Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife-Chapter 232: Remorseful
Chapter 232: Remorseful
Lucian reached the side of Ave’s bed and stopped. He had looked forward to when she’d regain consciousness and had imagined many times how he’d first react. He’d imagined himself hugging and kissing her and vowing to protect her from ever being in danger, but now that she was awake, staring up at him with teary blue eyes and a bitter smile on her pale face, Lucian dared not move forward. She had tears in her eyes—did she blame him for putting her in this condition? Was she angry at him for not being able to stop drinking from her even though she’d trusted him with all her heart days ago?
She had faith in him and kept reassuring him that he wasn’t going to hurt her, but in the end, he’d ended up doing worse than hurting her; he’d almost killed her.
Would she ever find it in her heart to forgive him for almost taking her life? Lucian felt his throat constrict and his eyes burn as he stared at her face and the tears that rolled down her pale cheeks. He wanted to reach out and wipe the tears away, kiss her with all the gratitude in his heart, and tell her how much he’d missed her, but he did none of that because he feared she’d move away from him. He had endangered her life.
The people in the room who’d all turned in surprise at Lucian’s change of direction had not realized she was awake until they followed him with their eyes towards her bed, and when they saw her open eyes and how she stared at only Lucian, they couldn’t believe their eyes. She was finally awake!
Isolde and Celeste broke out in tears as they saw her open eyes. The twins held each other’s hands as they waited for Lucian to do whatever he wanted to do so they could go forward and greet her. They’d all missed her so much. But Lucian neither touched nor said anything, neither did he move back so they could go forward. He just stared down at her with his hands clenched at his sides. So much for his outrage of wanting her to wake up, and yet now that she was awake, he didn’t say a word.
Lucian stared down at her without moving. She’d lost too much weight and looked more tiny on the bed; the white chemise she wore gave her a ghostly appearance with no color on her face. Her hair was a tangled mess and oily from not being washed, but to Lucian, she was the most beautiful angel he’d ever set eyes on. He’d never desire her less even though she was in this state. He felt the back of his eyes prick with tears. He couldn’t recall the last time he’d ever let himself shed a tear for anything, but his relief and happiness that she was finally awake almost brought him to the brink of tears. He could feel it, and they gathered in his amber eyes, blurring his vision of her slightly.
Unable to control his emotions, Lucian decided to leave and go get a doctor to treat her well until she was more stabilized before he’d come back. His guilt and remorse for putting her in this condition wouldn’t allow him to speak or do anything now. But the moment he attempted to turn on his heels, Ave frowned before she parted her dry lips and croaked out,
"Hello..." with a faint smile on her face. She almost couldn’t believe her handsome husband could look even more handsome in his haggard state, where the clothes he wore were wrinkled and in a bad state, just like him.
She opened her arms on the bed as if beckoning him to come forward. At first, he hesitated because he didn’t want to upset her when she’d just woken up and was probably so weak, but when she called out his name with a longing in her voice that didn’t go unnoticed, he lost the battle against not going to her.
In two long strides, Lucian had reached the bed and leaned into the arms she opened for him. They closed around his large frame when he was at her reach, and she hugged him to her chest while she cried out with a hoarse voice, "I thought I’d never see you again," as if she knew exactly his thoughts.
Ave held him tightly to her like she feared if she were to let go for just a minute, everything would disappear. She could tell he was afraid of losing her just as much as she was of losing him because he held her tightly and crushed himself against her without a care in the world for his siblings watching from behind with dumbstruck expressions on their faces as they’d never thought their ever-so-irrational, scary brother was capable of showing such vulnerability. He carried himself so high that they thought he was incapable of feelings like a normal human, but now they watched him lay his head on Ave’s chest like a baby as they held each other.
The siblings exchanged awkward glances with each other. Only Zane, who was used to this, was unmoved by the prince’s strange behavior when he had just been destroying things a moment ago and now was all over his wife.
Ave had believed for a moment when she first woke up that she didn’t wake up in this time. She had been scared to death at those thoughts, and then when she finally noticed all the people in the room and how her husband was traumatizing them for her sake, no words could describe the feeling in her heart. It was like being away in a strange land and finally coming back to your home, your comfort zone, because these people were now her home, especially her husband.
