Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife-Chapter 228: "Don’t!"
Chapter 228: "Don’t!"
Ave pursed her lips as she approached him again. Though she didn’t know that werewolves were real, she’d read of how the ones with Alpha blood liked to take command and act mighty. She couldn’t help but also wonder why the prince was willingly giving her a ride on his back. When she came to stand by his side, wondering how on earth she was going to get on his back, she was lifted by someone from behind and placed swiftly on his back.
When she settled on his back with a startled gasp, she turned to see that it was Zane who had lifted her and placed her on the wolf’s back. She could see the worry in his grayish-hazel eyes even though he tried to look normal as he handed her a lamp and a robe. "For His Highness," he told her as he placed the robe on her lap and offered her a small bow of respect. "Good luck."
Before Ave could say anything to Zane, the double doors were opened, and Prince Kale had begun to walk into the dungeon. She turned to give Zane a reassuring smile before the door closed behind them with a loud bang, and along with the closed door, her heart rate quickened as she knew what awaited her at the end of this path.
She heard the wolf growl softly, and though she had no idea what he said or if he was even trying to communicate with her, she had a feeling he told her to hold on tight, and she instinctively grabbed his fur with one hand while clutching the lamp with her injured hand.
To Ave’s disbelief, that was exactly what he meant because he began to speed down the long path before she could prepare herself.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the end of the path. Prince Kale came to a stop at the end and bent down for her to get down.
Ave slid down his back and turned to bow curtly. "Thanks for the ride," she muttered, but he growled and glared at her before stepping back and going to stand in the shadows as if to tell her he would be waiting there. She didn’t know why she found the creature fascinating now rather than scary.
Nodding her head, she turned to the darkness behind her where the light of the lamp, just like the first time, wasn’t bright enough to illuminate the space. She readied herself and took a deep breath. She didn’t know what awaited her or if he would recognize her again before attacking. She had come here with no certain plan on how to help him stop his pains, but deep down, she had a feeling he needed her here and that there was something she could do to help him.
It was ridiculous or even stupid of her to come down here without a plan, knowing Lucian wasn’t in his right senses and anything could go wrong, and now that she was already here, she had no intentions of leaving without taking him out with her. She had faith in him that he would not harm her, but God help her, she couldn’t help the fear in her heart at the thought that what if he didn’t recognize her? She couldn’t help the nervousness that went through her nerves and made her legs feel wobbly as she slowly began to walk into the darkness in the direction he had attacked her when she first came.
Her injured arm still hurt, and the pain did nothing to ease her fear—what if he attacked her before recognizing her?
She could feel her sweaty palms as she clutched onto his robe, which Zane had given her, and the lamp. When she heard the soft rustling of his chains in the darkness, Ave’s legs immediately halted before she could will herself not to stop no matter what. It was just a small movement, yet it brought her heart to throb like it would burst out of her chest.
Swallowing her nervousness, she resumed walking forward with her lamp posed in front of her face where the golden light illuminated the glistening sweat on her forehead. She couldn’t help but feel like she was walking into a musty horror scene; her heart trembled with each step she took. Lucian, she thought desperately as she walked forward, please recognize me and don’t attack.
She had bragged about it in front of the royals. If he killed her before she helped him, that Princess Nina, who had insisted that only his mate could help him and that a mere human like her could do nothing for him but jeopardize things, would not only mock her death but have an easy pass to Lucian without her in the picture. Ave could never allow that to happen. This man was hers.
Ave walked for some time before she finally spotted him; however, nothing in this world had prepared her from the sight that welcomed her, and her legs stopped along with her heart for a moment. No words could describe the ache she felt in her heart for him and the deep affection and protectiveness that overwhelmed her and made her want to run forward and pull him into her embrace. Poor thing...
Emotions bubbled inside of her until she could hardly breathe, and tears pricked the back of her eyes as she stared at him.
He wasn’t in his other form but had shifted back to his human form, only that he was crouching in the far corner of the wall with his head down on his bended knees, his disheveled hair coming down around him. He was trembling slightly and wearing nothing. He looked so vulnerable and harmless she didn’t realize when she breathed out his name.
"Lucian..." she called out with an ache in her voice that mirrored her mixed emotions. She was taken aback when she saw him shift and then slowly raise his head to look towards her. Though he looked to be in a weakened state, the eyes that stared back at her from within the disheveled strands of hair hanging over his face burned with a dangerous intensity, like flames rising from the depths of hell. For a moment, as he stared at her, she couldn’t help but think that he didn’t recognize her—his gaze was wild, cold, and unyieldingly dark with an inhuman bloodlust that sent cold shivers crawling down her spine.
From the look in his eyes, Ave knew from instinct that she had to make him recognize her before she would dare approach him. She wanted to heal him; that was the only way she knew to help him now. He had healed once from having her blood, and she recalled how he’d once requested to bite her to draw blood as compensation for that night he didn’t take advantage of her. She didn’t know why she believed if she gave him her blood, it might help, but she wanted to try. He wanted her blood, and she would give it to him now.
