It continued, "Your survival was deemed critical to her mission and the legacy of your lineage. However, details of the threat itself are classified and require Administrator clearance."
Ephyra’s chest tightened. "Classified? But I’m her daughter! I deserve to know!"
"Only the Administrator can declassify such information, Miss Ephyra," Donna replied calmly. "I advise seeking her out for the full story."
The mention of seeking Aerona sent a chill down Ephyra’s spine. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to confront the mother she had never truly known—the woman who had, by all accounts, abandoned her in one life and thrust her into another.
Ephyra laughed. "Seeking her out? Are you kidding me? I didn’t even know I had a mother until now, and you’re telling me to seek her out? Do you even know where she is?"
"No, I’m sorry, Miss Ephyra, but I do not know her current location, and I’m prohibited from looking for her."
"See? So how the hell would I be able to seek her out?" She shook her head as she leaned against the headboard and stared at her fingers.
Time passed in silence, but Ephyra broke it with another question.
"Donna?"
"Yes, Miss Ephyra?"
"I’m curious. The body I was in as Eira Kingston was clearly two years older than this body. So how was it done?"
"Yes, you’re correct. Eira Kingston’s soul and body were both two years older than yours at the time of the transfer, and you were one year of age. The Administrator wiped both of your memories before swapping your souls."
Ephyra narrowed her eyes. "Then how did they do it? Didn’t that bastard Eliot notice anything?"
Donna hesitated for a moment before responding, as though carefully considering its words. "The process was complex and required the use of advanced cloaking technology to mask anomalies. Administrator Aerona Vale collaborated with an insider within Eliot’s ranks to ensure the transfer remained undetected. A fabricated narrative was created to explain any discrepancies in both yours and Eira Kingston’s behavior and abilities following the transfer."
Ephyra scoffed. "So, someone on the inside helped her. Of course. And let me guess—this insider is also conveniently unavailable?"
"Correct, Miss Ephyra. The insider’s current whereabouts are unknown. Their involvement was terminated shortly after the operation to ensure the security of all parties involved."
She sighed in frustration, running her fingers through her hair. "This just keeps getting better. So my entire life—my identity—was just part of some grand scheme to protect me from enemies I don’t even know. And now I’m supposed to piece it all together by myself?"
"You are not entirely alone, Miss Ephyra," Donna offered. "I am here to assist you within the parameters of my programming. Additionally, the Administrator left encrypted data fragments across various locations. These fragments may provide clues to her whereabouts and further context about the threat you were protected from."
Ephyra frowned, sitting up straighter. "Encrypted data fragments? Where?"
"The locations are scattered across key points of significance to the Vale lineage. First, you will have to receive your Inheritance to know more."
Ephyra sat up. "The inheritance—it was arranged by Aerona, wasn’t it?"
"Correct, Miss Ephyra, and I’m sure the person tasked with giving you the inheritance will contact you soon."
"I see. What about the Vale family? Do you have information about them?"
"Information about the Vale family was wiped out by both the Administrator and her adversary, and I also wasn’t given access to the information."
Ephyra furrowed her brows, now more than curious about what exactly happened to the Vale family.
"Miss Ephyra, dawn is approaching, and you appear to be tired. I’m conducting a scan of your body, and it shows that your stress levels are elevated. Your body requires rest to recover from the mental strain. Would you like me to assist in initiating a relaxation protocol or guide you into a meditative state?" Donna asked, its voice soft and soothing.
Ephyra sighed, leaning back against the headboard. "No, Donna. I don’t need meditation right now. I need answers."
"Understood, Miss Ephyra. However, to process this new information effectively, adequate rest is recommended," Donna replied, the tone almost maternal in its concern.
Ephyra rubbed her temples. She knew Donna was right—her head felt like it was on the verge of splitting apart. Still, sleep felt impossible with the storm of revelations swirling in her mind.
"Fine," she muttered after a moment. "I’ll try to rest. But Donna, one last thing before I do—"
"Yes, Miss Ephyra?"
"Why didn’t Aerona—my mother—ever come back for me? If I was so important to her, why leave me like this? Alone, confused, and without a clue about who I really am?"
Donna paused again, the silence stretching longer than Ephyra liked.
"Miss Ephyra, based on my available data, I can only speculate. It is possible that circumstances beyond her control prevented her from retrieving you. The Administrator’s final recorded directive prioritized your safety above all else. To ensure this, she may have had to make sacrifices—including distancing herself from you."
Ephyra clenched her fists, biting the inside of her cheek to keep her emotions in check. "Sacrifices," she echoed bitterly. "Great."
"You don’t have to worry, Miss Ephyra. I was built to help you with whatever I can, and I will be here to assist you every step of the way."
Ephyra didn’t respond. Instead, she leaned back against the pillows, her gaze fixed on the ceiling as the first rays of dawn seeped through her curtains.
The answers she sought felt further away than ever, yet the path forward was starting to take shape. If the inheritance held clues, she would pursue it. If fragments of data were scattered across the country or continent, she would find them. And if Aerona Vale was out there somewhere—if her mother was still alive—she would uncover the truth, no matter how deep she had to dig.
For now, though, she let her eyes close, the weight of exhaustion finally winning out. Donna’s voice faded into the background, a gentle hum of reassurance as the darkness engulfed her.
