Chapter 99: 99 Aftermath.

Cain watched as Louise’s expression loosened and bloomed into a smile. He shrugged his shoulders, feeling a quiet happiness for her growth after the intense battle, not against her opponent, but with herself.

His gaze fell onto Louise’s shoulder, then shifted to her side ribs to where she was attacked. But the visible breath of relief she exhaled put his mind at ease.

The boy glanced at the other side, where the foxy senior lay on the floor, alone. Compared to that, Louise’s side was warm, filled with gentle laughter that soothed his ears.

He gritted his teeth, still wondering what the secret the foxy senior was holding was.

Because in the earlier spar, Cain’s eyes never blinked and kept close attention toward the boy’s gestures. But he found nothing suspicious, except that the boy was talkative even during the fight.

Cain didn’t know if that was one of his strategies, making his opponent lose their composure in exchange for his mediocre talent. Yet somehow, his face twisted in frustration, finding it hard to believe that mere talk was the only trick the senior had up his sleeve.

The doubt in his chest swelled, clouding his judgement for a moment.

"Can you stand?"

Rika’s soft voice snapped Cain out of his daze. His eyes widened in shock before shaking his head furiously to get rid of the negative in his mind. He glanced at his crew, watching as Rika wrapped her hand around Louise’s back, trying to help her stand.

"Yes."

Louise tensed her core muscles, then, with a helping hand from Rika, the two stood up. Abel and Peter walked closer, and the two hesitated at first before spreading their lips into a grip while raising their thumbs.

"Congratulations, Louise."

Abel’s cheerful voice dispelled the gloomy darkness from the brown-haired girl’s expression, a sign of her exhaustion. Peter exchanged glances with Louise, and the boy smiled.

"Congratulations. I’m glad to see you managed to overcome your fear."

Louise stared at the boy for several seconds. She nodded, her cheeks dyed in the shade of pink.

"...Um, thank you, Peter."

The four of them closed into a tight, celebratory huddle. Abel’s spirited congratulations overlapped with Peter’s calm praise, creating a warm, overlapping chorus that finally seemed to reach Louise’s exhausted heart.

Cain turned his gaze as a shadow fell over his group. It was Dosh, striding purposefully toward the unconscious senior. The man crouched, his hand pressing against the unconscious boy’s wrist, checking his pulse.

After ensuring the boy was fine, Dosh exhaled a short breath. He then stood up, turning his attention toward Cain’s group.

The two locked gaze for a moment before the boy shifted his attention toward his teammates, opening his mouth.

"Let’s continue this later. You guys go ahead to the cafeteria, I’ll be right behind you."

"Why?" Rika asked, her eyebrows furrowing.

Cain kept his mouth clamped, shrugging his shoulders. The red-haired girl exhaled deeply, then turned her gaze toward the other.

"Let’s go, everyone."

Hearing her words, the three others glanced back and forth at Cain and Rika before nodding. The four turned their backs, leaving Cain alone in the presence of many eyes watching him. A towering figure stood next to him, his eagle-like eyes staring at the four who walked away from the arena.

"What’s the matter, General?"

Dosh crossed his arms over his chest. He stayed silent for several seconds before speaking.

"What makes you act like this? Did you perhaps notice my restlessness, or something?"

Cain jabbed his thumb over his shoulder, toward the unconscious senior. He looked over his shoulder, the glint in his black eyes emitting a sharp aura that cut through the man’s mind.

"That boy over there messes with one of my comrades, that’s all."

A moment of silence descended around them. General Dosh stood like a statue, before her still expression cracked into a grin. The man slapped Cain’s shoulder with force enough to make his vision flicker at the edge of blacking out.

"Damn it, that hurts!"

Cain held his breath as he unknowingly let out curse words toward the man. He gulped, feeling cold sweat begin to drench his back.

"Is that so, sorry."

However, Dosh’s casual response made the boy lift his face to face him.

"What actually happened? Why did these seniors suddenly appear?"

"Well, long story short, they need help."

"Help?"

Cain tilted his head, prompting the general to begin to tell everything that had been informed to the man this early in the morning. The seniors were emissaries sent by the commander from the eastern border to recruit another batch of students to help distribute supplies on the battlefield.

Dosh was reluctant, of course, because most of the recent recruits were newbies who never even saw monster beasts, let alone experience battle.

He was furious, but the letter he received put him in a bind as Dosh couldn’t directly refuse an order from those above him.

"What’s your rank, general?"

Cain’s sudden question cut the general explanation as his eyes went wide. Then Dosh placed a hand on his chin, and a proud expression was plastered on his stern face.

"I’m one of the Marshalls."

"I see, then is there someone higher than you in terms of rank?"

The words that came out of Cain’s mouth made Dosh’s body flinch. The general lowered his hand while sighing in resignation.

"Yeah, there is a Supreme."

Dosh began to explain that a Supreme-rank soldier was the highest rank in the military a person could obtain. The rank was not only a symbol of authority and strength, but also a leader who could inspire those below him to follow his steps.

At this moment, there was only one Supreme-rank in Babilonia city, and the man happened to have a connection with Dosh in old times. The man raised his brows, then spoke to Cain in a friendly manner.

"We’re getting sidetracked. Thank you, Cain."

Cain furrowed his brows, unsure of the sudden gratitude he received. But when he saw the loosened expression on the man’s face, he swallowed back his words and spoke.

"General, you remember the debt you owe me, right?"

The general raised his brows, nodding.

"Yeah, what of it?"

"Good, let me make this brief."

Cain shifted his body and faced Dosh directly. He raised his left hand, showing the black screen of his smartwatch. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"I want to have access to any books in the library, not only in this facility, but the library in the capital centre itself. Can you do it?"

He wanted to ask for more, but the boy realized it would be asking too much. The boy locked eyes with the general’s hardened face. A moment of silence passed in the choking pressure until the man sighed in resignation.

"Alright, I promise you after all. Let’s exchange contact first, I will mail you the permit."

"Thank you."

Dosh waved his hand, as he didn’t need the flattery. After all, the man was still haunted by the nightmarish dream in which Cain’s group returned in the bag as a corpse.

The two exchanged contact information. Then, with a final nod, Cain bid farewell to follow his friends’ footsteps and fulfill his promise to senior Luna, who probably awaited him since earlier.

’I better hasten my pace.’
