themselves. If any visiting cats came, they’d need to entertain them.
The backyard also had a sensor-controlled water faucet, so the cats wouldn’t run out of water.
—"If a new cat comes, remember to give it a drink from the second row of the cabinet. Male cats drink from the triangular bottles, female cats from the round ones. If it’s a kitten, don’t worry about giving it anything."
The chubby orange and white cat nodded seriously, committing Rita’s instructions to memory.
Everything was going smoothly, except for one cat—the tabby who liked to poop in the dragon manure box—was being a bit too chatty.
Tabby: "The leaves always turn yellow, and the cat’s heart always grows cold… You think we don’t know what that drink is for?"
Nivalis: "What is it for?"
Tabby: "The cat extinction plan!!"
Nivalis: "Wow!"
Tabby: "Do you know what kind of reputation your yard has in our cat circle?"
Nivalis: "What reputation?"
Rita: "…"
She felt that Nivalis could have made a good comic partner, or even a great middleman in a live stream room. It was a shame she didn’t take those paths.
In the end, Rita opened cans of cat food for all the cats in the backyard to get the tabby to stop talking.
The sky turned dim, and the city streetlights flickered on. After activating their invisibility, Rita and Nivalis flew toward the sea.
The two of them, invisible, reached the shore and gently entered the water. They proceeded to move underwater, and what once felt like a long distance, now only took them less than half a day to cover.
Once they arrived at their designated location, they didn’t deactivate their invisibility. Instead, they continued to descend slowly. Rita drank a potion for underwater breathing, lying on Nivalis’s back. Nivalis provided her with a bubble to make it more comfortable.
It wasn’t until they had descended nearly a hundred meters that Rita finally dispelled her illusionary form.
From the moment they entered the sea, Rita activated her Hunting Eye skill. She soon noticed a few wandering sirens nearby. It was inevitable—on land, there were instance portals, and the deep sea wasn’t much different. However, many places were unreachable by humans.
Rita shot a few rounds, easily eliminating the nearby sirens. It was a simple task.
They continued descending, and after a while, Nivalis said, "I sensed it!" Her wings pressed tightly against her body, and she accelerated downward.
As the surroundings grew darker, Rita took out a prepared underwater spotlight. Soon, she felt the same imposing aura she had first experienced when encountering Holy Cup, North Year, and the other great dragons. A few new negative status effects appeared: Fear, Battle Hesitation, Slowed Thought, Slowed Spellcasting.
It was only then that Rita realized how comfortable she had been on Dragon Island, thanks to North Year’s protection. At the time, she had thought the large dragons were simply suppressing their aura.
Nivalis used a skill North Year had taught her on Dragon Island—Dragon Clan’s Friend—which granted immunity to dragon intimidation.
Instantly, Rita’s negative statuses vanished. However, Nivalis’s version wasn’t as powerful as North Year’s, and Rita only gained two positive status effects instead.
The light from the underwater torch cut through the darkness. Nivalis paused and looked down. "It’s right there."
Below them was a massive, decaying shipwreck.
On Rita’s game map, a red dot appeared on the location. Was there something inside the wreck?
She doubted the dragon intimidation effect was only for her. Since sensing the aura of the Dragon Ancestor’s reverse scales, she hadn’t encountered any living creatures. The red dot was unlikely to be an alien race.
Rita ate a dish made with her Food God talent for a defense boost, took out Ember and Falling Star, and used a disguise skill to change her appearance and alter her information. Then, she swam toward the wreck with Nivalis.
She didn’t transform into a siren or any other alien species, as fighting underwater in an unfamiliar form could lead to mistakes. Here, invisibility was unnecessary—the silence of the deep sea amplified every sound she made. However, Nivalis could still stay invisible, so Rita shrank her into a small jellyfish form, changing her information and hiding her behind Rita’s ear, ready to strike if needed.
The wreck wasn’t overly luxurious, but it was far from simple. It had two levels. Rita searched the deck and lit up the map to ensure she could quickly escape to the ship’s cabin during battle.
After making all the necessary preparations, she slowly swam inside.
However, there were no living creatures inside. The only thing she found was a crystal coffin.
As soon as she entered the cabin, the coffin emitted a faint glow, lighting up a human-body, fish-tail statue inside.
Another statue. Strangely, its face was identical to the one Snow Pile had conjured with magic.
Jameson, the middle-aged version?
Rita warily looked at the statue in the crystal coffin. The red dot from Hunting Eye was clearly pointing to this figure! And above the statue, there was a line of golden text:
[Jameson 0-Level 0% | 0%]
This data was even stranger.
In her mind, Nivalis said, "The reverse scale is inside his stomach."
Rita didn’t move but activated the energy-saving mode and chose detailed analysis.
