Three Alphas, Fated To One, Played By One, But Mated To One-Chapter 37: Anita’s Choice

Since Anita had chosen to protect me before, it was time for me to do the same.

I never paid kindness with enmity. Also, since she was voluntarily taking care of me when I couldn’t do anything for myself, I had the obligation to help her.

"Karl asked her to take care of me." I said softly, but my voice was loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.

Just as I had expected, I noticed Innocent slightly tremble when she heard Karl’s name and I knew that my gamble had paid off.

Because of her reaction earlier, I figured that she was afraid of Karl and I was just testing the waters now. I didn’t expect my guess to be right.

Now, I had a new protective amulet while in the pack.

At least, against Innocent. Even if she did something to me in the future, she wouldn’t dare to go overboard as long as Karl was still interested in me.

Innocent kept looking at Anita as if to confirm my words and for some reason, Anita just trusted me and nodded her head.

"It was Alpha Karl who told me to come and take care of Valerie. I couldn’t refuse." Anita reiterated my words and Innocent left with her clicking heels.

When she closed the door and her footsteps vanished into the distance, Anita patted her chest in relief.

I smiled at her antics but said nothing.

"Why did she leave when she heard that Alpha Karl asked me to take care of you? It felt as if she was afraid of something." Anita turned to me and asked.

"She is indeed afraid of Karl. I just don’t know why but it works in my favor, so why ask so many questions?" I replied without much thought.

I didn’t care what Karl did anymore. I couldn’t care less if he had threatened Innocent or did something else.

Ever since I heard that conversation, he had become nothing more than a tool to help me survive in this cruel pack. So, now it didn’t matter either. As long as his name acted as a deterrent, I was fine with it.

"You are right Val. It doesn’t matter what the reason is as long as the results are good." Anita replied.

I didn’t want to talk too much to her because I still didn’t know why she was getting close to me.

I picked up my laptop and began my studies again. I wanted to use the time I was idle in the hospital to learn as much as I could. Once I left the hospital, it was back to being a slave and I wouldn’t have any time for learning.

If I can come out proficient in hacking, I could take on tasks on the dark web to make money and prepare for when I leave the pack in the future.

Anita’s POV

Looking at Valerie like this, I felt awe. How could anyone be so calm after everything she has gone through all these years?

She had suffered abuse from all of us yet she still defended me and protected me today.

If she hadn’t mentioned Karl’s name, I am sure Innocent would have dragged me out of this room and tortured me.

She likes to be in control and wants everyone to worship her. Now that I have shown interest in following Valerie, I know my life will not be easy. Not just from Innocent but her other lackeys as well. They won’t let me go, but I know that there is no turning back.

I have chosen to follow Valerie and unless I die, there is no other option.

But this is the first time I have done something that seems rebellious and I have no regrets.

My wolf had insisted that no matter what happens, I must follow Valerie and never betray her. So, I will follow that advice.

Valerie’s POV

I thought that after the scare Anita would leave and not come back. So, when she said she was going to get me food, I thought it was an excuse she had made up to escape after getting scared by Innocent.

However, I agreed immediately. I don’t want to have anything to do with the people in the pack anyway. Even if they show me kindness, how long will it last?

I thought that the only food I would eat was the hospital portion that tasted awful, but at least I have something to eat several times everyday.

Unlike before, even though I worked in the kitchen, I could go hungry for the whole day unless I ate the leftovers of others.

Now, I don’t have too many expectations.

To my surprise, Anita came back with two vacuum hotpots.

"Val, food is here." She said happily and placed them on the table before coming to my bedside to help me sit up straight.

I looked at her for a while before speaking.

"Why did you come back?" I asked softly. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

"I have to bring you food of course. Otherwise, you will have to eat that awful tasting hospital food." Anita replied matter of factly.

Was that what I was asking?

"I mean, I thought you would leave and not come back. Innocent will make things difficult for you in the future if you keep hanging out with me." I finally stated clearly what I thought.

"I know, but I am ready to endure it." Anita replied without a burden whatsoever.

"Why? Why are you doing this? You never used to be this way." I wanted to know the truth.

Her behavior was too weird. No one in the pack wanted to associate with me. Even the guests who visited the pack and found out about me, all treated me like some dirt on their shoes.

Why was Anita behaving so differently?

"Sometimes we have an epiphany and it guides us. That day I accused you of stealing my snacks. I had been instructed by Innocent to make things difficult for you. But when you kept defending yourself and said that you were just cleaning, I thought to myself, why was I being so mean? Why behave like an animal towards another human? Well, we are part animals, but that is no excuse. I felt as if I had been enlightened and decided to follow my heart in the future instead of what others tell me."

Of course, I knew she didn’t tell me the whole truth, but her reasoning was enough for me.

If she had no plans to torture me in the future, then we could be considered friends.
