Chapter 955: Ning Shen

Mrs. Ning, who had been watching Ning Gui with a mix of helplessness and amusement, now showed a hint of concern.
Gu Yang, close to Ning Gui, could sense her unease. Ning Gui seemed visibly intimidated by the newcomer.
The man chuckled and addressed Ning Gui, “Gui, it’s been so long since we last met. Why don’t you call me ‘brother’ anymore?”
Ning Gui’s gaze met his, and she instinctively shrank further into her scarf. “Brother.”
Gu Yang quickly realized the identity of the newcomer—he was Ning Shen, the heir of one of the four aristocratic families.
Ning Shen was the son of the Ning family’s first wife, while Mrs. Ning was his father’s second wife. Although Ning Gui was a daughter of the Ning family, she had been brought into Mrs. Ning’s family after her mother’s remarriage, making her Ning Shen’s stepsister.
Despite being the heir, Ning Shen had effectively taken control of the entire Ning family at a young age. Rumors surrounded him, depicting him as ruthless and unfeeling, having placed his father, Family Head Ning, under house arrest and eliminated any uncles or brothers who opposed him.
The only one left was her younger sister, Ning Gui, who had no inheritance rights.
“Miss Gu Yang, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you,” Ning Shen said, his fox-like eyes meeting Gu Yang’s with a hint of a smile.
Gu Yang found Ning Shen’s gaze a bit unsettling. Despite her own fame as an online celebrity and top student, she felt that Ning Shen’s interest in her was more than just casual.
It was clear to her that he was scheming, unfathomable, and potentially dangerous.
As Ning Shen extended his hand toward her, Gu Yang was about to shake it out of courtesy, saying, “Hello.”
At that moment, Xiao Yize stepped in, grabbing Ning Shen’s hand and positioning himself protectively in front of Gu Yang. With a friendly smile, he asked, “When did you return to the country?”
Although Ning Shen was a prominent figure and had been invited to the Xiao family’s banquet, he had been recuperating overseas and had not attended the event until now.
He arrived midway through the banquet.
Ning Shen turned his gaze to Xiao Yize, his eyes deep and his smile slightly playful. “I came straight here as soon as the plane landed. I wanted to congratulate you on finding your biological sister.”
Despite the fact that this sister was lost and found again, there’s no need to hide her from me. I assure you, I won’t harm Sister Gu Yang.”
Xiao Yize gave a slight, guarded smile. “Young Master Ning, you must be joking. My sister is quite shy around strangers, and I wouldn’t want you to startle her, especially with the rumors circulating about you.” He shifted slightly to allow Gu Yang to be partially visible but continued to shield her with his presence.
Gu Yang observed silently as Xiao Yize spoke with an unwavering calmness. She could sense, however, that Xiao Yize was quite wary of Ning Shen.
Ning Shen remained unfazed by the comment. He simply smiled and replied, “It seems you are indeed protective of your sister.”
“After all, I have only one sister. Young Master Ning, you also have just one sister, Miss Ning Gui. I trust you can understand what it means to protect a sibling,” Xiao Yize said, making a subtle point about shared experiences.
Xiao Yize glanced at Ning Gui, who instinctively shrank back, clearly uncomfortable under the attention of so many people.
Mrs. Ning’s face paled, and she moved to shield Ning Gui behind her.
Gu Yang sensed the tension between Xiao Yize and Ning Shen—it felt as though they were subtly threatening each other.
At that moment, Ning Shen’s attention shifted to Gu Jin, who was standing beside Xiao Yize. His eyes darkened slightly with surprise before he flashed a smile and extended his hand. “Miss Gu Jin, it’s been a while since we last met in Continent M. I didn’t expect to see you here.”
