Chapter 266: A Witch!

Ave and Seraphina were in the deep deserted part of the palace when they heard the emergency alarm drums and knew they had finally realized that she had escaped the room. The air around the palace grew tense, and she felt it from where she was. They had made sure to walk in the part where no one would see them, and she wished her injured thighs would heal fast enough so she could walk and do things properly.

She had just learned that a few days after Caelan’s coronation, the Empress had given Thalia out for marriage to a middle-aged man who showed interest in her and bargained to give the Empress three hundred soldiers in exchange for the princess. And Elara had sent the princess away the very next day, kicking and crying, but she had been forced into the carriage against her will, while her elder brother remained abandoned in the inner part of the palace, sleeping for eternity.

However, Seraphina had said she’d sneaked to him a few times to take care of him. He was still breathing, but half of him was gone, and the Empress seemed to have forgotten about his existence completely, so no one talked about him.

Now, Ave and Seraphina went into the room he was kept in as it was located in the deserted part they were walking in. No doubt men had been sent out to look for them at this point, and if they weren’t careful, they’d be caught before Lucian arrived. She just needed to hold them off from getting her until he invaded the palace, and in her current condition, she had no idea how she would be able to fight were they to get caught.

She walked into the chamber with the help of Seraphina, and a gasp left her mouth when she saw the condition of the first prince, laying almost dead on a dust-covered bed and dirty looking room. He had lost weight and the gleam of life; his skin looked dull and lifeless, his lips had turned purplish-dark. She would have thought he was dead if not for the little rise and fall of his chest.

She walked up to his bed and sat at the side of it. She stared at him in pity. She could hear the distant sounds of the tower clock hitting midnight, and she prayed with each passing moment that Lucian was drawing near because she had no idea how long she could hide for.

They remained in the room in silence as she couldn’t do anything for the prince as he lay on his deathbed when she heard the distant voices of men opening and closing doors.

Ave leapt from her sitting position. They were coming this way; she could hear them. Her ears were sharper than that of a normal human, and she could tell Seraphina didn’t hear what she was hearing, thus, she muttered, "They are coming this way!"

"How did you know?" Seraphina asked in panicked disbelief as she looked around the room as if trying to listen to what Ave was hearing, but she heard nothing.

"We have to leave," Ave said hurriedly, though not many of them were coming this way, she couldn’t afford to be caught again. But then she turned to look at the prince, and a thought came to her mind. If only he was awake, he could help them get rid of the men and also help them navigate the palace and also get his trusted men to fight from inside when Lucian arrived. ƒreewebɳovel.com

But how was she going to wake him when her powers weren’t working again? She wondered desperately as she stared at him while Seraphina went to peek outside the door to see if the men were coming as Ave had said.

Ave bit the inside of her cheeks as she contemplated what to do. She turned her eyes to the unlit chandelier in the chamber and willed it to come on with her mind, and to her astonishment, it came on! She had only tried it to test her powers again, but she had not expected it to work.

Seraphina turned at the sudden brightness in the room only to see Ave biting the tip of her finger to draw blood and then putting it against the prince’s mouth and muttering something under her breath that made the light of the chandelier turn on and off and the windows open and close by themselves.

Seraphina’s eyes widened. "What are you doing?!" she exclaimed as she looked around the room where the light was going on and off in disbelief and back to Ave feeding her blood to the unconscious prince.

She’d never seen anything like this happen before, but she’d heard so much about witches to know that what Ave was doing wasn’t normal, and if she didn’t stop it, it would pull the attention of the palace guards to this room and get them killed.

Recently, word had spread about Selene being a wanted witch, with rumors claiming she was responsible for Princess Madeline’s and the others’ disappearance. Seraphina hadn’t believed the rumors, dismissing them as one of Elara’s many conspiracy to get her hands on her children and the second prince. But now, seeing it with her own eyes, she was momentarily frozen in fear. She couldn’t believe Selene was truly a witch! And on top of that, the last thing she wanted was to be accused of aiding a witch after helping her escape!

Seraphina was contemplating fleeing the room to save herself when the prince’s eyes suddenly flew open, startling her so much that it felt like her soul momentarily left her body and returned. She froze as the gray in his eyes seemed to spark to life, staring unblinkingly at Ave. Before she could react, he abruptly grabbed Ave by the neck and sat up on the bed.

Seraphina clamped her palm against her mouth to muffle her screams as she moved back to the wall at the sight of the dead-looking man now awake and now strangling Selene with a savage look on his face. She wanted to run, but she feared running into a palace guard, thus she stood frozen in the room, afraid to even interject when Ave seemed to be struggling to breathe.

"What did you do to me?" Alden growled in a low dangerous voice as he looked at Ave accusingly while he tightened his hand around her neck. The last thing he recalled was falling in the middle of a battle, and now he opened his eyes to find this woman in his face with her finger looming over his mouth as she dripped her blood into his mouth.

