Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 97: The One Not Chosen
"Jane Shea!" Someone spotted the newcomer and exclaimed in surprise.
Vera Yves also paused for a moment, not for any other reason but because Jane Shea was wearing the same gown as her.
Jane’s hair was styled high, revealing her long, fair neck. Her gaze fell on Miles Monroe, and her smile was radiant.
Miles’s expression darkened slightly.
Penelope Langley was already upset with Miles Monroe for deciding on his own to invite Vera Yves for the first dance, and now, seeing Jane, her good upbringing was on the brink of collapse.
"Who invited her? Get her out of here!"
Jane replied with a smile, "Mrs. Monroe, I walked in with an invitation."
Penelope looked at the woman in front of her; the immaturity had long faded from her features, exuding elegance and confidence.
"Is this how The Monroe Family entertains guests?"
People around began to gossip. The affair between Miles Monroe and Jane Shea had been a scandal in the circle.
After Miles returned home and began dating, everyone thought the matter was settled.
It seemed now that things weren’t so simple.
"A guest is a guest." Mason Monroe’s expression was unclear, "Miss Shea, feel free."
Jane picked up a glass of red wine nearby, swirled it, and slowly walked towards Miles Monroe.
The crowd finally noticed she and Vera Yves were wearing identical gowns.
Jane smiled at Vera, "Vera, it’s been a long time, you look beautiful tonight!"
Vera had regained her composure and stepped away from Miles, "It’s been a while."
"I remember this gown is the only one of its kind in the country, it’s bespoke, who is wearing a knockoff?"
"Jane has worn several haute coutures from D-brand before, she’s a celebrity, wearing a fake would make it hard for her in the fashion world!"
"Vera is Winston Valentine’s ex-wife, I heard she got a lot of money in the divorce, not so broke as to wear a knockoff, right?"
Everyone was discussing animatedly.
Jane looked at Miles once again with a smile, "Miles, it’s been so long, surely you won’t mind my presence?"
Miles’s face turned icy cold, noticing the murmurs around, not wanting to cause a commotion, he grabbed Jane’s wrist and dragged her out of the banquet hall.
Jane turned her head and smiled at Vera, with a touch of triumph in her eyes.
Vera shivered, as if she was transported back to when that suffocated feeling almost swallowed her.
She took her first steps.
Stella Valentine jumped out from nowhere, blocking Vera’s path with her phone.
She waved her phone, "D-brand’s design director has already claimed Jane’s dress on Weibo! Vera, you divorced my brother and got so much money, seeking a rich husband, yet can’t afford even this?"
Vera glared at her coldly, "Move aside!"
"Why are you so cheap? Clinging to Miles Monroe every day, do you know his status? And yours? Even if you weren’t divorced, you’re not suitable for him!" Stella taunted, "Moreover, you’re just second-hand goods now!"
Zoe Monroe heard Stella’s words and stepped forward to help Vera.
Ruby Shelby pulled her back, "Behave yourself! I’ve told you to stay away from her! Bad company corrupts good character, her reputation in the circle is already bad! Getting too close will make it hard for you to find a husband in the future!"
"Mom!" Zoe was fuming.
"I’ve always known she was just a gold digger!"
"A woman from a small family like The Yves Family wearing a knockoff is no exception!"
"If she hadn’t climbed into Winston Valentine’s bed, could she even marry into The Valentine Family?"
"Miles was just playing with her, marrying her was out of the question!"
Each word was like a dagger stabbing her heart.
Vera thought she was immune, but those words still hurt.
"Who are you calling second-hand goods?" Hannah Hayes stormed over from the crowd, grabbing a wine glass to splash.
Vera came to her senses and hugged Hannah tightly, not wanting the birthday banquet to be ruined because of her.
"Mom, it’s Grandpa Monroe’s birthday, let’s not act impulsively, let’s leave."
Hannah was furious, pointing at Stella Valentine, ready to curse for three hundred rounds, "You Valentine Family is simply too bullying!"
Harry Yves came over and pulled Hannah away, "Enough, don’t let others laugh at us anymore!"
Unwillingly, Hannah followed him out, Vera trailing behind them.
Stella Valentine wasn’t satisfied, seeing a waiter passing by, she grabbed a tray and threw it at Vera, "You gold digger, go die!"
"Clang!"
The tray and wine glass clattered onto the floor.
The banquet hall suddenly fell silent as if one could hear a pin drop.
Vera fell into a warm embrace.
Stella saw the man who rushed forward, scared and stepped back.
Winston Valentine’s back was soaked. He turned around, his expression dark, glaring at Stella.
Facing his gaze, Stella shivered, "T...third brother, I was standing up for you!"
"Isn’t this enough embarrassment? Get out!"
"Vera is the embarrassing one, not me..."
"Miss Valentine, you seem to have had too much to drink." Penelope walked over, her good manners restrained her from cursing, "Maybe you should rest in the lounge for a while, don’t you think?"
Stella saw Penelope’s displeased expression, realizing what she had done, slinked away.
Mason Monroe also stepped forward, addressing everyone, "Just a minor incident, everyone should carry on."
Vera pushed Winston away and walked out of the banquet hall, only to run into the returning Miles.
Miles saw Hannah and Harry were visibly angry; noticing Vera’s pale face, he sighed, "Vera..."
Vera acted as if she didn’t see him, continuing to walk outside.
Miles attempted to follow her, but Penelope called out to him, "Miles!"
"Vera, give me a few minutes, I’ll take you home!"
Vera didn’t hesitate, the waiter opened the door for her, and she nodded in thanks.
The three of them stood at the elevator.
"Vera, Mom spent over two million on this gown, it couldn’t be a knockoff!"
Vera didn’t respond.
Hannah continued, "Do you want to wait for Miles, he said he’d take you back?"
The elevator doors opened, and all three stepped inside.
Hannah was still talking, but Vera couldn’t hear clearly anymore; she reminisced about long ago when she waited foolishly at the entrance of the amusement park.
He had promised to accompany her there.
She stayed up late planning the outing, spent over two hours on makeup, and waited in the cold wind for over two hours, only to receive his apologetic call.
Then she saw Jane’s post, hospitalized from illness, while he was busy tending to her.
Back then, they must have been secretly in love; she was just too slow to realize she was constantly the unchosen one.
When they reached the hotel entrance, a car was already waiting.
"Mom, I’ll catch a ride home myself."
Hannah wanted to say more, but Harry already ushered her into the car.
Once the car drove away, Vera tightened her coat, the cold wind seeped through, chilling her to the bone.
Perhaps when the wind blows, her heart will find tranquility.
Vera walked forward, her phone continuously buzzing, but her hands were too cold to bother answering.
After a few steps, her feet grew numb, the heels were too high, making it hard to walk; Vera bent to rub her feet but lost balance, falling forward.
A pair of warm hands from behind caught her securely.
