Chapter 254: Miserable

Because of her tears and emotions, Ave barely realized when she was guided back into the room she shared with Lucian by Nadia, who seemed and acted strong for a pregnant woman. She led her to the bed and made her sit down before giving her a cup of water to drink. She took the water with a shaky hand and swallowed it with force as the huge lump in her throat wouldn’t go down. Her eyes burned until she let the tears flow down without stopping them.

Lord, she was going to be miserable for the rest of the week. She’d known the feeling of missing someone you love when he first went to war, but even that feeling paled in comparison to this. Now she felt so disoriented and emotional that it surprised her that she had not clung and cried and insisted on going with him. It was like a part of her had been torn away. He wasn’t gone forever, but it felt almost like he was in her heart.

She clutched her fingers around the cup and broke out into sobs. What the hell was wrong with her? She had lived many years without him, but just a week apart was suddenly so long to her? She had to pull herself together, but God, she couldn’t! She felt like crying until she felt numb.

Ave would have continued crying had Nadia not come to sit beside her and said, "You should stop that, Aveline. Your husband will be restless and tense because of your emotions. He can feel you, and the more you cry, the more he won’t be able to concentrate or even travel with a clear mind. You have to hold strong for his sake and keep your emotions under control until his return," she advised as she reached out to cup Ave’s hand into hers.

Hearing Nadia’s words, Ave’s sobs and tears immediately ceased, and her head turned to look at the young woman. "Will he feel my exact emotions with the aching feeling in my heart?" she asked in a small curious voice.

"Yes, sometimes even much more intense than yours because it would be two in one for him. I learned to always control my feelings whenever I have to part with my husband. You see, I can feel his as well, but for you, it is different," Nadia said to her with a friendly smile, and her words seemed to have worked as a distraction for Ave as she became curious about things, momentarily putting her miserable feelings aside.

Wiping her tear-streaked cheeks, she asked, "How is it different? Why can’t I feel him?"

"Because you are not of the same kind," she explained. "Though I myself am not the same as my husband, which was why he initially refused to accept me as his mate. You remember what I told you about my man fighting our bond and refusing to take me, right?"

Ave nodded, clearly recalling her conversation that night with Nadia when Lucian was still refusing to consummate their marriage and she’d sought help from the pregnant woman. Nadia had told her about her husband refusing her despite knowing they were meant to be together.

"Why did he refuse you then?"

Nadia smiled. "Because I am an omega," she said, but seeing that Ave didn’t understand what it meant or why he would refuse her for that, she continued to explain. "In our land, we rank from high to low in strength and power. An omega is the weakest of our kind because we are born without a wolf and are just a bit stronger than humans. However, we have all the werewolf traits from sharp smell and the ability to have a mate and smell them. I was brought here to work as one of the maids by the king, but the moment I stepped foot into the castle, I knew my mate was here. It took me no time to spot him that morning because he’d followed my scent from his room. Realizing who I was and that I am one of the weakest of our kind, he rejected me and insisted I get thrown out of the castle."

Ave got so invested in Nadia’s story that she pulled her legs up to the bed and bent them under her.

"What happened next?" she asked.

"Well, you see, before I came here, Kale and Talinor were the only ones without mates. It was said Kale had almost given up searching for his mate and settled for anyone as he believed he had no mate. But when he realized I was his mate, he rejected me because he had high expectations to have a strong mate just like his brothers were he to have one. It tore at my very soul to be rejected, but thanks to Elm, who knew that if his little brother threw me out, he’d live the rest of his life in misery, he kept me regardless of it.

"Kale fought with everything in him to never seek me out. He ignored me and pretended like he never saw me. The instinct to bond is torturous when fighting it, and he tried to fight it until the night I could no longer hold it in myself and went to seduce him just like I taught you that night."

Ave smiled, getting more invested in the story than she had initially thought she would. "Did he fall into your trap, or did he still fight it like my Lucian had?" she asked.

"I was ready for him that night. I wasn’t ready to let him keep treating me like a nobody when the Moon Goddess had destined us for each other. When I went to him, he was tossing and turning and suffering on his bed. He tried to resist and even begged me to go away from his life, but I knew if I did, he would suffer more. I climbed onto his bed after stripping off my robes and made him touch me. I made him feel me in ways that he wouldn’t be able to resist anymore until he gave in and marked me that same night. The next day, his possessiveness and feelings towards me were so intense it surprised me. I became the center of his attention that he fought with Acer and his wife when they refused me a seat in the dining hall because of my low-life background..."

Nadia went on and explained to Ave how the siblings’ fight that day had been the reason she’d sworn never to sit in the royal dining hall to give them peace. She even swore to never let go of her maid duty, no matter what her husband said. She would earn her stay in the castle even if it meant working as a maid because, as an omega, she could contribute nothing in a home full of Alphas. Despite Kale’s insistence, she had refused to let go of her duty, which was why she had assigned herself to become Ave’s servant when she first came.

"What about your sisters-in-law? I never saw you with them since we came here," Ave said quietly as she couldn’t help but think that Nadia had been brave to earn her keep.

"We have never spoken once since the day I mated with Kale. They treat me like I don’t exist, but I really don’t mind for as long as I know Kale loves and cares about me," she said with a small laugh as she added, "You should see their reaction, especially Acer’s wife when I became pregnant before her. They always believed an omega could never birth an Alpha’s child, and when Kale announced to everyone that we were expecting a baby, their resentment towards me doubled for it. Ysoria, Acer’s wife, once said to me, ’I can’t wait to see how you can handle birthing that child as an omega.’ You should have seen her expression when she said that."