When he walked up to her and she saw his exhausted, handsome face in front of her, she hadn’t been able to hold back her tears of joy. Reading his expression in her emotional state wasn’t easy, but she saw remorse and how much he blamed himself for her condition in his eyes. She couldn’t believe he had the audacity to want to walk away from her when she was dying to hug him and show him just how much she missed him.
Ave felt him snuggled his head against her chest as he inhaled her scent and then held her tightly. "You scared the hell out of me, my love. You scared me to near death," he chanted as he plastered kisses on her face when he moved his head away from her chest to look at her face.
Ave reached out her hands and cupped his cheeks in her palms as he stared down at her. He looked like someone who hadn’t slept for ages, with visible dark circles under his eyes; even his hair seemed like it hadn’t met a comb for a long time. She brushed her fingers into his tangled hair as she stared up at his burning eyes with quivering lips.
Without hesitation, he leaned down and covered her quivering lips with his. It wasn’t a long kiss, but in it, she felt his love and relief. In it, she knew he was her home, and she would do her best to never part with him and stand by him, even if it was the last thing she did.
"I missed you so much, Baby. So damn much," he whispered huskily against her lips after his kiss, and Ave smiled as she stroked his cheek. She wanted to speak, but her eyes trailed off to the people standing in the back looking at them in disbelief with flushed cheeks. She could tell the twins wanted to also come to her, but they hesitated because of Lucian, who had dominated her bed with his presence.
Ave pushed slightly at his chest, but Lucian frowned and reached out to delicately hold her wrists and looked down at her. "What’s wrong? Are you feeling pain anywhere in your body?" he asked in concern as he began to inspect her body, and when his eyes fell on her arm where he’d injured her, his eyes looked pained and remorseful. Though the wound had begun to heal, the scar it was leaving behind seemed to be an obvious one that she’d have to carry around with her. He couldn’t help the tug of guilt in his heart as he stared at the wound, knowing he had caused that without his knowledge.
Noticing how he stared at her arm, Ave could tell he was feeling remorseful again. She pursed her lips and managed to speak, "I’m thirsty. I want water," she told him to distract him from dwelling on a wound that she didn’t care less about. Her throat was dry, and she wanted nothing but to have water.
Lucian hurriedly moved away and turned to order, "Get her some water!" There was no maid in the room but his siblings and the king, whom they had been arguing with before Ave woke up. When he barked the order, Talinor turned to look towards the siblings, who looked like they weren’t the ones the prince had just ordered to get water for his wife.
The Pendragon siblings heard him clearly. The reason they didn’t move to do as he’d said was because they were not used to being ordered to get anything, and most importantly, they were more than three in the room, and Lucian had just barked the order without mentioning a name. Thus, no one wanted to take the responsibility of getting the water. Who wanted to walk all that long way to find the water pot?
"You have no reason to be with our Selene, brother Orion. We haven’t gotten the chance to greet her yet. You should go and get the water before brother Lucian gets angry," said Isolde, who had missed her best friend slash sister-in-law for days now that she wasn’t around to be with them in this strange kingdom, where they treated them like little kids and would like to be around her as much as possible now that she had finally regained consciousness.
Orion scoffed as he glared down at his younger sister, "You’ve got the nerves to send me when you are the youngest. Go and get the water; Evangeline is your friend, not mine. I’m only here for brother Lucian."
"Don’t look at me," Celeste grumbled when Orion turned to her as if telling her to go since her twin wasn’t going. "I want to stay here with Selene. She needs us by her side more than she needs you, and besides, it’s not my name he called when he ordered."
"Can’t someone just get my wife the damn water until I call a name!" Lucian gritted in irritation when his siblings began to argue about him not mentioning their name, and though their argument brought a smile to Ave’s face, she began to cough dryly while trying to smile at the same time, and that made Lucian lose his patience. He turned to send a dark glare in their direction.
Zane sighed heavily. Unable to take another moment of the siblings’ argument, he walked out of the room to go and get the damn water that had started the heated argument among the royal siblings.
Not long after, he returned with a jug and a cup of water on a tray and walked up to the prince and handed it to him. One would think, with how the siblings were arguing, the water was that far away from the room. It was literally just a few steps from the chamber!