Ave struggled to breathe, and when he didn’t release her, she raised her hand and grabbed a handful of his hair and pulled at it in a desperate attempt to get away from him. She had saved him so he could help them, not because she wanted to die in his hands!

She pulled his long hair so hard he grimaced, but he didn’t release her neck until Seraphina finally snapped out of her shock and spoke, "Prince Alden, let go of her. You’re going to kill her!"

He released her immediately at the sound of the voice and turned to look at his stepmother with furrowed brows, while Ave moved back, away from the crazy man she had saved, and instead of receiving a thank you, he had grabbed her neck.

For some reason, after using her spell to awaken him, she felt her body losing its energy, and her limbs were growing weaker, just like how she always felt after saving someone’s life with her powers.

"What’s going on here?" Alden finally asked after noticing the attire his stepmother was wearing and the dirty room he was in. His head was banging so hard he couldn’t make sense of anything. His memories were not clear, and he couldn’t remember being in such a room. He turned to look at the redheaded woman who now sat, hugging her arms around herself like she was cold, on the floor of his bed as she stared at him with a small glare in her eyes.

"You’re welcome," she scoffed. "I saved your life, and you almost killed me," she grumbled under her breath, her gaze fixed on the cold, stone-hard weariness etched into his face as he regarded her with distrust.

"Why am I here?" he demanded calmly, his sharp eyes locked on hers, ignoring her glares and her mention of saving his life.

Ave wanted nothing more than to ignore him as well and regain her strength, but she needed his help. Before he could assist, he had to understand everything that had happened while he was cast into an enchanted sleep. As the commander of the Pendragon army, the soldiers would listen to him—which was exactly why she had risked saving him.

Clearing her throat, she began to tell him everything. It reached a point she couldn’t talk again because she was shivering, and then the fourth consort resumed to tell him the rest. He realized he had been unconscious for a month now, and their father was dead and what the Empress had done afterwards.

Alden could hardly believe what he was being told. And when he realized what had happened to his sister, he lost it. The Empress had gone too far. How dare she give his sister away without his permission?! And how dare she place Caelan on the throne when the elder sons were still alive?! Seraphina also told him that she suspected the Empress had something to do with the Emperor’s death because she refused the outside physicians to check on him.

After he was told everything, the room went still silent for some time as he digested the information, and then slowly he turned to look at Ave, who was looking sickish and was bruised from her face to her legs, and said, "And you saved me..." Only a witch could save him, which meant she was one. Witches—he hated them with everything in him because he believed one had been responsible for his mother’s death. But he couldn’t dare hate this one who had saved him, even though she had no reason to want him alive.

Clearing his voice, he muttered, "Thank you..."

Ave could barely hear his words of gratitude because he whispered them. His face showed no emotions as usual and was cold as ice, but she managed to smile at him as she saw he looked uncomfortable expressing his gratitude when she didn’t reply.

"We can’t remain here for long, we have to leave..." she said through chattering teeth as she felt the men getting closer to them. She told Alden about everything the Empress planned to do once Lucian invaded, and they had to keep away until he came.

Prince Alden was out of the bed in a flash, though he swayed on his feet before he balanced himself and closed and opened his eyes. He didn’t like Lucian, but he would never allow the Empress to get away with what she had done to his sister and the cunning ways she had placed Caelan on the throne.

"Are you alright?" Alden asked when he noticed Ave’s pale sickly face. She nodded.

"Can you walk?" he asked again. She wanted to nod, but she knew she would be kidding herself. She couldn’t even stand properly. Perhaps that was why Lucian was against her using her powers to save anyone, because it always took its toll on her whenever she used it.

Before she could answer, the first prince walked up to her, bent down, despite his fragile-looking state and how thinner he looked compared to when she first met him, and lifted her up with ease and carried her in a bridal style in his arms, taking her by surprise.

"We can’t waste time. I need to get to my men and get them ready before Lucian arrives. I can’t let you slow me down," he said to her when she tried to get down from his arms. Ave stopped trying and allowed her head to fall on his shoulder as her body was growing weaker with each passing minute. She felt sleepy.

They were about to step out when three men searching this part of the palace burst into the room. Alden muttered a curse. Putting her down, he attacked the men before they could draw their swords. However, one of the men just so happened to be one of his men, and immediately the soldier saw him, he went down on his knees and bowed his head.

"Your Highness! I am at your service!" he cried out. Many of them had been brought to the Empress’s side after they were told their prince was dead, and they had no choice but to change sides.

Alden turned and picked up the weakened Ave again in his arms before pulling his frightened stepmother to his side and ordering the soldier sternly, "Get the others ready without alerting the Empress’s men. You must not let them know I am awake. When the war starts, we shall fight with my other brother!"
