Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Where Did the Meat Come From?

"None of your damn business!"

Patrick Thorne didn’t even spare her a glance, picking up Tang Xiaonan to wash her face. Jacqueline Spann’s face flushed then paled, and her eyes reddened. Clayton Xavier frowned slightly; the Thorne family was unbearably crude. Jacqueline had greeted them politely, only to be met with insults. It was outrageous.

Jacqueline Spann grabbed Clayton Xavier, who was about to confront Patrick Thorne, and shook her head slightly. The Thorne family had an impeccable revolutionary background, and they were also brutish and unreasonable. She and Clayton Xavier were no match for them right now.

’But I won’t be down on my luck forever. Once I’m successful, I’ll make the Thorne family regret everything they’ve ever done.’

Clayton Xavier looked at her with pity. His earlier annoyance with the peddler had long since vanished, replaced by a deep sympathy for her.

"Patrick, you shouldn’t use such vulgar language," Tang Xiaonan said quietly to him after washing her face.

’Even though my opinion of Jacqueline Spann is changing, she was just saying hello. It was too harsh for Patrick to treat a girl that way.’

"I’m just using some vulgar language. Her family is the one that does vile things! You don’t understand, Xiaonan," Patrick Thorne said gruffly, his words dripping with contempt for the Spann family.

Goldie Thorne chimed in, "That whole family is nothing but thieves and whores. The men are crooks, and the women sell their bodies. Xiaonan, you stay far away from them. You don’t want to pick up their stench."

"Uncle, don’t say things like that in front of Xiaonan," Patrick Thorne said, clearly displeased.

Goldie Thorne slapped his own mouth and chuckled in annoyance. "My mistake, my mistake. I won’t say it again. Besides, it’s not like Xiaonan understands any of it."

The corner of Tang Xiaonan’s mouth twitched. ’Of course, the original owner of this body wouldn’t have understood such crude and vicious talk,’ she thought, ’but I understood every last word.’ 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

’Are Jacqueline Spann’s parents really that despicable?’

’The book never said anything about that. It only mentioned that her father, Vernon Spann, was a "sent-down youth" who had stayed behind. He was described as dashingly handsome but physically weak and unable to do heavy labor, so he was bullied often. He had no choice but to marry a local girl, Phoenix Golding, and become a quasi-resident of Millstone Peak. Only then did his life become a little easier.’

’Phoenix Golding was also quite pretty and a state-employed primary school teacher. The book did say she seemed to favor her son over her daughter and didn’t treat Jacqueline very well. But Phoenix Golding was supposedly very well-liked—much more so than Phoebe Huxley, at least.’

’The book never suggested Phoenix Golding had any moral failings, but Goldie and Patrick were speaking with such conviction. I don’t know who to believe.’

Jacqueline Spann had already walked some distance away, but she could still hear the loud voices of the uncle and nephew. Her face went pale, and she was forced to stop. As much as she wanted to ignore the whole sordid affair, she couldn’t pretend she hadn’t heard them when her parents’ reputations were at stake.

"Why do you have to be so nasty? My parents haven’t done anything to offend you, have they? We all live in the same village. Why must you be so aggressive?"

Even though she was furious, Jacqueline Spann maintained her soft-spoken demeanor. Her composure was truly impressive. Even Tang Xiaonan felt that her uncle and second brother had gone too far.

"You think that’s nasty? Then tell your mother to start acting with a little more decency! You all ate meat yesterday, didn’t you? Do you know where it came from? Your slut of a mother went looking for my father. She was one step away from dropping her pants and selling her body! Hmph! Go back and tell that vixen you call a mother that if she ever pesters my dad again, I’ll strip her naked and parade her through the village for everyone to see what a shameless tramp she is!"

Patrick Thorne was usually a quiet person, but his tongue was viciously sharp. His verbal assault left Jacqueline Spann completely speechless, a mixture of anger and indignation welling up inside her as tears filled her eyes.

"My mom bought that meat. Watch your mouth!"

The Spann family had indeed eaten meat the day before—they’d had wontons with shepherd’s purse. Phoenix Golding had been the one to bring the meat home. It was only a small strip, not even half a pound. Jacqueline Spann and her father hadn’t eaten much; they only had two or three wontons each. Phoenix Golding and her younger brother, Ulysses Spann, had eaten all the rest.