However, with that plan set, she wasn’t certain if she could walk up to him with the way he was looking at her like she was a walking food. He looked like a starved beast watching, monitoring his prey before he would attack when she would least expect him to. His predatory eyes didn’t even blink for a second and kept their intense gaze fixed on her.
Ave didn’t want to fear him, but the way he was staring at her was causing alarm bells to go off in her brain. She felt the urge to turn on her heels and flee for her life because his eyes had no signs of the warmth and tenderness they used to hold when he looked at her. It was like he wasn’t that loving, caring husband she had come to love with all of her heart and would do anything for. He didn’t look at her like she was even a person he knew but more like someone he would rip apart for daring to disturb him.
She heard him let out a throaty growl as dark fur suddenly appeared and disappeared from his arms, and then, to her utter horror, he suddenly leaped from his crouching position and was standing right in front of her. Before she could do anything, he’d grabbed her neck and lifted her off her feet. The lamp and robe fell away from her hands as she felt the breath leaving her lungs. Her eyes turned teary as she stared at his savage ones burning up at her.
Ave knew she should fight him and try to get away like when he would strangle her in the past, and she would scratch and kick until he would release her, but she didn’t. Instead, she managed a smile as she shakily raised her hand, reaching out to touch his face, and choked out, "You don’t... want to kill me... Lucian... you... don’t... It’s me, Aveline..." She managed to say as she felt the pressure increasing in his hold around her neck and, at the same time, saw long fangs emerge from his lips.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she realized he was adding pressure to her neck while shaking his head, as if fighting for stability against the darkness within him. He was going to break her neck and kill her before he gained control of himself, she realized, as the pressure didn’t loosen. She should fight, but Ave didn’t.
Her tears slid down her cheeks, and a drop fell on his hand, and she watched him blink for the first time. Before she knew it, he released her and stepped away from her.
Ave fell to the ground, coughing and rubbing her neck as she tried to catch her breath and breathe in as much air as possible into her lungs. She heard the sound of his chains and slowly looked up to see him staggering away from her like a drunken man. The lamp’s light was so faint she could barely see him as he moved into the darkness.
She grabbed the lamp and began to go after him, but his voice halted her. "DON’T!" he growled loudly.
"Go back, don’t come near... please," he pleaded with a shake in his voice. He retreated more into the darkness as if to get away from her. "I don’t want to hurt you...ugh... go away!" he yelled out as he groaned in pain.
Ave could tell he had finally recognized her, but it wouldn’t be for long with how she could hear him groaning in pain and the frantic rustling of his chains.
"Lucian, I... I can take your pain away if you let me," Ave told him as she dropped the lamp and walked into the darkness where he was crouching down in the corner, yanking at his hair and groaning. She didn’t even hesitate to reach out to him this time around. She went on her knees and grabbed his hands that were yanking at his hair like he would rip his hair off his head.
"Oh, love. You’re hurting yourself!" she cried out as she cradled his haggard face in her palms, but he tried to weakly get away from her, only that the wall was behind him, and he had nowhere to move unless he pushed her away and got up. But that, Lucian couldn’t do when he was faintly aware of who she was now.
He was barely conscious, and he fought for control before he would end up harming or hurting her, or worse... killing her unintentionally. He had killed three people for the days he had been here, and their remains still lay in the darkness around him. He could smell them. He had enjoyed killing them, and Talinor had purposely sent them for him to kill to quench a little of his bloodlust. He didn’t know why the hell they had allowed his wife to come to him in this state, and before he would be consumed by the instinct to kill and drink the blood of his victims that brought his heart pleasure and immense enjoyment, he would send her away from here.
"Aveline, go back. Leave..." he gritted through clenched teeth as he tried to move his head away from her gentle hands, but she refused to let go as she shook her head.
"I am not leaving without you," she said stubbornly as she used her hands to move the hair falling all over his face away. "Let me help you," she whispered.
"You can’t... no one can. You should go away," Lucian pleaded desperately as he fought the darkness threatening to take control of him. Once he allowed that darkness to take over, he would no longer be in control, nor would he recognize her. "Aveline, for the love you have for me, go before I hurt you. Please." He pushed at her this time, but the moment she fell back, she came at him again and hugged his head to her chest this time around.
"No. I am not leaving no matter what you do or say. If you wanted to kill me, you would have when you strangled me, and since you didn’t, I believe you wouldn’t again," she whispered as she hugged his head to her breasts. He was struggling to get away, but it seemed he had been weakened from all his night of suffering that he was reduced to this state where he couldn’t even fight her grip. He tried to pry her hands from around him, and when he couldn’t, he growled inhumanly to scare her away and bared his fangs at her. But due to the dimness, Ave couldn’t see the fangs, and his growl was doing nothing to scare her because now she believed he wasn’t going to hurt her again after he’d recognized her.
