Chapter 230: Taken too much

"You have nothing to be afraid of, my love. Nothing will happen to me. I am not that weak," she whispered as she leaned down and tenderly pressed her lips against his shoulder blade and then continued to stroke his hair.

Her tenderness and the endearment she used were almost his undoing. "Please, Aveline. Stop me and go away..." he begged her at the same time he licked the cut on her neck that was bleeding again. He hoped, for her own sake, not his, that she would stop him now, but instead of stopping him, his wife gave him more access to her neck as she hugged him to her body even more. There was something about her that always awakened something in him, and just like always, she awakened the deep hunger in him with her encouraging strokes on his hair and back.

Even if Lucian wanted to stop himself now, it was too late because something inside him suddenly snapped, and he didn’t realize when he roughly grabbed her, brought her onto his lap, and buried his head into her neck. Without any more hesitation, he sank his fangs into her tender skin. She gasped and jolted in pain, but Lucian was too far gone to even seem to care about her comfort. All he could think about was having her blood. His brain was fogged with his hunger. His desire to quench his thirst overshadowed any other thoughts in his mind.

When he bit into her skin at first, Ave’s first reaction was to cry out and push him away because of the pain, but then she bit back her cry. Instead of pushing him away when he squeezed her in his arms as he sucked her blood, she hugged his head to her and allowed him to take as much as he wanted. She heard him let out throaty groans that sounded so inhuman and beastlike as he took her blood. She should be afraid, but her fears were overwhelmed by her love for him. It was in this moment that she realized how much her love for him was and that she was willing to risk anything for his sake.

Blurry memories that didn’t belong to Ave suddenly began to flash through her mind. She saw a night creature hover above her before he sank his dark fangs into her neck. She thrashed and tried to get away from him, but he didn’t let her go. Ave tried to make sense of the memories, but they disappeared as quickly as they came when she felt Lucian bite down into another part of her neck and continue to suck her blood. The more he sucked, the more his arms tightened unbearably around her body and squeezed her.

Ave didn’t know for how long he kept taking her blood, and she silently kept encouraging him with her hand stroking his hair and back, but she suddenly began to feel lightheaded and faint. Black dots began to appear in her vision.

"Lucian..." she muttered his name as it seemed he was taking too much. It was time she stopped him, or he might drink her dry and squeeze the life out of her with his tight grip around her. She called his name again, and when he didn’t react, she realized he was lost, gone, and she needed to bring him back to reality somehow.

"Baby, I think... that’s enough for now..." she managed to whisper in his ear softly, and though he stiffened as if he’d heard her, his fangs didn’t move out of her skin. He kept on sucking like he had no control over his own body.

"Baby..." she whispered softly again; however, this time around, her voice came out a bit faint and weak. Even the hand she was using to stroke his hair and back fell away slowly from him.

Lucian, who was lost in his world of bliss from the taste of her sweet blood, heard her call his name, but he couldn’t bring himself to pull away, even though that was exactly what he wanted to do when she called him baby. He wanted to pull away, but something inside him kept him from doing so. He could hear the demonic voice whispering for him to keep drinking since she’d offered it to him. If she were to die, it wasn’t his fault. He’d warned her of the danger, and yet she’d tempted him into tasting something so deliciously forbidden.

The voice was so loud it made it impossible for him to hear the other voice telling him he was taking too much. She would die if he didn’t stop. He was going to kill his wife if he didn’t pull away—his baby, his sweet, beautiful woman who had so fearlessly come back to him despite knowing the danger, who had offered her blood to take away his suffering. She was the love of his life, the apple of his eyes, and that very lovely wife of his had gone limp in his arms.

It didn’t take long before the voice reminding him of his wife overshadowed the one encouraging him to keep drinking her blood until the very last drop. The fog in his brain slowly began to clear away along with the deep thirst in his throat, even the dark presence inside him began to fade away like wind. And as everything cleared and he slowly began to get a hold of himself, so did he realize the woman in his arms had gone limp and still.

Lucian paused his sucking of her blood immediately, and his hold around her loosened as the realization that he’d gone too far dawned on him. He went rigid as a rock as she fell limply over his shoulder. He dared not move because he feared if he did, he would see that he’d taken her life. The fear that gripped his heart and mind was too much for him to comprehend whether she was still breathing or not. He dared not check, he dared not move, for he feared he might go mad if he confirmed he’d indeed taken her life.

