Chapter 27: Chapter 27 Awakening in Another World_1
Bull Head chuckled, “Congratulations, you’re about to be reborn. As soon as the little girl’s soul leaves, you must quickly take her place.”
Qian Yixiu felt no joy and said with pity, “The poor child, so young to die.”
Ma Mian replied, “She’s lucky. In her next life, she’ll be a powerful woman, destined to be a CEO.”
Oh, if that’s the case, then it’s indeed enviable.
While they were speaking, a crowd burst into the yard, “Brother Sangui, it’s terrible, Manjiang’s wife and Xiu’er have tumbled down the hillside.” Then the crowd rushed into the main hall, and Qian Sangui quickly staggered out with his crutch.
Little Qian Yixiu had just been brought into the house by a man, when a rope hooked her soul out of her body. Qian Yixiu was still in shock when she felt a push from behind and then passed out.
When she woke up again, she was lying in bed with people talking nearby.
Old woman Qian was scolding someone, “…our family is already struggling to get by, why save her? Little Xiu’er was saved, after all, she is one of our own Old Qian family. But why bother with that idiot? She’s useless and flirts around—an ideal candidate for death. You’ve brought so much famine upon us for her sake, even having her treated at Baohe Hall in the county, and buying such expensive medicine… Oh, my poor Sangui, how did you marry such a wasteful wife who doesn’t know how to live properly.”
Lady Wu cried, “Yueyue is Manjiang’s wife, the mother of Jinwa and Xiu’er. How could I stand by and watch her die?”
“Humph, you can’t bear to see her die, but can bear to watch the whole family starve? My San’er is so weak, Jinwa is growing, and Auntie Xia still hasn’t found a family. Tell me, with so much debt your family owes, how are they going to live?” She cried again, “Sangui is in difficulty now, and he has invested all his money into his business. The little savings we old folks had, we’ve also lent to them. Now I don’t have any money either, and occasionally when Xiang Niang gives me a few coins, most go into Jinwa’s mouth. Even if I want to help you, I can’t spare any money to do so.”
Qian Yeejin came in from outside with a bowl of water for Old woman Qian, saying, “Great-grandma, have a drink of water—it’s sweetened.” After seeing Old woman Qian took a sip, she added, “Please, Great-grandma, don’t scold Granny anymore. My sister and I have already lost our father. If we lose our mother too, how can we go on living?”
Old woman Qian wanted to say that they would be better off without a mother but seeing Jinwa’s puckered lips as though she was about to cry, she held back.
Before she left, she still took out a dozen or so coins from her purse, “This money is for San’er and Jinwa to buy eggs and nourish themselves. Don’t you dare use it on that idiot.”
Qian Yixiu, now with the memories of her predecessor, pieced together the whole story from the conversation she just heard between Old woman Qian and Lady Wu.
Mother and daughter had been deceived by Fan Erhei who led them out by claiming that Qian Yeejin had fallen down the hill. Cheng Yue and little Qian Yixiu, two delicate souls, panicked upon hearing this. Although they were timid, the concern for their loved ones prevailed, and they followed him out.
Their home was isolated, and Fan Erhei led them toward the base of the hill behind their yard. Not daring to venture westward, he took a direct route to the fork between Xijing Mountain and Xishi Mountain. When Fan Erhei saw that there was no one around and trees and large rocks provided cover, he began to utter filthy words and made advances on Cheng Yue. Cheng Yue, who disliked people getting close to her, let alone this dirty, dark man, screamed and pulled Qian Yixiu as they tried to flee, resulting in both tumbling down the hillside.
Even though Cheng Yue was simple-minded, her instinct was to protect Qian Yixiu, holding her daughter tightly to her chest as they rolled down the slope.
Fan Erhei wanted to take advantage of the now unconscious Cheng Yue, but just then, the Xie Huzi couple happened by and yelled loudly. Startled, Fan Erhei ran off, and the Xie Huzi couple hurried down the slope, carrying Cheng Yue and little Qian Yixiu back home.
Although little Yixiu was protected by Cheng Yue and the slope wasn’t too steep, that day was just destined for her demise. The slope they rolled down happened to have a waterhole formed over the years, and Yixiu, tragically and unfortunately, landed headfirst into the waterhole. Moreover, facedown and having fainted, she drowned like that.
Cheng Yue, however, was severely injured with a hole in her forehead that bled continuously. Her left arm was fractured, and her body sustained several other bruises. Doctor Xie didn’t dare to treat her, and she had to be sent to Baohe Hall in the county.
Because of this, Lady Wu spent the last of the family’s savings and borrowed another six hundred wen, which only added insult to injury for the already impoverished third wife of the Qian family. This was still thanks to the kindness of Old Master Zhang from Baohe Hall, who didn’t charge them the consultation fee; otherwise, it would have cost even more.
Although Yixiu didn’t suffer serious external injuries, she had inhaled water into her lungs. Coupled with the original owner’s weak constitution and the shock, she had been unconscious until now when she finally awoke.
Yixiu turned her head and saw her young mother’s pale face. Her mother’s head was wrapped in a bandage, and her blue-black hair was scattered on the pillow like a beautiful sleeping lotus, quietly lying there.
Yixiu felt that her young mother was like a lotus seed from Yaochi Pool, blown by the wind to the mortal world, taking root and sprouting, flowering and bearing fruit here. She didn’t know what experiences her mother had had before to drift around the countryside with such a stunningly beautiful appearance, dazed and foolish. Nor did she know what good deeds her mother had done in a previous life to have met such a kind family to cherish and protect her. Otherwise, she didn’t know how pitiful she would have been.
The handsome little father had most likely passed away, and it would be over a decade before Yijin came into his own. What could be done with the household now? Poverty wasn’t to be feared; leading the entire family out of poverty toward prosperity was the best ability of a woman who had traversed time. However, in this survival of the fittest feudal society, protecting a mentally deficient beauty from being bullied was a challenge with quite a high degree of difficulty.
The Old Qian Family was powerless and insignificant villagers, and their third branch was even weaker. Now she had to find an opportunity to establish a relationship with a powerful household to make herself stronger, protecting her family from being disgraced by evil people. And then to get her hands on those things she saw as valuable to sell them, buy a big courtyard, hire some servants, and hide her beautiful mother deeply.
Of course, she had to ensure that her beautiful young mother wouldn’t be harmed before she became powerful herself.
However, herself currently being just a little country girl, it was impossible, no matter what she did, to cling to a powerful family. She still had to employ a “roundabout salvation” strategy, first getting in touch with the Zhang family, whose status was not high but who had close dealings with the powerful. She knew a secret about their family, which if leveraged successfully, could establish a connection.
She also had to find a way to connect with the steward of Song Family Manor, being close at hand. With their support, at least she wouldn’t fear the local idlers and bullies.
Yixiu reached out and touched Cheng Yue’s face, calling out, “Mother.”
Instantly, the warmth of maternal affection permeated her chest, and the tenderness of being tightly held and protected while tumbling down the slope surged in her heart again. Yixiu’s eyes moistened as she gently stroked her young mother’s cheek.
“Yixiu, are you awake?” exclaimed Lady Wu with joy, “My dear grandchild, it’s good that you’re awake. I’ll go and get you a bowl of chicken soup to drink.” With that, she left.
Yijin had just escorted Great-grandma back and, seeing that her sister had woken up, rushed over. Her pretty little face came close, and she choked up, “Sister, you finally woke up, but mother hasn’t yet. It’s all brother’s fault for not protecting mother and sister well enough…”
