[Magnus's PoV]

"He's really not going to help?! Since when was a dwarf more useful than Captain!" Magnus exclaimed as he threw a fireball at a group of squires behind Sylus, instantly engulfing them in flames.

"He's busy drinking. A damned fool, if ye ask me." Sylus responded as he shot down a squire who was looking to take advantage of a distracted Magnus.

The demon army continued pressing them from all sides, driving them away from the tavern and to a building on the other side of the marketplace. Inside this building were numerous trinkets of the past and articles from a day before all this pain and suffering.

By this point, the dwarf and Vakir knew that they had saved a majority of the civilians. Now the fight was simply for their own survival—

"Mom!" A young yet sharp voice cut through the air from 3 buildings away.

Magnus gave one glance to Sylus, who quickly nodded that he heard the kid as well. Squires surrounded the building, trying to find some way to break through and murder the family.

Luckily, it appeared some kind of barrier surrounded said building. For how long, though...

'Long enough." Magnus hoped as he flung another fireball through the air.

This fireball connected with a group of squires, instantly incinerating them. However, 4 groups quickly took their place.

'Their numbers and ferocity are what make these vermin dangerous!' Magnus lamented in his mind but pressed forward nonetheless.

Before his previous fireball had finished disintegrating the previous horde, Magnus was already summoning more fire in his hands. He walked through their falling smoldering corpses as he raised his hand, paying no mind to their ashes decorating his robe.

The new groups opened their mouth as they let out a shrill squeal, only to be answered with fire. 'We have to hurry.' Magnus thought as he walked through these corpses as well.

Behind him, he knew Sylus had turned into a whirlwind of arrows. The dwarf might be stupid and crass, but he had one hell of an aim.

Skree!!

A squire called out as it raised its arm, ready to slice Magnus's face wide open. Somehow, he had missed it—

Woosh!!

"Ye always need savin, eh," Sylus remarked as an arrow embedded itself into the squire, sending it flying off to the distance.

Magnus ignored the Dwarf, instead settling his thoughts on the few remaining hordes in front of the building. They were relentless in their efforts to break through the barrier as if the thought of some kid surviving drove them to a point past madness.

'Dark beasts... and to make me rely on a half-witted crass dwarf as well!'

Pure rage infused with his next blast. Flames interlaced with oxygen before the former extinguished the air entirely. A beautiful blue flame rushed forth, the epitome of an A-Rank's fire.

Unlike before, not even ashes remained as Magnus continued his advance toward the building. It wouldn't be long until they'd find the kid, and then...

"You coming, dwarf? Don't tell me that you're scared now!" Magnus sneered as he realized Sylus was hesitant to walk through the barrier.

It had just blocked even the assault of squires, disintegrating those who tried to break through. Therefore, most would find it reasonable that Sylus was not exactly keen on simply walking through the barrier.

However, Magnus had worked with magic all his life. And besides, how many years had they fought side by side, an enemy clan with the enemy clan? Stupid dwarf should know to trust him by now.

"I ain't scared. Just wouldn't be much use te the kid if I melted into goo." Sylus muttered as he carefully stepped over the squires on the ground, which, as he mentioned, were now just a puddle of goo.

He took a deep breath as he passed through the barrier, half expecting the evil Vakir to have tricked him. But no, as promised the barrier was harmless to them.

Magnus smiled at Sylus, a seemingly innocent smile that only someone who had lived with him for years would know was actually making fun of the dwarf.

"This barrier imposes a restriction on itself to only target squires, which thus increases its strength. A rather impressive display of magic though."

He turned forward, looking up a row of broken stairs. Ahead was a dark hall, and somewhere at the edge he knew he'd find the boy and at least his mom.

'I only detect 1 magic source... the boy I'm assuming.'

Even though it was incredulous that a mere kid had such mastery over barriers, Magnus knew that was the most likely explanation. He likely screamed right as he erected the barrier.

A soft gasp escaped Magnus's lips as a dark thought crossed his mind. One that he hoped wasn't real.

...

Even though Magnus was the first to climb the stairs, taking special care to watch for any broken steps, Sylus was the one who found them first. It turned out that the magic he had first detected was simply leftover aura placed on a doll.

A bloody doll.

Magnus gave one look around the room, quickly noting the affectations of a young girl and puddle of blood.

"I found them!" Sylus called, quickly followed with a harsh and high-pitched hush. The boy.

Magnus closed his eyes for just a second as he shook his head. However, the image did nothing but stay. Steadying his composure, Magnus left the room.

As he walked down the dark and empty hall, Magnus felt a stark increase in dark energy. It was like 1 second, the hall was empty, and the next, it was flooded.

'Squires.' Magnus thought, hurrying even though he knew the barrier should still be standing. Unless the boy had become too complacent...

"Put the barrier back up!!! Boy, put the barrier—"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!!!" The boy screamed back, though he didn't replace the barrier.

Why?!

Why?!

"Put it back!!!"

"I'm sorry, Mom... I'm sorry I'm so weak... sis is gone now, for real..."

Magnus walked in to find a boy covered in blood, holding his hand down on a dead mother's stomach as he held her body gently and tried to stop the bleeding. He was far too terrified to put the barrier back up and...

Skree!!!

Squires rang out cries of death as they struck the building, instantly destroying its structural integrity in its entirety.
