Chapter 248: uncouth wife

She began to protest when Rylan’s lazy, bored voice came from behind, "Are you two seriously going to start the public display of affection again? Aveline, hurry up and shoot at me!"

Leaning down, Lucian pecked her lips and then walked up to the target board and took Rylan’s place after exchanging some words with him. Rylan shrugged and gave him the apple before he went to stand by his nervous-looking sister.

"You can do it. He heals faster than you can imagine; if you hit him, it wouldn’t be a problem," he said to encourage her, but that only made her more nervous as she knew that her husband never healed from injuries caused by her hands. She didn’t know why they believed she needed such practice when she already knew how to use a bow!

"You can do it, Babe!" Lucian said with a smirk, causing their audience, who had never heard an adult being called an infant, to gasp at his choice of words to address his wife.

Ave took a deep breath and fixed her stance. This was crazy, she thought in her mind. She was about to shoot an apple on the head of her beloved husband!

"You better be as fast as you claim you are, Lucian!" she called out as she poised the arrow against the bowstring and lifted it up to her face. He let out a bark of laughter that always sent butterflies fluttering in the pit of her stomach before he gave her a thumbs-up. She smiled in spite of herself as she closed one eye to focus on her target. She willed her hands to stop shaking before she’d mess things up. Taking another deep, calming breath and setting her sights on the apple, she released the arrow.

The gasp of her audience almost made her believe for a moment that she’d shot her husband until she put her hands down, looked closely, and saw the arrow struck in the apple above his head against the board. She let out a shaky breath as she slowly began to smile.

"I did it!" she cried out excitedly as she jumped up and down before raising up her skirt and doing a victory dance, then a moonwalk that stunned the onlookers. "Woohoo!" She did a Michael Jackson move and lifted up her imaginary hat at her husband’s direction before she gave him a wink and an airy kiss that made him let out a shout of laughter and shake his head in amused disbelief at his wife’s outrageous dance steps. Hadn’t she looked so nervous a while ago? Aveline Lucian Pendragon, he thought in amusement, would never stop amazing him.

The onlookers couldn’t help but wonder if the prince was sane for not chiding his wife for raising her skirt and dancing like that in public without shame but instead laughing proudly.

Nina, who watched from the window, dug her fingers into the windowsill as her eyes burned with tears at the man she had lost to an uncouth lady like the human.

"It is time you let go of your love for him. He has marked the human, and you know what that means," her sister said from beside her as she watched the tears roll down Nina’s beautiful bronze cheeks.

She knew perfectly well what it meant to find a mate. No woman would ever appeal to him ever again but his mate; she would be his everything, and Nina knew there was no power in this world strong enough to make the prince look at her or any other woman the way he did his mate. She had lost him even before she had him, and that hurt more than she could bear, especially when he was staring at his wife with love in his eyes at this very moment.

She broke out into sobs and turned to hug her sister.

"Next level," Rylan announced after getting back his senses after watching the dance movement his sister had just done. Since her husband didn’t chide her nor seemed displeased about her behavior, he didn’t see why he should.

Ave turned to her brother, her happy smile slowly falling away. "What is the next level?" she asked dreadfully.

"You will shoot at your husband as he runs around the grounds. By the way, he told me he can catch the arrow in his hand before it hits him," Rylan told her what Lucian had said before they switched positions.

"I am not shooting at him!" she exclaimed with a firm shake of her head as she turned to Lucian, who was grinning at her as he rolled up his shirt sleeves. He was preparing to start running, she could tell, but she didn’t really want to shoot at him. She gave him a pleading look for him not to make her do this level, but he offered her an encouraging smile.

"Get ready to shoot me down, wife. If you don’t miss, I’ll grant you a present of whatever you desire," came Lucian’s encouraging words as he slowly began to run.

Ave didn’t care about any presents at this moment when she was required to shoot at him. What if he didn’t catch it and she hit him? What if she hurt him? She heard Rylan’s encouraging words from her side and Lucian’s as he began to move around, but she shook her head no and refused to shoot the arrow.

"Trust me, love. I won’t let your arrow hit me. I promise," Lucian said softly.

Slowly and gradually, she decided to trust him and took a deep breath as she lifted the bow. "You better not let it hurt you," she warned as she posed her arrow. He laughed at her warning as he ran. She’d never shot at any moving object, not to mention a human. His movement was so hard for her to target. She released her arrow, but unfortunately, she missed his direction as he’d moved away before the arrow hit him.

Ave found herself smiling shakily as she missed him. She dreaded hitting his direction.

"Again, love."

She took another breath and tried to target him again. The arrow went at full speed towards Lucian, and she held her breath for a moment until he caught it between his hands before it hit him right on the face. Ave’s legs almost gave way as she breathed out in relief.

