Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Running Forward

They jumped down from bone bridge to bridge untill they reached the last rib bone, they stood at the edge and watched the undead below.

Sensing the aura of the living the undead who were closest flocked their direction, fortunately most were drawn by the turtle which had a stronger life force than them.

They jumped but before they touched the ground he summoned his echo and as he had expected.

The echo had grown stronger and larger, its body was over 20 metres long and standing nearly 5 metres tall.

Its tentacles had grown thicker and longer, able to stretch for over a hundred metres.

Their power showed themselves, unfortunately they still couldn’t attack behind the echo for some reason.

The moment they touched the ground it shook, he commanded the blood feaster echo.

Its tentacles lashed out destroying hundreds of skeletons around them. Then they head a loud roar.

He commanded the echo to run, Oriana was about to use her beast soul but he stopped her.

" You need to conserve your mana." She nodded with understanding. He pulled out light bringer and held it above his his head.

He poured his mana and activated bolster then commanded the echo to bind Oriana with two tentacles.

She didn’t resist and just say down, covered by tentacles they seemed to be able to lower the effect of bolster on her.

Unfortunately physical objects couldn’t fully block it, it was only because the echo was using its mana to shield her that it slightly worked.

While it couldn’t fully block the effect, she might last more than an hour this way. With bolster protecting them, they ran.

The undead were not like the blood Raksha, they did not fear death and lunged at them even through the holy light of bolster.

The bodies of the weaker undead combusted into flames but they didn’t feel the pain.

Last time he used bolster on the undead it didn’t have such an effect, having an ally nearby really made it much stronger.

The undead continued attacking even while burning and because they were already dead.

It took much longer for the flames to fully take them down which was an issue because their flames effected his echo.

The blood feaster echo was an aquatic creature, it did not do well with flames so its power dwindled rapidly.

Even so, its power was not to be underestimated, it waved its many tentacles around sending the burning undead away.

Their flames burnt even more undead and by the time they realised, they were already surrounded by burning undead.

Akaris gritted his teeth, he looked back and saw the zombie ape chasing after them with towering steps that shook the ground.

It was faster than his echo and even more so since it wasn’t being held back by an endless army of undead.

Akaris wanted to snipe it with his bow but he couldn’t use use his right hand while holding light bringer.

To use bolster he needed to hold light bringer with his hand or the skill will be cancelled.

The undead ape kept closing the distance and getting closer, he thought about asking Oriana for help but chose against it.

Her mana pool was much lower and they still had a long way to go, her strength will be needed later.

He cancelled bolster, he figured the echo can hold back the other undead while he delt with the zombie ape.

He took a deep breath and used light blade, although the ability was weak it should be more effective against undead.

He raised his sword above his head and with a loud roar he swung it down with all of his strength.

A crescent blade of light show out, it was 6 metres long and as thin as a needle. It moved faster than his sword slash blade.

Then it hit, the blade of light cleanly cut into the flesh of the zombie ape leaving a large vertical gash on its body.

Akaris sighed, ’ The light blade really is weak.’ he thought but before he could react the wound ignited into flames.

This caught him by a suprise and he almost jumped with joy. The flames spread and covered almost the entire torso of the zombie ape.

He wanted to use light blade again but unfortunately it had a time limit of about 30 minutes.

So he activated bolster again and watched as the undead sent themselves to their deaths, or the equivalent of death for them.

The zombie ape continued chasing them and the flames on its chest did not die out but they stopped spreading.

It sped up and almost caught up to them, 30 minutes hadn’t passed yet and he couldn’t use light blade again.

" If that thing catches up it will slow down a lot." Oriana told him but he knew that already.

He tried to think of a solution but only two came to mind and he didn’t like either of them.

He could either leave the echo to hold back the zombie ape and run on foot or cancel bolster to use his other means of attack.

Bolster was helping against the other undead, it wasn’t taking them out instantly but it had burnt a lot of them. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

He sighed, " You might need to take action, I’ll give you a signal when." He reached out and pulled his bow and placed light bringer on his hip.

The moment his hand left the blade handle, bolster was cancelled. The undead around them seemed to gain more strength.

The holy light of bolster wasn’t just burning them it was weakening them and with it gone, they regained their strength.

Akaris waved his hand and took out a giant sword and threw it at Oriana. " You had that the whole time?" She asked with irritation.

If she had this giant blade she could’ve joined the fight without using her beast souls.

Oriana had insanely high physical stats, comparable to that of monsters and beasts and she grew even stronger after the recent evolution of her bloodline.

Its evolution did not just give her the ability to also integrate the soul of monsters and dark creatures but it increased her stats by some magnitudes.

Especially will, unlike beasts who were just animals that can use mana, monsters were creatures of the abyss.

Evil attributed creatures, integrating their souls could corrode your mind so a strong will was a necessity.

Her other stats had grown as well, especially endurance and strength. She grabbed the sword and equipped it.

Then took a deep breath, a skeleton jumped up and lunged at her. Akaris didn’t make the echo protect her.

Oriana swung the blade, it drew a wide arc across the air and cleaved the skeleton cleanly in half.
