As soon as he entered the nightclub, the noisy and vulgar music flooded his ears, stimulating Chen Ke’s eardrums with a brainwashing melody that looped incessantly, causing him to frown involuntarily.
Chen Ke didn’t like places like this.
The modest nightclub had two dance floors, and in the DJ booth next to them, a Black DJ was scratching records—that was the source of the noise.
A bunch of men and women, dressed in counterfeit trendy clothes bought from second-hand shops, writhed on the dance floors.
In the pitch-black environment, colorful beams of blue, purple, yellow, and red weaved through each other like swords ripping through the black abyss, ceaselessly sweeping across the crowd.
The scene reminded Chen Ke of a country outhouse at night, where the toilet pit teemed with a pulsing mass of shit-yellow maggots.
...
“Chen?! Where the hell did you go??” Pihom suddenly looked around.
Chen Ke glanced at the corner of his eye at the “Dark Concealment 90%” prompt and laughed.
“Keep up!” Chen Ke grabbed Hall, yelling into his ear.
It was only then that Hall realized Chen Ke was right beside him, his face a portrait of confusion.
Spying on Hall’s awareness of him, Chen Ke noticed that the effect of Dark Concealment would disappear if he touched him and wouldn’t reactivate for some time.
This meant that if he were discovered, unless he completely escaped the observer’s line of sight, he wouldn’t be able to re-enter Dark Concealment.
The suit’s enhanced stealth effect wasn’t as overpowered as Chen Ke had imagined; it wasn’t close to the level of invisibility in darkness where one could act with impunity.
“Where do you think he’ll be?” the two squeezed past the dance floor, Chen Ke asked.
“Not sure, let’s check the booths,” Hall suggested.
They walked out of the dance floor and looked toward the rows of semi-enclosed seats in a dark corner, separated by curtains.
These seats could accommodate five to six people, where clients interacted harmoniously with call girls and sampled drinks that were at least 80% cheaper than outside.
Hall checked the faces of the customers seated there; some were too dark to make out clearly. Chen Ke, however, bathed in darkness, was invisible to them.
He looked up to check out the second floor—it was an extension of the balcony bar within the nightclub. In corners untouched by the light, several guards were patrolling, and a few customers held drinks, leaning on the railing and watching the dancers below.
At that moment, he saw a gaunt man wearing sunglasses, with a bodyguard at his side.
Chen Ke squinted and scrutinized the man, noticing he pointed at Hall, said something to the bodyguard, and then turned to walk through a door.
Chen Ke sensed something was off. Although he couldn’t be certain, if that man was actually Parchi…
He turned to glance at Hall, intending to warn him, but on second thought, he was in a state of concealment and Parchi didn’t know him. Why expose himself?
He decided to let Hall draw the attention of the bodyguards while he sneaked upstairs.
Pressing himself against the wall, Chen Ke quietly ascended the stairs, watching as three or four bodyguards walked past him head-on without noticing his presence.
With a 95% concealment effect, Chen Ke’s existence could be ignored by most people as long as he didn’t do anything too outlandish.
He saw the bodyguards pat Hall on the shoulder and then punch him in the face. Subsequently, Hall began to resist, but outnumbered, he was lifted out of the nightclub by three guards.
Hall would probably only endure a beating; those bodyguards weren’t likely to be killers.
Chen Ke approached the door the man had entered, trying the door handle—it was, unsurprisingly, locked. Next to the door was a card reader.
He had no lock-picking tools, no drill, and he certainly couldn’t shoot the lock off. Besides, since there was a card reader, there was undoubtedly an alarm system. It seemed necessary to find another way in.
Just then, after dealing with Hall, three bodyguards started heading upstairs. Chen Ke suddenly had a bold idea.
Chen Ke stood on one side of the potted plants, maintaining his invisibility around 80%.
The three bodyguards went upstairs, the lead one pulling out a magnetic card, inserting it into the card reader next to the door, and swiping it. The door clacked, the bodyguard twisting the doorknob and walking in.
Chen Ke held his breath and followed behind the third man into the room, where the lights were much brighter, and his invisibility instantly dropped from 80% to 40%.
As soon as Chen Ke stepped inside, he immediately crouched down, quickly scuttling forward, and hid in a dark corner of the room.
“Wait! Did you just see someone follow us in?” the lead bodyguard asked, puzzled.
The other two bodyguards glanced around the room and peeked outside the door, both looking perplexed.
“Nothing, you probably need to lay off the drugs.”
The bodyguard closed the door, and the three of them sat on the small sofa, playing poker.
Chen Ke moved slowly along the wall, carefully maintaining his invisibility above 50%, avoiding all the overly bright areas.
This room was just a passageway, with a one-way glass wall that allowed a view of the dance floor, but from the outside, it was just a dark layer of glass.
At the end of the room, there was a door ajar, leaking a bit of light.
Chen Ke peeked inside quietly and saw the man who had directed the bodyguards earlier in that room, and at the same time, on the office chair inside, there sat a bald fat man who looked quite imposing. The two seemed to be discussing some secret matter.
Chen Ke leaned against the door, observing through the crack.
“…the courier’s people, I saw them just now, they must be coming for me!” the man said, panicked.
“Don’t panic, Parchi, you are safe here,” the fat man said with a smile.
“I hope so… So, let’s talk business. When will I get my share?” Parchi asked.
“Easy, little brother, they haven’t inspected the goods on the other side yet; they’re waiting for things to cool down… since that incident at West Gold Building, the Administration Bureau has tightened the search on Holy Relics smuggling…” the fat man shook his head.
“Damn, damn, damn!” Parchi rubbed the back of his head, frustrated.
“You have to trust the consortium’s reputation; they only care about the batch of goods, money is not the issue. You just have to wait…” the fat man chuckled.
“I hope Si’s consortium can really keep their promise…” Parchi said.
Si’s consortium?!
Chen Ke’s pupils suddenly narrowed; he pulled out his PPQ45, fitted it with a suppressor, and turned back towards the three bodyguards.
“Hey, hey? This… where did you…”
“Pop, pop, pop…”
Three bullets pierced three heads; Chen Ke didn’t give them any chance, blood and brain matter splattering on the poker cards.
“What was that noise outside?” the fat man asked.
Parchi opened the door and saw Chen Ke’s face.
Chen Ke kicked him in the abdomen, causing Parchi to fall to the ground, clutching his stomach, unable to get up. The fat man pulled a silver revolver from his waist, but before he could raise it, Chen Ke shot his hand into a bloody mess.
“Fuck! Fuck! Where the hell did you come from?? What do you want?” the fat man cursed, clutching his wounded right hand.
Chen Ke walked over, stepping on Parchi’s neck. Parchi’s eyes bulged out, his tongue slightly protruding with a spurt of saliva, then he passed out.
Then, Chen grabbed the fat man’s tie, dragging him over the table to the ground, and pressed the gun against his forehead.
“I ask, you answer,” Chen Ke said in a lowered voice.
