Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Making Future Plans

"I didn’t mean to hurt you like that," he said again. As if to convince himself more than to convince me.

I stared at him hard.

This was the second time he was saying this, but I didn’t buy it.

"Yes, you did. Now, please let me rest, Alpha." I emphasized the term alpha as if I wanted him and my body that was screaming for him to know that there was a boundary between us that could not be crossed.

He lowered his gaze for a moment before lifting it again and this time, his entire vibe had changed.

"You’ll attend dinner tomorrow," he said abruptly, shifting back into alpha mode. "As my mate."

After those words, he left abruptly, almost slamming the door behind him, but he caught it at the last moment and closed it carefully.

I sighed in relief as I patted my chest. That was tiring. My hands were sweaty and damn. Not from fear but from holding back my restless emotions.

If not for my excellent self control, I would have jumped him long ago.

But only after calming down did the weight of his last statement settle in.

He wanted me to attend dinner as his mate, but what about Innocent?

Was he trying to start a war soon after I had just moved in?

Me attending dinner by his side as his mate would cause chaos not just because of Innocent but her supporters as well.

I still haven’t established myself as the Luna and I couldn’t do something so self-defeating.

I had to find a way to avoid that dinner.

I had just laid down again when the door was pushed open again.

"For Pete’s sake can’t someone have some privacy and peace around here?" I asked in irritation when I heard the clicking of high heels.

Innocent.

Talk of the devil.

What was she doing here?

"So, it’s true?" She asked with so much bitterness I could taste it in the air.

I sat down again in resignation.

"What is true?" I asked flatly.

"You moved next to Mikey." She said sourly again.

But I could smell the anger rolling inside her. It was so dense it was nearly tangible.

"It was what I was told to do." I replied calmly.

"You must be very proud." She said sarcastically.

"I didn’t ask this," I replied evenly.

"Oh please," she scoffed. "You’ve been waiting for this moment your whole life."

Now, that was a lie.

If only she knew.

If only she understood that I had been counting the days to escape this place. This move would only delay me.

"I don’t want your position," I said quietly.

I was indeed not interested in being Mike’s fuck buddy.

"You don’t?" Innocent repeated

"No. I don’t."

That was the truth. I didn’t want that Luna title. All I wanted was freedom and to find out the truth about my father’s death and clear his name and avenge him.

But Innocent didn’t believe me. No one will. No one ever did.

Her face twisted in anger and for a second, I thought she was going to attack me.

But she finally calmed herself down.

Without another word, she turned and walked away.

But I knew this wasn’t over. It was just the beginning.

That night, I sat at the desk in my new room. My laptop open as the glow of the screen reflected in my eyes.

A million dollars wasn’t enough. It was not nearly enough.

If the pack leadership was scheming...If Alpha Demon was pushing for something bigger...If my father’s case was connected to this sudden change...

Then I needed leverage, and money was the biggest leverage one could have.

Information was leverage and so was power, but all this came from money. So, I needed to make more money.

I logged into the dark web quietly. My mentor had already messaged.

"Ready for the next project?"

I smiled faintly because I knew an opportunity had come for me to make more money.

"Send the details." I replied to the message.

If the pack thought moving me into the alpha’s corridor would cage me...then they were wrong.

They had just placed me closer to the heart of their secrets.

I felt Lizzie stir up for the first time in weeks.

"Be more careful." She said through our link.

I smiled more brightly.

"I will." I replied before I felt her presence fade again.

Outside my door, I could sense Mike pacing. He had left my room hours ago. Why was he back again?

I leaned back in my chair and looked toward the wall separating our rooms

"You don’t want me," I murmured under my breath. "But I don’t want you either."

And if fate insisted on placing me in the middle of this storm....

Then I would become the eye of that storm.

I already knew that my appointment as the Luna wasn’t going to be peaceful. Even though it was Alpha Demon who gave the order, he and his wife, Lady Bernice had stepped out of the limelight now.

Moreover, he seemed to be more interested in traveling than watching over the pack now.

I would have to navigate the corridors of power alone. But that was nothing to me. I have been alone since my parents died and I have learned how to handle situations myself.

Something as trivial as carrying the title of Luna wasn’t a big deal to me. Especially when I cared little about the title except for the few benefits it brought.

If I could use it to build my power and make me stronger, then I will use it.

If it could allow me to gain resources I would otherwise lack, then I accept it.

I don’t care if I am mocked as a former slave. That never bothered me one bit.

I don’t care if Mike didn’t want me. I could just as easily lock him out of my life.

And there was Karl. I still needed to find a way to deal with him. I am not ready to lose that chess piece. So, I will find a way to have his support even if he leaves the pack and goes back to his own pack.
