Chapter 237: Unexpected attack

The next morning, a commotion outside their chambers woke them up before they rose from bed. Ave was the first to open her eyes at the voices coming from outside, and from how Lucian didn’t move and was still holding her waist with his leg over hers, she could tell he was in a deep sleep. However, when she attempted to move away from him, his eyes flew open at the same time the door to their room was busted open by none other than Prince Aaron, who was being followed closely by maids trying to stop him. His expression was that of raw rage as he barged in, and before any of them could wonder what on earth he was doing here, he’d gone to attack Lucian, who was getting out of the bed.

His blow caught Lucian off guard. Before he could stop it, it hit him squarely on the nose, and his head jerked forcefully to the side, causing Ave to rise quickly to her feet in shocked disbelief at the morning attack by the prince, who had no reason to be there.

"Aaron, what the hell?!" she exclaimed angrily as she moved hurriedly to her husband’s side, but because she stood up in a hurry, she felt a wave of dizziness wash over her and made her vision darken for a moment. Lucian caught her waist before she lost her balance and brought her to his chest as his murderous eyes met Aaron’s savage, angry ones.

"How dare you hurt my girl?!" Ave heard Aaron grit through clenched teeth as he moved forward, whether to attack or grab her, as she felt his eyes on her. But the moment he came forward, Lucian was fast to send him falling back with a leg kick while still holding onto her waist. He helped her sit back on the bed and turned to meet Aaron, who had recovered in a second from the kick and came at him with a dagger this time.

Ave’s eyes widened at the sight of the dagger he clutched in his hand. Before she could intervene, Aaron moved fast with inhuman speed, grabbed Lucian by the neck with one hand, and used the other hand to press the dagger to his throat.

"I will cut you limb by limb for the pain you put her through!" Aaron snarled with a darkened look in his eyes that made him look so dangerous Ave knew he meant what he said.

"Your Highness, what’s the meaning of this? Let go of him!" she yelled as she got up to her feet, but Lucian held up his hand for her to stay back and told her he would handle this. Though a dagger was held to his throat, he looked calm and yet angry at the same time. She could see an angry vein throbbing on his forehead, and before she could do anything, the two got into a heated fight that made her quickly step back. They threw fists and kicked at each other. They fell into tables, broke things, destroyed the vanity table, and shattered the mirror.

"You bastard!" Lucian cursed darkly as Aaron cut his arm with his dagger. Lucian hissed before he used a piece of glass that had broken on the floor to stab him back on the shoulder. "My wife belongs to me alone! She is mine and mine alone! I’ll kill you before you think you can dare to call her your girl again!"

Ave almost lost her voice with how much she was screaming and begging them to stop fighting. The sight of them both covered in blood made her heart twist into knots. She didn’t know who to support because, for some reason, her heart went out to the two men. She couldn’t watch either of them get hurt, and she hated that she was feeling that same familiar feeling whenever it concerned Aaron. Her heart called out to him, and yet she hated that he was fighting her husband.

People gathered at the entrance of the room, but nobody made any attempt to stop them and instead watched in amusement as the two fought, being at each other’s throats. It wasn’t until Zane and Prince Orion arrived at the scene that the two men were restrained. Zane held Lucian, while Orion, who held Aaron, was not strong enough to keep him back because Aaron slipped away from his grip and went at Lucian again.

This time, Ave couldn’t stand it anymore. When Aaron grabbed a piece of glass and went for Lucian, she acted impulsively, grabbed a piece of the broken table with a sharp edge, stepped in the middle before they could start fighting again, and held it out to Aaron’s throat.

"If you so much as hurt him again, I’ll ram this deep into your throat!" she yelled furiously as she glared at the prince, whose face quickly changed from rage to hurt at her words. He stared at her as he clutched the piece of glass he held into his palm until he began to bleed. But his expression showed no sense of the hurt he was causing himself—only the emotional, raw pain at her words. The sight of his bleeding hand made Ave’s hands tremble, but she kept her ground in front of Lucian, who had looked ready to fight again but stopped when she stepped in front of him.

"You’re hurting yourself..." Ave cried out as she stared at his hand. She didn’t know why the sight of it tore at her heart and made her want to reach out and stop the bleeding, but she tried to hold her ground and not follow her instinct to go forward and yank the glass away from his tight grip. He had been the one to barge into their room and attack her husband. She had no reason to rush to him because he was hurting himself. But why couldn’t she bear to watch him in pain?

Ave dropped the sharp wood she held out to him before she could stop herself. She was about to rush to Aaron when she felt Lucian’s strong, protective arm snake around her waist from behind and pull her back to his solid chest. She didn’t have to turn to know that he wasn’t pleased with how she attempted to get away from his grip to help the other man from hurting himself.

