Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Fire Elemental Magic

The trees twisted, stretching their roots through the earth as the land flattened once more. Green leaves—once consumed by the Corruption of Cinder—sprouted along the branches again, strong and healthy.

The forest had finally been restored.

Lowering her staff with a sigh, Ellegaard looked at Jeanne and Mitsuki, then tilted her head toward the carriage.

It was time to resume their journey.

"Well, that was fun. Let’s head back," Jeanne said, lightly punching Mitsuki’s shoulder before vanishing in a blink.

The next instant, the blonde reappeared beside Ellegaard, leaving Mitsuki once again overwhelmed by the sheer power of the two girls.

’In retrospect, not even last year’s LoM World Finals were this intense. And I almost lost that,’ he thought as he climbed down from the colossus’s corpse like a novice mountaineer.

Walking toward the carriage, he looked around in disbelief that just seconds ago everything had been devastated by battle.

’The good thing is my Fireball leveled up, along with my Stats. It may not be much, but that’s what farming is about. I need to fight more—even if my hands shake when I cast a spell. That’s how I’ll grow stronger.’

He climbed into the carriage with the girls. Soon after, the coachman urged the horses forward, and they continued along the road.

"Do Cinder Titans appear often?" Mitsuki asked, staring at Jeanne’s nose.

However...

"Cinder Titans were once guardians of the forest," Ellegaard said, cutting Jeanne off just as she was about to speak. "They wouldn’t attack anyone unless the forest was harmed. But after the calamity of the Ancient Mysteries, the Cinder corrupted them. Now those noble beasts, protectors of nature, have gone mad and attack anything that moves."

"I see..."

’I can’t even imagine the scale of the Mystery of Cinder. But I suppose that just as there are extremely powerful monsters, there are people just as strong.’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

He looked down, deep in thought.

’Still, if a Cinder Titan is considered weak, I can’t imagine what the strongest creatures must be like... Or maybe I can...’

Master of Cinder...

"Putting Titans aside, there are many stories about the Four Great Ancient Mysteries," Jeanne added. "For example, it’s said that the one responsible for the Mystery of Cinder was someone important within the Kingdom of Holylight. But it’s not confirmed. After all, no one who enters Holylight is ever seen again."

Adjusting a strand of hair from in front of her eye, Ellegaard continued,

"There’s also the Mystery of Tears, the Mystery of Shadows, and the Mystery of Solitude. Each struck a different land across the four cardinal directions—every one of them leaving behind completely absurd and distinct consequences."

’No doubt about that. I’ve already seen a glimpse of what happened...’

He had truly stood within the ancient Kingdom of Holylight and faced an unknown monstrosity.

Just like his transmigration, it was a mystery that created more questions than answers.

’I wonder if one of those infamous Mysteries could help me return home... My manager must be losing her mind trying to find me.’

"Still, those events happened hundreds of years ago. All races have learned how to survive since the catastrophe," Jeanne said.

"That’s why high-ranking adventurers like us exist," Ellegaard added.

Mitsuki raised an eyebrow, intrigued. He remembered they had mentioned something about S-Rank adventurers.

"The kind who join guilds, complete quests, and sell items they get during their adventures?"

"Exactly," Ellegaard replied. "I see that burnt brain of yours is useful for something."

"Well, I was actually a little interested in that. I already have a mana fragment. How much money would I make if I sold it?"

Jeanne thought for a moment before answering,

"With the size of that fragment and the mana it contains, you might get ten silver coins. Enough to survive a week if you’re not picky about food."

’So the economy of this world works like a typical RPG. I can already see where this is going.’

With that in mind, Mitsuki said,

"I guess from now on I’ll just wait to run into monsters to kill. I also need to pay you back for everything you’re doing for me."

Jeanne smiled.

"Of course. You’re very responsible."

"He’s not responsible with his training. He’s pathetic," Ellegaard said flatly.

A crooked grin formed on Mitsuki’s face.

’Sure, whatever you say, Professor Tsundere.’

After that, the conversation died down until night fell. The camp had already been set up—but two of its travelers were still training magic.

"You’ll keep trying until you succeed. If you can’t perceive prana, you’ll never be able to use arcane magic."

"I’ll give it everything this time," Mitsuki said, following Ellegaard’s instructions.

He closed his eyes.

This time, something was different.

[ The skill "Prana Perception Lv. 1" has been activated. ]

Within the darkness of his mind, a gentle chill ran through his body. Small ethereal particles—dark shades of purple—floated around him in perfect harmony.

"I can feel the prana... It’s everywhere."

Ellegaard smiled proudly.

"Good! You’ve got it. Now extend your hand and hold the prana in your palm."

Mitsuki obeyed. With his palm open, he concentrated, drawing the prana toward his hand.

"Hold it tightly and don’t let it escape. When you’re sure you have it, crush it with your mind—compress it into a sphere."

He followed her instructions.

’Once you can feel prana, everything becomes so much easier. I should’ve learned this sooner. This opens so many doors in magic.’

The wind swirled around him. An instant later, a purple sphere floated in his palm.

"You’re doing it, novice! Now open your eyes. Let’s continue with Fire Elemental Magic."

"It was easier this time, for some reason."

"That’s because I’m teaching you. You have the best magic instructor in the country. You should be praising me right now."

’There’s no way I’m doing that. Uh...’ He paused. The prana in his hand was fading.

"The sphere!"

"Focus, novice. The next step is crucial. Imagine the air divided into tiny spheres floating slowly. Then make them vibrate, causing friction in all of them at the same time."

’I’m doing it!’

The sphere in his hand trembled, distorting as small flames flickered across its surface like lightning in a stormy night.

"It’s not enough. Imagine it with all your strength!"

’I already am!’ Mitsuki screamed internally as sweat rolled down his forehead.

The prana continued flickering, building as if it were about to explode. Slowly, it began turning crimson, streaked with small patches of blue and white.

"You’re almost there!" Ellegaard shouted, visibly excited. Her eyes sparkled—she was witnessing the birth of a magical prodigy.

The sphere pulsed like a heart. It expanded a few inches in diameter and—

Mitsuki’s eyes widened at the miracle resting in his palm.

A brilliant blue sphere, its flames trembling calmly around its core.

The tattoo displayed a new notification:

[ Thanks to your brief training, the seal on the skill "Fire Elemental Magic" has been broken. ]

[ The skill "Fireball Lv. 2" has transformed into "Fire Elemental Magic Lv. 1." ]

"This is..."

"You did it," Ellegaard whispered. "In just two days..."

There was both fascination and confusion on her face.

"I did it!" Mitsuki shouted, jumping up from where he had been sitting and throwing his arms around Ellegaard.

Despite her slender frame, he lifted her into the air as he laughed.

"I did it, Ellegaard! I did it!"

But she froze.

A man was holding her by the waist, looking at her with a bright smile on a slightly androgynous face. She blushed at the warmth of Mitsuki’s hands—but reality struck her an instant later.

"You! Who said you could touch me, you perverted dog?!"

Startled by her scream and struggling movements, Mitsuki instinctively let go.

She fell face-first onto the ground.

’Oh no, bro...’

Ellegaard lifted her head—her eyes burning with crimson fury.

"I’m going to kill you."

Near the carriage, Jeanne and the coachman watched as the elf chased the poor boy, staff raised high to strike him.

"It hasn’t been long, and they already get along incredibly well," the coachman commented.

Jeanne offered an awkward smile.

"I know. I’m starting to get worried."

"Ahhh! I didn’t mean it! Help me!" Mitsuki shouted as he ran toward the trees.

And so, the night came to an end.
