Chapter 247: Practice

Someone brought the bow and arrow for Lucian, and Ave reached out excitedly to take it from him, but her husband scowled down at the weapon as he held it up from her reach. She frowned as she glanced at his face in question.

"This bow is too big for your hands," he muttered in displeasure as he ordered for a smaller one to be brought. He didn’t want to risk her hurting herself in the process of him trying to find something to distract her from her worries. Though Zane had told him how good she was with her target in the days she was unconscious and he asked about what she’d done in his absence, he didn’t want to risk seeing her hurt. Yes, call him overprotective and all, she was his wife and his life, and not a cut on her would be obtained in his presence.

However, Ave didn’t like the smaller bow brought for her. She refused to take it from him when he carefully handed it to her; instead, she pursed her lips and glared up at him. The last time she had practiced, she’d used the bigger bow, and nothing had happened. The small thing he handed her seemed like a bow used by kids to practice.

"I want the bigger one," she grumbled displeasingly as she reached out for his other hand to take the bigger one, but her husband held it away from her reach yet again.

"Not on my watch, love. Use this one or nothing," he said with a sweet smile, but before Ave could do or even say anything, Rylan had muttered a curse and reached out over her head and grabbed the bigger bow from Lucian’s grip before he saw it coming.

"Let her use what she prefers and stop treating her like a small child," Rylan mused as he turned to hand the bow to his beaming sister, he looked like an elder brother snatching candy back from a bully to give his sister. Though he’d not seen her use the bow before, something told him she was good at it and way past the stage of smaller bows meant for kids’ practice. Not to mention Lucian’s men even seemed to agree with her having the bigger one.

"Brother Lucian, Evangeline is good with her target. I’ve never seen a woman as good with a bow as she. With her skills, she could handle fights in wars with it," Prince Orion chided in from the side as he noticed his elder brother’s concerned face at the fact that his wife was now holding a bigger bow.

Lucian turned to glare at his brother. "The name of your future wife will be Evangeline if you ever call her that again. It’s Aveline, and put that thing far away from her before you cut her with it," he warned when the young prince was trying to recklessly swing Rylan’s big sword over his head beside Ave, who was now trying to stand in place to shoot her target with Rylan giving her a few pointers on ways to get the bullseye on the first hit.

Orion grumbled something under his breath before he walked away to the far side of the grounds to practice. "If I will ever marry, I shall never take any Evangeline but rather..." He trailed off as he noticed Lydia walking up towards Zane, holding a gourd of water to him with a slight blush on her face. He couldn’t help but frown in displeasure.

The lass had never blushed like that with him but rather tried to get away from him whenever he tried to strike up a conversation with her. She always came down here every day to watch them practice, and for some twisted reason, he always found pleasure in believing she came here only to watch him get better with his sword. Though she never looked his way, he’d believed it was because she was shy of admitting it was because of him. But now she was blushing shyly at Zane like he was her Lord.

In the past week they had been in Nazia, he’d watched as she glowed more beautifully in the attires she wore and the way she styled her hair. When he noticed Zane was shaking his head no for the water she handed him, Orion smiled and hurried to their direction and snatched the gourd from the lass’s hand before she’d insist that Zane have it.

"I am thirsty," he said as he gulped down the water Lydia had been holding and saving to give Zane.

Lydia’s smile fell away as she looked at the young prince in displeasure. She watched Zane walk away from the corner of her eyes, and when she turned to follow him, the prince blocked her path with the sword in his hand that made her flinch back in fear. He hurriedly put it down when he noticed her frightened expression.

"Come and watch me practice and tell me if you think I am strong enough to face my brother, who is now the Emperor," he ordered with his chin lifted up in the air.

Lydia was tempted to remind him that he couldn’t order her around as they weren’t in the imperial palace, but she was not that courageous. He was superior to her regardless of where they were, thus she nodded her head and followed him to where he began to practice with the sword.

Meanwhile, on the archery board side where Ave was going to shoot her first arrow, Lucian loomed behind her as he watched her hands closely so she wouldn’t get cut by the string she was pulling way too far back over her face. He didn’t know he was holding his breath until she released the arrow on her brother’s instructions, and it hit the bullseye!

In no time, Lucian found himself relaxing from his worries of her hurting herself when she began releasing arrows upon arrows like an expert.

Wow, his wife was really better at it than he’d expected! With her current skills, she could be an archery warrior in their land.

Ave couldn’t help her smile when she caught sight of the proud smile on her husband and brother’s faces as they watched her and clapped for her. When she threw the last arrow at the board, she turned to meet Lucian’s brightened face as he came to stand by her with a smile playing on his handsome face.

"How did I do?" she asked him while wiggling her brows.

