The birthday party had ended, and dawn was beginning to break over the horizon. Ephyra sat on her bed, her knees pulled up to her chest, arms wrapped tightly around her legs. The room was quiet now, the remnants of the celebration scattered across her desk and nightstandβa few unwrapped presents, a card from Jania, and a slice of cake saved for later.
Her mind, however, was anything but peaceful.
The dreamβor was it a memory?βplayed on repeat in her head. She couldnβt stop thinking about the metallic ceiling, Auroraβs gentle voice, and Aeronaβs piercing silver hair. It had all felt so real. Then there was the AIβs voice in the void, cold and detached yet painfully clear:
"Ephyra Althea Vale. Gender: Female. Age: 18 years (as of today)."
The memory of the AIβs words sent chills down her spine. It hadnβt just been a dream. The AI had addressed her as Ephyra, stating it was her 18th birthday. How could that be possible?
Her fingers trembled slightly as she hugged herself tighter.
"That has to be a mistake," she whispered to herself. "It was talking about the body Iβm in... not me."
But the logic didnβt hold. She vividly remembered the AIβs earlier claim, before she went into Ephyraβs bodyβthat her soul had returned to its original body. If that were true, it could only mean one thing: the body she was in nowβthe body of Ephyra Allen, or was it Ephyra Vale?βwasnβt just hers by coincidence.
It was hers by birth.
Her breathing quickened as the realization sank in. Her mind raced with questions, each one louder and more chaotic than the last. If this body was her original one, how had her soul ended up as Eira Kingston? Why had the swap happened in the first place? And where were Aerona and Aurora?
She couldnβt shake the image of Aeronaβs shimmering silver hair or the raw emotion in her voice when she had held her as a baby.
If she was really Ephyra... then Elara was not her mother.
All the entries sheβd read in Elaraβs diary flashed in her mindβhow sheβd kept mentioning a master, feeling guilty, and never describing Ephyra as a daughter.
She buried her face in her knees, the weight of her thoughts pressing down on her like an unrelenting storm. Elara had always been distant, treating her more like a responsibility than a daughter. Now, it all made senseβthe cryptic diary entries, the hollow expressions, the way Elara had avoided talking about her birth in the diary.
She was never Ephyraβs mother, she thought bitterly. Elara was just... keeping her for someone else.
Her fists clenched tightly as anger and confusion churned within her.
"What does this mean?" she murmured, her voice cracking under the weight of her confusion.
Still, one thing was clearβshe needed answers, and there was only one place she could get them.
"AI," she called softly, hesitating before continuing. "Are you there?"
A soft chime echoed in her mind before the familiar mechanical voice responded.
"Miss Ephyra, I am here. I would also like to inform you that my name has been changed to Donna. You may refer to me as Donna from now on."
She raised a brow at the unexpected update. "Donna?"
"Yes, Miss Ephyra?"
She exhaled shakily. "I... I have a question. I need you to answer me honestly."
"You may ask any question, Miss Ephyra. As long as I possess the information, I will answer truthfully."
Her fingers gripped the fabric of her pajama pants tightly as she steeled herself. "Was what you said earlier true? About... my body and my soul?"
There was a brief pause, and for a moment, Ephyra thought Donna wouldnβt answer.
"Yes, Miss Ephyra," the AI replied, its tone even. "Your soul has returned to its original body. This bodyβEphyra Althea Valeβis the one you were born with."
Her heart plummeted as the confirmation hit her like a tidal wave.
"But..." she started, her voice trembling. "How? Why... why was my soul in someone elseβs body for all those years? Why did I think I was Eira Kingston?"
Donna paused again, as if searching its vast database for the right words.
"The full explanation to your latter question can only be given by the Administrator. However, I can confirm that your soul was transferred from its original body into another by means of very dangerous advanced technology, which was carried out by the Administrator. Your soul and the other soul were swapped due to a necessity created by circumstances beyond your control. The transfer was initiated by Administrator Aerona Vale, your biological mother, to protect you from an imminent threat. Your identity as Eira Kingston was a result of that transfer."
Ephyraβs breath caught in her throat. Her mind spun as Donnaβs words sank in.
"My mother... Aerona... did this?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, her trembling hands clutching the fabric of her pants. "She... she put me in Eira Kingstonβs body?"
"Correct, Miss Ephyra," Donna confirmed. "The transfer was done to ensure your survival. The other soul involved was placed in your original body to maintain balance and ensure no one could detect the exchange."
Ephyraβs thoughts raced, memories of her life as Eira Kingston flashing before her eyes. The training, the missions, the bloodβeverything she had endured suddenly felt like pieces of a larger puzzle she hadnβt known she was solving.
Ephyraβs throat tightened, and her chest felt heavy. "So... everything I thought I knew about myselfβmy life as Eira Kingstonβwas a lie?"
"Not entirely, Miss Ephyra," Donna replied gently. "The experiences and memories you accumulated as Eira Kingston are real. However, the life you believed to be yours was constructed to conceal the truth of your origins."
"Why?" she asked, her voice cracking with emotion. "Why would my mother do this to me? What was the threat?"
"The threat originated from powerful enemies targeting the Vale bloodline. To protect you, the Administrator took extreme measures."