What had he done? That thought was the first that came to his mind as he felt no movement from her.

"My love?" he called softly as he willed himself to grab her shoulders and check. She fell loosely away from his shoulder as he moved her, and her hair poured over her pale face. Lucian could feel his heart and throat constricting as he gently and slowly moved her hair away from her face. Her eyes were closed, and her delicate lashes rested over her cheeks. Her pale lips were parted slightly.

"Aveline?" He shook her shoulders, and when she didn’t move, he would have gone crazy had he not belatedly taken note of her faint heartbeat. The relief that washed over Lucian was so intense he couldn’t comprehend why, after his relief, came anger. He was angry at himself for losing control, so was he angry at those who had allowed her in here to come to him.

Without the thought of needing a key, he cut off the chains around his wrist and ankles. He then pulled her into his embrace and hugged her to his chest as he apologized to her repeatedly.

Her blood had worked. He could feel himself now without the other dark presence. However, that didn’t make him one bit happy because he had taken so much from her, and without hesitation, he got up and draped the robe she had brought with her around his body and gently gathered her up into his arms in a protective embrace.

Without even turning, he commanded in a low, lethal tone, "When I take her from here, there had better be the best doctor waiting in our chambers, or I swear, every one of you will suffer for disobeying my orders to keep her out of the dungeon." His voice cut through the air like a blade as he directed the threat toward Prince Kale, who was hiding in the shadows waiting for Ave. But Lucian’s words brought him to his feet.

Prince Kale was the first to go out in a flash of speed to arrange for the doctor before Lucian would come out. And when he first emerged from the dungeon doors without Ave, the people standing outside all looked at him in confusion as he came out alone with an air of urgency around him. Had the beast gone rampant and killed the stubborn woman in there? Most of the royals wondered as they watched Kale turn back to his human form and take a robe from his brother to wear.

Zane was the first to walk up to the prince and demand, "Where is the lady? Why isn’t she with you?" There was panic in his voice as he asked those questions. But before Prince Kale could reply, the air suddenly turned chillingly rigid and suffocatingly ominous. It was like an invisible force was sucking all the pure air in the atmosphere, making it hard for them to breathe. At first, it was the sound of heavy footsteps they heard that made them all look towards the direction of the door. They froze when they noticed the prince walking out with a dark, hardened face and a burning gaze like flames as he carried his wife in his arms like the most precious jewel in the world.

She was alive, the werewolves with sharp senses realized when they all heard her faint heartbeat. How could she be alive when she was nothing but a mere human? They had all stood here waiting to see Kale walk out with her ripped body, but none of them had expected the prince to come out when there were still days to come before his curse torment would end. How was it possible that a mere human girl had suspended his punishment?

Even before Lucian opened his mouth to speak, Zane could tell he was back to normal; however, he was enraged. He could see it in his eyes, in the air around him. The princess had succeeded in healing him, but how was that possible? Then he noticed her in his arms, leaning her head limply against his shoulder, pale and unmoving. Oh no, had he killed her?! Was that why he looked murderously angry?!

Zane hurriedly moved to speak to the prince, but Lucian brushed past him in long, purposeful strides without a word to any of the brothers at the door of the dungeon, nor did he say a word to Zane, who went after him, walking at a distance behind him. frёewebηovel.cѳm

It was when he walked past them that the werewolf princes could finally breathe properly, and then Prince Kale snapped back to his senses as he cursed, "Damn, we need to get the doctor before he walks into his chamber!"

The two brothers who had been waiting at the door as the king had gone back to his chamber, turned to stare at him in confusion; however, he didn’t explain and ran past them. They exchanged looks and shrugged casually as if whatever this was was none of their business now that the prince was fine and she had miraculously brought him out as she’d said she would. This was unheard of.

Though their elder brother had warned them all to show their respect to Prince Lucian because the ancestor of his kind in ancient times had ruled the werewolf world before everything came crumbling down after a curse was placed on him, he was far too superior to them when it came to power and authority. But then, since they could all pick up a faint heartbeat in his human wife and he had walked past them without a word, they had assumed there was no big deal and that the prince held nothing against them for allowing her to go in there when he’d told their king to keep her away from him in his condition.

Only the devils know how she had managed to save him from the torment of his curse in this season. They exchanged looks and were about to turn away; however, none of them were prepared for Lucian’s enraged outburst after he walked to his chamber without a word to anybody and realized they had not brought a doctor for his wife.