"Good shot. Increase your speed, Your Highness!" Rylan declared as the prince wasn’t moving fast enough.

Ave prepared for the next level, more assured now that Lucian could catch a flying arrow in his bare hands before it hit him. Her husband was really extraordinary, she thought as she took her position.

Ave released the arrow and it missed him. She tried again, but just like the first time, she missed him. He was moving so fast she could barely keep her eyes on him! At first, she was relieved that she kept missing him, but when he kept making her redo her shot, she slowly started to get frustrated. She was a good archer, but targeting a fast-moving person was quite challenging, and she wanted to get it over with and release her twisted nerves.

She tried and missed again, then gritted her teeth. "You’re moving too damn fast, Lucian!" she yelled in frustration.

"That’s the challenge, wife. If you ever encounter a creature that’s not human, you have to keep up with the inhuman speed to shoot it down!" He laughed without slowing down his speed, even though he wanted more than anything to make it easier for her. A night creature’s speed was more than what he was giving her now. They are her worst enemies, and though he didn’t believe with him around she’d be encountering one alone, he wouldn’t take any risk with her life. She needed to know how to keep up her eyes with his speed to attack her target.

Ave was getting angry now when she kept on missing. She almost yelled at Rylan when he kept telling her to try again. Couldn’t he see she was trying her best, but her husband was not making it easier on her with his speed?!

Blurring the encouraging words of the people around her, she gritted her teeth and watched Lucian’s movements closely. She knew if she wanted to hit him head-on, it was an impossible feat with that speed of his. She had to target him in her own way and bring him down.

Narrowing her eyes at him, she readied her arrow and waited for a moment for him to move in the direction she had anticipated he would, and when he did, she released it.

Lucian didn’t see it coming as he’d believed she wouldn’t be able to hit him with his speed, but his wife had outsmarted him in a way that his eyes missed the flying arrow that came in the direction he had moved to. She didn’t target him but the direction she knew he would surely move to. He missed catching the arrow. However, he was fast to grab the arrow as the sharp edge hit his chest before it went deep into it. He didn’t even flinch as the arrow edge stuck to his chest but not deep because he’d held a part of it to stop the speed it was shot with.

Time seemed to freeze on Ave’s part as she believed she’d struck her husband on the chest. Her eyes widened before she flung the bow away and went running towards his direction as he pulled out the arrow and threw it to the floor.

"OH MY GOD!" she cried out in panic as she reached his side and used her shaky hands to cover his bleeding chest. "I... I didn’t mean to... You’re bleeding... Someone call the doctor!!" she cried out, too disoriented and scared that she didn’t notice the smile playing on his face as he watched her trying to stop the little bleeding in his chest.

"My love—" he began to speak, but she shut him up.

"Don’t try to speak, hold up your energy," she said as she frantically looked around for who had gone to call the doctor. She could barely even see through the tears that had gathered in her eyes, her lips quivering uncontrollably as she couldn’t believe she’d hit him on the chest, the side where his heart lay. She felt him wrap his arms around her body and pull her to him. She didn’t realize he was laughing until she heard the rumbling in his chest as he hugged her.

Frowning in confusion at the fact that he hadn’t fallen to his knees with such a sharp arrow that had hit him, she blinked away her tears and looked up to the amusement shining in his amber eyes. Then she looked around and saw that no one had panicked like she had, and they were all still standing where they were.

Looking towards his chest where she believed he’d been hit, she reached up and unbuttoned his shirt to reveal his chest. She noticed that it was just a small cut and the arrow had not gone deep. She first let out a shaky breath of relief before she moved away from his hold and glared at him.

"Damn you for making me crazy with worry," she said through her tears of relief and then began to turn away in anger, but he hurriedly reached out and pulled her into his arms.

"It wasn’t my intention. I’m sorry," he apologized as she tried to get away from his hug.

Ave couldn’t believe she’d made a fool of herself in front of everyone without even checking to see where the arrow had hit him. Furthermore, he’d promised he’d make sure not to get hit by her shot, but he’d allowed her to hurt him. But when he held her like this and murmured words of apology, she couldn’t find it in her heart to get angry at him.

"I don’t want to shoot any more arrows at you," she mused as she slipped her arms around his waist and hugged him back. She felt his lips against her hair and a smile in his voice as he said, "You won’t. No more practice, let’s go back inside."

He leaned down before gathering her in his arms and walking away from everyone who had been watching in amazement at how she had even been able to target the prince with his speed.

Especially Zane, who knew Lucian had been using his inhuman speed earlier. Nobody could have been able to hit the prince with that movement, but the princess had. He had thought this many times, but he couldn’t help but think it again. She fit the position of his wife more than anyone could. Someone like her must never be his enemy because she might succeed in killing him if she wanted to.
