Chapter 90: It’s Not A Cage

Ningyan was grateful Wuhen hadn’t woken by the time he made his decision.

He would say goodbye to Yunyi first. Then he would go straight to Lan Meishan.

His flute rested at his waist, his white-and-gold robes light enough for swift movement. The soul amplifier pill was tucked away safely.

After flashing the permission sigil to the guards, he stepped into the manor and headed straight for Yunyi’s chamber.

She was speaking to a servant when he arrived.

The moment her eyes met his, they widened.

"A-Yan!" Yunyi crossed the room at once and pulled him into a hug while the servant exited the chamber.

"Ayi," Ningyan murmured.

As soon as she released him, he met her gaze meaningfully. Yunyi understood immediately. She lifted her hand, and an orange glow spread across the chamber walls and sealed the entrance.

Ningyan exhaled deeply and took her hands.

"I’m leaving, Ayi," he said quietly. "There’s a bounty on my head now. I can’t afford to stay, not with a war brewing. It could start at any moment."

To his relief, Yunyi smiled.

"Yes. Yes, yes," she said warmly. "It’s about time."

Her expression was so open, so relieved, that Ningyan felt lighter just looking at her. Like he could finally breathe.

"Yes and the spirit mate chain," he continued. "I’ve decided to transfer it to someone else. I have to go now. The sun is already setting—"

He stopped.

Yunyi’s smile had vanished.

"What’s wrong?" he asked.

"You can’t jump from one cage to another, A-Yan," she said, her tone suddenly firm.

Slowly, he released her hands. "It’s not a cage," he said. "It’s safe. No one will die. I won’t have regrets. Besides, I’m interested in him. I—"

"Oh, A-Yan..." Tears filled Yunyi’s eyes. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him again, rubbing his back slowly.

"I’m so sorry," she whispered. "I mean well. I truly do. I want you to succeed. And to succeed, you must sometimes do things you don’t like."

Ningyan blinked, confusion tightening in his chest. "No, I—"

He tried to pull away.

Pain exploded at the side of his neck. It was sharp, brief. Then dulled into nothing.

The world went numb.

His limbs stopped responding. His voice vanished before he could even gasp.

Ningyan’s vision blurred as the strength drained from his body, and he collapsed into Yunyi’s arms, unable to feel, unable to move, unable to speak.

"I’m sorry." Yunyi released him at once and guided him to the bed, laying him down carefully as if he were something fragile.

Panic flooded Ningyan’s chest.

His eyes widened as he tried to move. Anything. His fingers. His legs. His voice.

Nothing responded. Not even a tremor. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Terror clawed its way up his throat.

He tried to scream, to demand answers, to ask what she had done to him but the words stayed trapped in his head, echoing uselessly.

’Undo it. Please.’

’Let me go! I need to go to Meishan.’

"You’ll be just fine alone," Yunyi said softly. "No more traps."

She smiled and brushed her fingers along his cheek.

Ningyan’s eyes burned with fury.

"I’m doing this for you, A-Yan," she continued gently. "Finding someone else you think might be better to transfer the chain isn’t any better."

He understood her reasoning. He really did.

But this... This method of pinning him down, stripping him of choice, reducing him to something helpless and silent. It ignited a fear and rage he had never felt before.

Yunyi withdrew her hand and stood, her movements calm, unhurried. She walked back to her shelves.

"When you left last night," she said casually, "I found what I was looking for."

Ningyan watched her with wide, furious eyes. The only part of him still capable of movement.

She returned holding a pair of faintly glowing gloves and slipped them on with practiced ease.

"This is a one-time use," Yunyi said. "But it’ll do its job."

Her gaze lowered to him. "Once you’re far enough from Wuhen, he’ll die."

Ningyan’s heart shattered.

’No. I don’t want him to die.’

’Please... there’s another way.’

’Let me go to Lan Meishan!! Please!!’

His screams never left his mind.

Yunyi sat beside him again, offering a small smile. The kind that once warmed him to his core.

Now, it stirred nothing but bottomless anger.

"Now, I can’t see it, but..." Yunyi lifted her hand, hovering just below his throat, her expression thoughtful, almost curious.

Then her fingers closed.

The glove flared.

The spirit mate chain was ripped into visibility, glowing violently as if dragged out from beneath his skin.

Agony detonated through Ningyan’s veins.

His body jerked, every nerve screaming, but no sound left his mouth. He couldn’t move. Couldn’t cry out. Couldn’t even curl his fingers.

All he could do was stare at Yunyi with burning, furious tears spilling down his cheeks.

She met his gaze and smiled, melancholy and gentle.

Then she pulled.

This time, the chain was swallowed in a blinding white-gold radiance. The glow pulsed once, twice, before collapsing inward and being overtaken completely by red gold.

Yan Wuhen’s presence.

Yunyi’s lips curved upward, satisfied.

Ningyan’s heart slammed wildly in his chest.

Tears streamed freely now, his vision blurring.

He shouldn’t have come here. He should have gone straight to Lan Meishan.

Now Wuhen was going to die... because of him and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

The gloves dissolved into light in Yunyi’s hands.

The chain vanished.

Everything was done.

She looked pleased with herself.

"I know you’re angry," Yunyi whispered, gently wiping his tears with her fingers. "But you won’t regret this later. You’re still young, A-Yan. You have a long road ahead."

Her voice softened further. "So don’t cry for the beast who imprisoned you. Okay?"

Ningyan glared at her with everything he had left.

If he could move, he would have torn her apart.

If he could speak, he would have screamed.

But she didn’t undo anything.

She simply flicked her fingers.

An orange glow leapt forward, sank into his forehead. And the world went black.