Nadia laughed softly, getting so free with Ave as if they had known each other for a long time and had been friends.

"That’s absurd," Ave said with a scoff, leaning forward slightly. "Why would she ever think you couldn’t handle birthing Kale’s baby when you are already carrying the baby? It sounds to me like she’s just bitter and grasping at straws to belittle you. Honestly, her thoughts are as ridiculous as they are vain. You’ve already proved them all wrong just by existing in Kale’s life as an omega, let alone carrying his child. I’d love to see her face when the baby arrives—bet that will shut her up for good. I look forward to seeing their reaction when the day comes!"

Ave had never liked the royal ladies of the palace since the first day they came here because of how they had openly bullied her and called her a weakling. It wasn’t surprising that they would do the same to Nadia as well, and though she knew it was none of her business, she suddenly found that she would love to watch their bitterness when Nadia would have her baby.

They continued to talk on for hours that Ave did not realize how much time had passed. She realized that Kale had been genuinely nice to her to the point of allowing her to ride on his back that night when she went down the dungeon to meet Lucian because of how Nadia would talk to him about Ave.

Ave was surprised to realize that she was the first person who had ever talked to Nadia like this since her arrival in the castle two years ago. She had no friends, and her in-laws weren’t so welcoming of her, nor were the other servant girls who were jealous of her being a wife and a mate to one of the handsome princes. Her husband was her friend and beloved.

"From now on, if they bully you or give you an eye, I will be one call away," Ave said as she reached out instinctively and hugged Nadia. "I don’t care if they are werewolves or whatever." She gave her a friendly pat on the back that made Nadia laugh and hug her back.

"I’m glad that my life story brought you out of your tears. Be strong for your man and don’t allow him to feel weak because of your emotions. I learned to control mine through the years when I realized Kale feels much weaker when I am, and my emotional weakness weakened him to a powerless man. It’s just for a week, and perhaps it might not be that long and—oh!" she groaned painfully and moved away from the hug, clutching her swollen belly.

Ave looked at her in concern, "Are you okay? Is it time? Are you in labor?!" she exclaimed, about to scramble out of bed, but Nadia chuckled and grabbed her by the hand.

"I am not in labor. Whenever the baby kicks, it’s always painful, and it always catches me off guard. He does that mostly when his father is away from us." She smiled, caressing her belly.

Watching her, Ave couldn’t help but think it would be wonderful to have such an experience. What would it feel like to have Lucian’s child? she thought, and the mere thought of it brought a thrilling feeling to her chest that she couldn’t help but feel her heart skip a beat.

"How did you know it’s a he?" Ave asked, putting aside her thrilling feelings of having a child. She knew that there was no technology in this era for them to know a child’s gender before its birth.

"He kicks way too hard to be a girl, though Kale thinks otherwise. I believe it’s a son."

They talked for some more time before Ave noticed the dark circles under Nadia’s eyes and how she kept yawning every now and then. With her condition, she needed more rest, thus Ave pretended to be tired so Nadia would also go and rest as she seemed to want to keep her company so she wouldn’t think about Lucian.

Ave escorted her to her room and watched her walk slowly into it before she turned and smiled at her before closing the door. The first time she met Nadia, she had been stronger and had not moved this slow; perhaps she was approaching her due date.

Staring at the door for a few more seconds, she turned and made her way back to her own room, but when she reached where Rylan’s room was on the same corridor as theirs, she stopped in her tracks, stunned speechless at what she saw.

What the hell? she thought as she watched Celeste sneaking quietly into her brother’s room. She was being so sneaky but not sneaky enough to notice that she was being watched by Ave. She closed the door behind her and even put a lock on it, as Ave heard the sound.

Ave decided to wait and see if Rylan would send her out or if she would hear some sort of argument, but to her astonishment, the door did not open again even after she stood there for some more minutes. What could Celeste want from Rylan that she would sneak into his room at this time of the night? And why was her brother not sending her out? What could they be doing or talking about?

Ave wondered, and she felt the urge to go and knock and find out. But then she thought against it. It was totally none of her business whatever they were doing. They both are adults, though her brother was six or seven years older than Celeste. She didn’t think it was farfetched if they had something going on between them. It would even do good to her if her brother ended up with Celeste. The girl had matured so much from when Ave first met her and Isolde. fгeewebnovёl.com

She just hoped her brother would be smart enough not to go on and bed Celeste before marrying her, or Lucian would drag his dead body if he impregnated his sister, who she noticed had started to feel protective over his sisters for the past days.

Shrugging and deciding to turn a blind eye to it, she quietly made her way back to her room. The moment she entered the room, she was knocked short by the flood of memories of Lucian and the tightening feeling in her chest when she realized he was not here with her, but recalling Nadia’s words, she pushed those feelings away and took a deep breath before she went and changed into a nightdress.

Ave did her night routine in an automatic motion without thinking or allowing herself to remember the night she spent in this room with her husband. She hummed a song to herself as she changed and did her hair, and then lastly, she went to the wardrobe and took one of Lucian’s shirts and wore it over her nightdress before she crawled into bed on his side of the bed and closed her eyes. She didn’t allow herself to think about him; she basked in his scent and the warmth of his shirt that made her believe he was with her and was holding her to sleep.

She forced herself into a sleep without thinking of her husband. But she was soon plagued by a terrible nightmare.
