Transmigrated as The Forgotten Extra-Chapter 100 Appointment.
Leaving the building, Cain’s feet stepped onto the hardened straight road, made of paved stones. His steps were light, a stark contrast to the weight of the morning’s events. The calm he now felt seemed almost surreal after the tension.
Looking back at what had just transpired, he felt stuck. Half a day hadn’t passed yet, but he felt days had passed by when facing those seniors. Sure, he and his comrades snatched a perfect victory, yet somehow it left a lingering bitterness in his mouth.
Cain halted his steps as a pleasant wind brushed against his skin, cooling down his heated thoughts. At this time, tension melted in his body, and the same could be said of his swirling thoughts.
He took a moment to inhale deeply, savouring the smell of dampened soil, coupled with rustling grass, soothed Cain’s heavy heart.
The boy’s eyes fluttered open, his black pupils stared vacantly at the artificial curtain above. A blue sky stretched beautifully into the horizon. Several clumps of white mist floated at a slow pace. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
When the wind stopped, he resumed his walk.
Alone in the vast area, Cain’s thoughts began to focus on the matter at hand, meeting with the senior Luna. If it were concerning her, the thing they would discuss must be gratitude and the current condition of her mother, whom he saved back then.
A thought crossed his mind as the boy’s step halted midway.
’What should I ask?’
Cain was no saint, but nor was he a fool who’d refuse a fair reward. The library access from Dosh was a good start. However, what else did he need?
Equipment?
Funds?
The thought felt grubby. Cain shook his head, getting rid of a tiny greed that almost sprouted from his chest. He resumed his stroll and not long after arrived at the building near his dormitories.
The device’s beep sound changed from a glaring red to green. The metal door hissed, exhaling a trapped wind inside, cold and making his skin crawl.
Cain strode forward, following the path he remembered. A straight path before turning left toward the cafeteria, the promised place.
It didn’t take long for him to arrive at the place as the door separating him slid to the side. The vast interior greeted him with a deafening silence, because the time for lunch was still not there yet.
’Where are they?’
He scanned the vast interior. Empty metal tables and chairs glittered under the lights, all vacant except for one corner. His pupils dilated, and he looked toward the far corner, where several people gathered around a large table; the atmosphere around them was thick with tension.
’Should I come later?’
Contrary to his expectation, a golden retriever glanced at his side as if noticing Cain’s presence. The boy’s golden eyes widened, then, before everyone’s eyes, he waved his hand high, gathering the others’ attention to him.
Feeling a bit complicated by Abel’s blind devotion. Cain parted his stiff lips, showing a cramped smile. He exhaled in resignation and approached the counter to have his usual meal, two packs of each chocolate and coffee jelly.
Cain dragged his feet toward the corner seat where everyone was waiting. A moment passed as he stood before the table, watching the people he knew sitting separated by generations.
His four comrades sat on his right, starting with the closest: Rika, Abel, Peter, and Louise. The table before them was a mess with several withered packs, a remnant of their feasts. On the other hand, his left side had only two people: senior Luna and her best friend, Chloe.
But was it only his imagination?
The grey-haired boy witnessed a rift between them. He looked sideways toward Rika. The girl was about to open her mouth when a loud slam jolted his attention toward the blue-haired girl, Chloe.
Chloe’s sharp, blue eyes simmered with a cold glint, akin to a sharpened dagger that had already taken down dozens of lives. And those eyes of hers were shot toward her little brother; his towering body seemed to be shrunk under her pressure.
"Listen well, Peter! Don’t you ever get involved with that bitch called Stella! I swear to god, nothing good will happen if you get closer to her."
"...Yes."
Peter’s voice was soft, trembling as if holding back tears. It was funny to think that the calm and responsible Peter could act like a little kid being scolded by his parents. It seemed Chloe’s discipline was ingrained deep in his bones, maybe even his soul.
"You’re a man, so speak louder!"