"You did wonderfully, love!" he praised as he patted her head in a loving gesture, but when Ave turned to her brother, he wasn’t smiling and had a thoughtful look on his face as he held out more bunches of arrows in his hands.

"Your aim and stance are wonderful, but such skills are useless if you can’t use them on moving things or enemies to defend yourself if you ever fall in a situation where you’d need the skills," Rylan said as he held out the arrows to her, but before she could take them, Lucian held her hand that had turned slightly red from the few arrows she had shot.

"That’s enough for today. She won’t need these skills to defend herself as long as I am beside her," he said, gently rubbing her reddened palm against his to soothe any discomfort she might feel. He understood what Rylan wanted her to prepare for, but he didn’t believe it was necessary. He would always be there to protect her, no matter the situation. If a time ever came when killing someone was the only way out, it wouldn’t be her burden to bear. His wife was no killer, and he didn’t want her to be dragged into the world of danger and bloodshed that he and Rylan had grown accustomed to. Having to take a life to survive wasn’t something he believed she could endure—and he never wanted her to. He would rather face every threat, clearing their path of danger before she followed behind him, safe and untouched by the darkness he carried.

"You know she needs to prepare just in case. There might come a time when she would need it, and God forbid neither you nor I will be there," Rylan said calmly as he still held out the arrows to his sister. He could understand what Lucian was trying to do, and he would totally agree with him had the world they all lived in not been full of known and unknown dangers, especially now that she had a price on her head without her knowledge. Outside the walls of this palace lay thousands of people after her.

He had lived eighteen years of his life away from her to keep her safe. He had spent days in the same palace with her back in the imperial palace, and not once had he been able to shower her with his brotherly love. He had found many excuses to be with her, and now that she knew about the relationship between them, he wanted so much to protect her from every little danger, but he knew with the uncertainty of their situation, they all had to prepare for the worst to befall them. He would not let his sister roam around without at least knowing ways to defend herself or fight back if she were to fall into some danger.

Lucian wanted to protest even more, but then seeing that his wife looked curious at what Rylan wanted her to do, he decided to allow it, not because he believed for a second that he would let her ever be in a situation where she’d need it now that his love for her knows no end and he’d stick around with her, but because she seemed interested and was already pulling her hand away from his to reach for the arrows.

"What do you want to teach me?" she questioned Rylan curiously as she admired the different set of arrows he’d given her. They were different from the black ones she’d used to shoot just now. These ones were gold and had sharper edges and felt heavier to hold.

"You will practice with it on a living person and a moving person," he told her calmly, causing Ave to gasp and then begin to shake her head in protest at the outrageous idea of practicing on a living person. She wasn’t going to kill anyone to practice!

As if reading her thoughts, Rylan assured her, "You won’t be killing but practicing."

"How am I to practice on a living person without killing them with such sharp arrows?" she asked, not completely understanding what he meant by practicing on someone and not killing. She soon understood his meaning when Rylan went to stand at the front of the target with an apple resting on his head.

"Shoot the apple without missing your shot or killing me," he instructed nonchalantly. If she could only target a broad board, it would be a useless skill. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

"No way in hell am I doing that!" Ave exclaimed in disbelief, regretting her decision to agree to practice her skills further. She’d only ever practiced on a board in the modern world and not once had she shot a smaller object or a living or moving person. She could miss her shot and end up killing her brother!

"You can do it, Aveline!" Rylan encouraged.

Ave shook her head as she turned to look up at her husband to help her tell her crazy brother that she was not going to do this, but to her surprise, her husband was giving her an encouraging nod as well! No way!

"I can’t," she shook her head, not believing in her target. She should have agreed with Lucian when he insisted she not practice further.

Lucian noticed the terror in her eyes and also felt the fear in her heart in his own. He was tempted to ease her out of doing this, but thinking more about what Rylan had said, he also believed she needed to practice further. This stage of practice had been given to every archer in their world when they had reached her level of skill.

Wrapping his arm around her waist, he leaned down to whisper into her ear, "You can do it, my love. Your brother knows what he’s doing, and if he sensed that you missed your target, he’ll move away before it’ll hit him." He kissed her earlobe, sending an electric shiver down her already scattered nerves at the thought of using her brother as a target.

Pursing her lips, she subconsciously leaned into his arms and purred, "You are seducing me instead of encouraging me. I really don’t want to hurt him." She rubbed her face against his solid chest.

"Then how about I take his place? I have inhuman speed and can move away from your shot if you miss. You’ll be amazed at how fast I move." He stroked her hair tenderly as she absurdly moved away from him with widened eyes at his suggestion of switching with Rylan.

She began to protest when Rylan’s lazy, bored voice came from behind, "Are you two seriously going to start the public display of affection again? Aveline, hurry up and shoot at me!"
