Chapter 40 - New Power(2)[Bonus]
[Task Completed]
"Yes! Finally!" Steve grinned, nearly bouncing onto his toes as he stared at the shimmering text floating before him.
He'd done it—well, almost. The system message confirmed it: one final requirement remained. He needed to hunt down five wild beasts to truly earn the skill.
"How hard could that be?" he muttered, brushing a hand through his tangled hair.
"This forest's probably crawling with bunnies, deers or literally anything..."
A confident smirk spread across his face.
"All I've gotta do is set some traps. Give it a bit of time, and boom—five wild beasts caught easy." He chuckled to himself, already imagining the success.
Fortunately, Steve wasn't entirely clueless. Back on Earth, he'd been dragged on enough camping trips to learn a few basic survival tricks.
Bunny traps were his specialty. Simple, silent, and surprisingly effective.
So that's what he did.
With practiced movements, he strolled through the mossy woods, gathering shrubs and twigs, occasionally reaching into his satchel for the rope he'd brought.
His traps were rudimentary but reliable: a noose of rope loosely covered with leaves, centered around a handful of tempting berries.
Once the unsuspecting creature stepped in for a bite, the loop would tighten, yanking it off the ground in a quick snap.
He set ten of them. Five wouldn't guarantee success, but ten? That doubled his odds.
Yes, it was plain thinking, but still, it was all his available tools to amount for him.
Satisfied, Steve plopped down beneath a nearby tree, its bark rough but comforting against his back. He let out a slow breath and closed his eyes.
That was the beauty of traps—you just had to wait.
Minutes stretched into hours.
Eventually, with the forest's quiet hum as his lullaby, Steve drifted off into a soft nap.
By the time he woke, the air had shifted. Cooler. Dimmer.
His eyes fluttered open, lips smacking as he groaned and sat up, blinking the blur from his vision.
Overhead, the sky had deepened into shades of orange and purple, the slight glow of the setting sun casting its warm glow on the surroundings.
"Evening already?" he murmured, rubbing his eyes.
"Guess I better check those traps."
He stretched his arms, cracked his neck, and set off.
As Steve wandered through the forest, retracing his steps to where the traps had been set, anticipation flickered in his chest—then quickly dimmed.
The first trap: untouched.
He moved on.
The second? Still armed. Not a single twig out of place.
Third... Fourth... Fifth—nothing. No snapped branches, no telltale rustle of leaves. Just silence.
A tightness began to coil in his stomach.
He picked up the pace, boots crunching against fallen leaves, eyes darting from shadow to shadow. This wasn't looking good—not at all.
Then, finally, at the seventh trap, he saw it.
Caught in the rope was... well, calling it a bunny would've been generous. It was a thin, scraggly creature—closer to a forest rat than anything else.
Steve stared, his thoughts clouded with a tad bit of rage and completely uncertainty.
"This... this is what I caught?" he muttered, as a muffled growl escaped his lips and following that, he swung his leg, kicking the trap.
"God damn it! Did I mess them up or something?!"
He paced, hands raking through his hair in frustration.
"This is so stupid! I need four more of these beasts. What am I supposed to do—wait all night? Damn it. I can't end today like this. I still have to complete my harem with Tonya, I gotta do that with a clear mind."
He sat back down, scowling at the ground.
"Should I head back to town?" he muttered, glancing up at the dimming sky.
"It's getting late, but..."
His words trailed off as his thoughts wandered, eyes narrowing with a flicker of amusement and mischief.
"I did want to snag that Harem Power before leaving. Still might have a shot with the Queen Witcher..." A sly grin tugged at his lips.
"And Tonya's booked for tomorrow—no way I'm missing that."
He gave a confident nod, as if sealing a pact with himself.
"Alright. I'll hang around a bit longer. Maybe some clueless beast'll bumble into one of the traps."
With that, he turned and began strolling back toward the path, hands casually tucked behind his head, his mind already drifting to the pleasures tomorrow promised. The thought alone sent a pleasant warmth curling through his chest.
But just then, as Steve took a single step forward—
Click.
The sound was quiet—barely a whisper beneath the rustle of leaves—but it sliced through the silence like a blade. His foot froze mid-air.
His breath caught in his throat.
Slowly, almost unwillingly, he turned his head. A primal sense of dread crawled up his spine.
Something was there.
Something massive.
Between the trees, the shadows seemed to shift—and then he saw it.
A dire wolf.
No... this wasn't just a dire wolf.
It was a monster.
Towering well beyond the size of any wolf he'd ever seen in picture books—or imagined—its hulking frame was wrapped in thick, matted fur that bristled like spears. Muscles rippled beneath its coat with every breath. Its eyes—a haunting, blood-red glow, burning with unblinking focus, locked straight onto him. Predatory. Calculating. Hungry.
Thick, jagged fangs jutted from its snarling maw, saliva stringing from them in long, glistening threads.
The air grew still.
Heavy.
Crushing.
Steve couldn't move.
He wanted to—his brain screamed at him to run, to scream, to do something—but his body refused.
His muscles were stone. His knees trembled. Every instinct howled that death was moments away.
Still, he couldn't bring himself to move even an inch.
'Wh-' he thought as the terror gripped him, raw and paralyzing.
'What... what the fuck is that?!'
