Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Only the Villa, No Compensation

Miles Monroe stepped in front of everyone.

Penelope Langley gently said, "Since you’re back, go see your grandpa first. We can talk about other things once you’re done."

Miles nodded and looked at Vera Yves. "Vera, come with me to see Grandpa."

Jean Monroe, who had been silent, stood between them, "Miles, you should go in by yourself first."

Vera tried to step back, but Miles grabbed her wrist firmly, "Dad, Grandpa watched Vera grow up. I think he’d want to see her too."

Father and son locked eyes, the atmosphere tense, but eventually, Jean gave way for them.

In the hospital room, Old Master Monroe was on a ventilator, unconscious.

Miles called out to him a few times, and the old man opened his eyes groggily, mumbling some indistinct words.

His gaze swept over to Vera, and he reached out a hand toward her.

Vera stepped forward and held his hand, "Grandpa Monroe."

Old Master Monroe squeezed her hand and mumbled a few more words.

Vera softly comforted him until he closed his eyes again in a daze.

Then, Vera assessed his current physical condition.

Miles asked quietly, "Vera, do you have confidence?"

Vera nodded; Grandpa had treated several similar patients before.

Miles breathed a sigh of relief.

"But..."

Miles smiled, "Don’t worry, just focus on treating Grandpa. I’ll handle everything else."

They left the hospital room.

The Monroes all had somber expressions. As the two came out, only Zoe Monroe approached, her eyes red, "Vera, is my grandpa going to be okay?"

Vera nodded, and Zoe finally exhaled in relief.

"I’m telling you now, I’m the first to disagree with Vera treating Grandpa! Even if her grandpa were still alive, I wouldn’t agree!" Matthew Monroe declared firmly.

None of the Monroes responded, seemingly in agreement.

Miles just looked at him calmly before turning to Vera, "I’ll take you home first."

The two of them walked into the elevator,

Vera calmly said, "I’ll first write a prescription and then go buy the medicine. I’ll send you detailed instructions on how to decoct it. Let Grandpa Monroe drink it for three days as per the prescription."

Miles nodded, his gaze falling on her somewhat pale face, "Sorry, you had to make the trip so early."

Vera shook her head, "Running this errand for Grandpa Monroe is nothing. I’ll go with you to buy the medicine."

"It’s still early; you should rest for a bit. I can buy them myself."

"There’s a lot of fake traditional Chinese medicine on the market now, and it’s hard for the unfamiliar to distinguish." Especially since Grandpa Monroe’s condition is serious, there can’t be any mistakes with the herbs.

Vera got into The Monroes’ car with Miles, who handed her a pen and paper. Vera wrote down the prescription on it.

Then, they went to three different traditional Chinese medicine shops before finally gathering all the necessary herbs.

Miles was going to take her back to the villa, but Vera asked him to change the route to The Yves Family.

When the car stopped, Miles got out and opened the car door for her, and Vera thanked him politely.

Miles didn’t hurry to leave, "Vera, this time I’m back in the country, I don’t plan to leave again."

Vera was taken aback for a moment, then smiled at him, "Welcome back."

A gust of cold wind blew, and Miles stepped forward to tighten her scarf, "When will you accept me again?"

Vera lowered her head, "Miles, we’ve grown up. We can never be like we were when we were kids, can we?"

His sudden departure did make her angry, upset at his indifference, and that someone else was more important to him than she was.

But the feelings she had were just one-sided.

When that sweet and bitter affection received no response, she had already let go completely.

That wholehearted reliance was because of affection; how could it possibly return?

Miles looked at her helplessly.

Vera smiled at him again, "But, in the future, I’ll still consider you my brother, but this sister has already married and can’t be as clingy as before."

Miles felt a bit relieved, "Go back and get some rest; you don’t look too good."

Vera nodded.

As Vera entered the living room, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID; it was an unfamiliar number.

Vera declined the call while changing her shoes.

The caller quickly sent a message—"Miss Yves, I’m President Valentine’s attorney."

The phone rang again, and Vera muted it before picking up the call after returning to her bedroom.

"Miss Yves, hello, I’m Justin Ford. You can call me Attorney Ford. President Valentine has asked me to draft a new divorce agreement, particularly the asset division part. I need to discuss this with you."

Vera tightened her grip on her phone. She had downloaded a template online back then and was aware of what she was entitled to in the asset division.

Vera asked coldly, "What part is Winston Valentine unhappy with?"

"Miss Yves, don’t misunderstand. I’ve seen the previous divorce agreement; you didn’t ask for much. President Valentine actually wants to reorganize the asset division. He hopes you can give up your marital home, and he will compensate you in other ways..."

Thinking back to Cecilia Vaughn’s outburst at the villa, it turns out he’s fighting for that house for her.

"I only want the villa, no compensation." Vera hung up the call, completely exhausted, and lay down, falling asleep almost instantly.

In her haze, she wondered how he was not disgusted by the thought of bringing Cecilia Vaughn into their marital home, doing those things in the bed they had once shared countless times.

Vera slept until the afternoon when the phone ringing woke her up. Seeing the caller ID, she hesitated before answering.

Old Mrs. Valentine laughed, "Vera, I’m making dumplings today. You and Winston come over tonight for dinner."

"Grandma, I..."

"What? I personally cook, and you still won’t come?" Old Mrs. Valentine said firmly, "If you don’t come, Grandma will personally drag you over."

Vera had no choice but to agree, hanging up the call. After some thought, she called Winston Valentine.

The call went through after a few rings.

"The old lady wants you and me to come back to the old house for dumplings tonight. I can’t refuse; you decline."

Winston sighed, "If you can’t refuse, do you think I can?"

I don’t care if you can or not!

Vera was about to speak, but Winston coldly said, "Don’t forget our agreement—at least this month, play your part well in front of Grandma."

A third of the month had already passed; just endure it a bit longer.

Vera got up to change, asking indifferently, "When will you come with me to get the divorce certificate?"

"Why rush? We should pick an auspicious day."

Vera thought he was unreasonable. Just as she was about to hang up, Winston added, "I’ll come pick you up later."

Ending the call, Vera tossed her phone aside. Pick me up? As if we’re that close.

Vera changed and drove herself to The Valentine Family’s old residence.

Winston Valentine asked his driver to drive to The Yves Villa, sent a WeChat to Vera, only for a red exclamation mark to pop up. She had already blocked him on WeChat.

Winston hesitated for a moment before calling her.

Vera ignored it, simply sending him a message—I’m already here.

Winston then instructed the driver to head to the old residence. If it weren’t for the fact that they hadn’t yet signed the divorce certificate, his number would probably also be on her blacklist.

Winston barely stepped into the living room when Cecilia Vaughn playfully linked her arm through his, "Winston, why are you so late?"

Vera happened to come out of the side room and saw the two of them so close.