Chloe’s fist struck the table, letting out a thunderous roar that echoed in the empty room. The shock caused the bodies of Peter and the other three to flinch.
"Y-Yes!"
"You’re stammering."
"Yes."
Seeing the sight, Cain couldn’t help but chuckle. A soft, warm skin wrapped around his left arm, feeling a slight pull that attracted his attention. He raised his brows, finding senior Luna pointed toward another seat nearby.
The boy nodded and watched senior Luna stand up from her seat, catching everyone’s attention. But soon it shattered as Chloe began glaring at her little brother, forcing the boy to sit still.
Cain followed the trace of Luna’s swaying silver hair each time she walked. The girl stopped after passing several tables, then pulled one of the chairs.
"Please have a seat, Cain."
Her clear voice reverberated like a chime in the winter, cold yet carried a warmth from the first spring that brought life into the world. Cain’s body moved on its own as if her words contained a deadly, charming effect that made him obey. He pulled the chair and sat down.
Before Luna could open her mouth, Cain asked, his fingers resting on the jelly pack cap.
"How was your mother’s condition?"
The boy suppressed his tone. Having a relative whose body was infected by a virus must be hard to deal with. They must not let the news spread, because it will only plunge the neighbouring house into panic.
Not only that, but after visiting senior Luna’s house the other day. Cain concluded that she was a wealthy lady from a renowned family in the city, even though he didn’t know what that was.
He couldn’t imagine if the news spread that one of the people in her house was being infected, what kind of terror and threat would be thrown at the senior household for keeping the thing that should have been kept in isolation, alone and cold in that god-forsaken chamber.
Letting her mother’s body rot, then turned into a mindless monster before being eliminated.
Cain stared at senior Luna’s blue eyes; the trace of chill and the fortress that kept her emotions sealed were no longer there. In front of him, there was a little girl who was relieved from her burden and wanted to take her first step to face the future with renewed determination.
Luna looked downward, and a faint shade of pink invaded her beautiful, pale cheeks up to her ears. She pressed her lips together, curling her fingers into fists over her thighs.
The girl’s expression broke into a warm smile that blew Cain’s mind. She shyly nodded and flashed her white teeth.
"Yes, thanks to you."
Cain held his breath, momentarily mesmerized. He averted his gaze, feigning a calm he didn’t feel while his heart waged a frantic war against his ribs. The loud beating reached his ears, and Cain was afraid that senior Luna might hear it too.
’That level of beauty. Is she even a human?’
He regulated his breath, taking slow in and out. But it was meaningless.
"I’m glad." The words felt inadequate. He clicked his tongue internally, cursing his own awkwardness.
’What the hell are you doing, me? Why are you acting so high and mighty before senior Luna? Huff, gosh... this is embarrassing.’
A soft laugh came from the girl in front of him. Cain turned his attention to Luna, watching her raise a fist to cover her giggling.
"Fufufu, why are you so flustered?"
Cain’s thoughts freeze, knowing the girl could see her like an open book. He stayed for a few seconds before furiously shaking his head.
"N-Nothing, so what are you going to talk about?"
Again, senior Luna pressed her fist tight against her quivering lips. However, it didn’t hide the fact that her shoulders were twitching; she was holding back a laugh.
"Huff, I, pfft, I’m sorry. I’m not trying to ridicule you, it’s just, watching you getting flustered for no reason was so endearing. You are the one who started the topic yet decided to change it so swiftly."
Heat started to gather around Cain’s cheeks. He inhaled deeply, then spoke.
"Y-Yes, more importantly, what is it?"
Senior Luna exhaled a long breath. She tilted her head sideways, acting adorably to gauge Cain’s expression. But her facade was shattered as she began to laugh.
"Come on, senior."
"Pfft, ahaha, sorry, let me catch my breath first."
The girl patted her chest, then turned her gaze toward Cain. Her playful eyes changed into a deep focus. Luna and Cain stared into each other’s eyes, and she asked.
"Cain, do you mind if I borrow some of your time for me?"