"Who are you?" she heard Lucian’s hoarse, deep voice from behind as he directed the question to Aaron while his grip tightened around her.

Lucian didn’t like that Ave was worried about the other man who had attacked him. She was his wife, and though she had stood up for him, the fact that she was staring worriedly at Aaron’s hand tore at his very heart. He had known since the day Aaron had told him to take Ave away from the Imperial Palace and away from the Empress that the prince wasn’t who he claimed he was. He knew Ave had killed his sister, and yet he tried to hide it and protect her. He had suspected he was hiding something, but he’d never expected him to travel all the way from Banzai and come here to fight Lucian because he’d heard, from who knows where, that Lucian had almost taken Ave’s life when he took her blood that night. He even dared to call her his girl!

Nobody, Lucian thought with a possessive grip around his wife and a murderous glare at Aaron, could take her from him. Whatever relationship Aaron might have with Ave in his twisted mind, or in a past life, Lucian would never let her go or allow the bastard to come between them. If Aaron doesn’t want to die mysteriously, he’d better not dare to call her his girl again.

Prince Aaron’s eyes locked with Lucian’s as they glared at each other. He didn’t answer his question and instead said, "I thought leaving her with you, you’d protect her. I thought she would be safe with you, but what did you do in the end?" he snarled in resentment. "You almost killed her for me!" he gritted furiously.

Ave couldn’t help but frown at his words. One, she didn’t know how Aaron knew they were here or how he knew she had almost lost her life, and second, she had no idea what made him think he had the right to come and fight her Lucian for it. She might have acted on instinct to his wound and the feeling of not wanting him to get hurt, but she wasn’t going to stand and watch him add to Lucian’s guilt about how he’d almost taken her life.

"Excuse you, Sir." Ave scoffed as she sized him up. "I don’t know who you are, and I don’t remember since when you and I have any relationship that made you think you have the right to call me yours." She told him in case he had misunderstood her friendship then for anything. He had once told her that they knew each other a long time ago. She had no memories of it, which meant he must be referring to Selene, and if he had done this because he thought of her as Selene, she needed to set him straight on a few things.

"I am married to Lucian, and if you and I might have something in the past, which I have no memories of, I want you to know that I don’t appreciate you meddling in my personal life. You..." Ave trailed off when she met his eyes. What she saw in them made her unable to complete her words. There was a raw look of pain and hurt with longing as he stared at her. He smiled bitterly at her, a bitter look that turned her stomach and made her heart tremble.

"Who would have thought the little girl I once used to protect and give everything to would now choose her husband over me? There was a time you’d tell me that you’d never love any man like you loved me," Aaron said as he laughed softly, his hardened eyes softening as he continued. "But I guess you’ve grown up, and the time we spent apart must have made you love your husband more than me—the same husband who almost killed you," he said the last part with a dark murderous glare at Lucian.

A frown settled between Lucian’s brows.

Ave couldn’t help but get confused by his words. "Who are you?" she questioned, as his words made her not understand how he was related to her.

Everyone who had gathered at the entrance of the room, especially the Pendragon Princesses, couldn’t help their confusion as well. How did Prince Aaron and Ave know each other? And how dare he fight their brother like he had the right to their sister-in-law?

"Tell them all to leave us alone if you want to know the answer to your question," Aaron said with an indifferent voice, his words directed at Lucian.

Though Lucian didn’t like the prince, he wanted to know what gave him the right to think he could claim his wife as his girl. He turned to look at Zane.

Zane understood what he meant even without him saying a word. He grabbed Prince Orion and gestured for the servants and the Pendragon Princesses gathered at the door to move back before he closed the door and stood guard outside it.

Only the three remained in the room, and the moment the door closed, Ave asked again, "Can you tell us who you are now? Why do I feel like I know you from somewhere?"

"Because you do, Rose," Aaron replied with a smile playing on his lips, and before Lucian could warn him to watch the names he used to address his wife, Prince Aaron had snapped his fingers, and immediately, his appearance began to change.

The couple watched in astonishment as the black-haired, black-eyed prince changed into a completely different man. His black neck-length hair turned to reddish-brown curly hair, and his black eyes turned into blue. He became even more handsome, and his features... his features... Lucian had to blink twice to see if he was seeing things or if the man standing before him indeed looked somewhat like his wife.

"It’s me, Rylan." Aaron smiled with his blue eyes filling up with tears. "You remember, don’t you?" he asked when he saw the dumbfounded look in her eyes.
