Chapter 534: Chapter 533: Going South 3

Even if the frequencies for communication weren’t disrupted because of the sudden change after the apocalypse began, they probably still couldn’t use their phones after a week if there’s no one to maintain the cell towers for communication, especially after most of the electric lines were disrupted.

"Yes, that’s why we brought a lot of additional lithium batteries that have a longer lifespan and also additional solar panels if the cell towers are still lacking any of them.

Most of the cell towers in our country already have a lot of solar panels and lithium batteries; we are just going to add some if needed.

Since we need to conserve a lot of power, they’re just going to put the tower into sleeping mode after modifying and inputting the frequencies it would receive.

Afterwards, we have to warn all those bases that the communication is only for emergencies as well as important updates.

And they’ll probably speak to those bases—that whoever is nearby has to check the cell towers every now and then so that their communication signal won’t be lost."

"It’s just right that they should contribute. We’re already the ones working hard to set up proper communication lines, so they should also work a bit hard to maintain it."

Since the North Base had sent people to reopen communication for the bases, then those bases should also do their job in maintaining it.

"What about internal communication for those bases that we are going to visit—are we also going to take care of it?"

"No, we are only responsible for telling them about long-range communication between the bases.

As for the internal communication of those bases, they could also install their own as long as they have enough electric power to power up some small cell towers for themselves."

"Won’t they just use the cell towers for long-range communication?"

"No, the base just provided specific cell numbers that we would distribute together with the phones, so it would minimize those that wanted to use it just for themselves."

"That would indeed be better."

As for when they’ll be able to communicate as easily as before, it would probably depend on whether a lot of people become powerful enough to venture outside without any problems and if they managed to lessen all the problems outside.

However, all the things that they were dealing with were still getting stronger, so it would still probably take a long time for such a thing to happen.

Since Samuel and the others were busy, Richard and the others also set up a place for them to stay already, as they’ll spend the night around the cell tower because it would still take time for Samuel and the others to finish what they had to do, and it would probably be evening by then.

After talking to him, Treyton also stood up and used the metals that he had gathered on the road to build walls around the cell tower.

Afterwards, Treyton also called Mia to build earth walls after the metal walls that he made.

With the walls around it, at least the cell tower won’t be easily destroyed by things on the ground.

Of course, if birds decided to attack it, then it would still be destroyed; however, since there’s no food in the tower, it would probably be left alone.

So, they only set up walls around it to prevent more zombies from wandering inside and destroying what they had already set up.

And just as he thought before, Samuel and the others really only finished their work when it was already evening.

After they finished setting it up, they tried reaching the base again using it to check if it was working properly.

Fortunately, it was working properly, so they didn’t have anything to worry about any longer.

At nighttime, they didn’t encounter any attacks from zombies and mutant animals, so they were able to rest peacefully.

The next day, they started traveling early again, but Luciel still woke up late as he didn’t need to do anything.

When he woke up, the others were already killing a lot of zombies on the road as they were entering a more populated town.

"Are we already going to a base nearby?" Luciel asked while opening the food box that was left for him.

"Yes, we are going to the base that was reported by those who had already gone here for a mission before."

"I see. How many bases have been reported by other people before?"

"We are only sure of two bases: one small base and another medium-sized base," Treyton answered while still practicing his metal ability.

It seemed that Treyton had started practicing his abilities again because he didn’t have anything to be busy with aside from practicing his abilities again.

"How far are we from the base that was mentioned?"

"It would probably still take us an hour to get there, especially with the number of zombies around."

"I see, that would still be long enough."

"Are we going to another base?" Sophie asked curiously after hearing them. It seemed that they had been playing when Treyton held their meeting before, so the kids weren’t clear on where they were going.

"Yes, we are going to visit a lot of bases from now on," Luciel answered.

"We are going to see more people!" Sophie said. They had already learned what bases meant, so Sophie was indeed right, as they were going to meet a lot of people.

"Are those bases also like the North Base?" Ashlee also asked.

"Most of the bases that we would visit are probably smaller than the North Base, and we don’t know the people in those places.

So you guys won’t be able to go around those places freely. You kids will probably stay in our RVs most of the time," Luciel explained.

Most of those bases probably have poorer conditions than in the North Base, so it’s not really good for the kids to roam those places. The kids nodded, and Ashlee said, "We can still see a lot while staying inside."
