Chapter 94: A Sign Of War

Back at Yan Wuhen’s manor, Lan Meishan stood over Lan Shiyu’s unconscious body.

Shiyu lay sprawled across the ruined ground, bloodied and unmoving, one arm still very much missing. Lan Meishan rested his hands on his knees as he stared down at him, disappointment written plainly across his face.

"...Are you actually unconscious?" he muttered. "You can’t just drag me out and then fall asleep because of a light attack you couldn’t dodge."

He clicked his tongue. "And your arm’s still gone. I guess it’ll grow back. Probably."

A portal rippled open behind him.

Lan Tianlong stepped through, his gaze sweeping over the scene before pausing on Lan Shiyu’s condition. Then settling on Lan Meishan with sharp interest.

"...Are you the other one?" he asked.

Lan Meishan gave him a flat look. "What do you think?"

Lan Tianlong straightened. "You’re coming with me. I’ll speak to Yunlai about disowning you for healing the nine-tailed fox."

Lan Meishan shook his head lazily. "I don’t think Lan Meishan would like that."

"And what about what you want?" Lan Tianlong pressed. "We can seal him away and put you in his place."

Lan Meishan actually considered it for a moment.

Then he shook his head again.

"No. I don’t want that." His gaze drifted away, bored. "I want the pretty phoenix. You can take that piece of trash instead." He nodded toward Shiyu. "Just make sure he grows his arm back."

With that, he turned away and crouched to pick up his broken glasses. He stared at the cracked lenses for a long second, expression dulled and distant.

Lan Tianlong watched his back in silence.

Then he bent down, lifted Lan Shiyu’s unconscious body, and stepped back through the portal. It sealed shut behind them.

Gone.

Lan Meishan finally turned and walked toward Wuhen, Qinghe, and Wuyin.

All three were watching him. Except Wuhen, who was staring blankly at what remained of his shattered manor.

Lan Meishan lifted a hand and gave the nine-tailed foxes a casual wave. "Pleasant meeting you."

Then he stopped directly in front of Wuhen, stepping close enough to invade his space. Wuhen didn’t seem to mind.

Lan Meishan leaned in, face inches from his. "I thought you’d be dead by now."

"You’re the fun side." Wuhen’s ears perked instantly. He reached out and grabbed Meishan’s arm but Meishan reacted at once, raising his hand to strike.

Wuhen caught that wrist.

Meishan yanked himself free and stepped back sharply, eyes gleaming as he tilted his head.

"Fun side?" he echoed.

Wuhen stepped toward him again.

Meishan immediately retreated another step. "Meishan said to stay away from Yan Wuhen at all times," he said flatly. "He doesn’t like you. So, no touching."

Wuhen’s mouth pulled into a frown. "...You like the boring side?"

"He is me and I am him. I was born from torture, so he was here first."

Wuhen stared at him for a brief moment, expression unreadable. Then he turned away and walked toward Qinghe.

"It’s time to find Yan’er." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Qinghe blinked. "Wuhen.. let’s go to Fire City first. You almost died. That means he’s very far from the academy. And look around. The academy is destroyed."

Wuhen didn’t seem to hear her at first. His face twisted with barely contained anger. Then he exhaled slowly, forcing himself to calm down.

"...Fine," he said tightly. "Fire City first."

Lan Meishan had already left the manor.

A portal bloomed open beneath his feet and carried him to the Celestial Lake. He stood at its edge, staring down into the dark water. The lake reflected the stormy night sky, but moonlight pierced through just enough for him to see his own reflection.

The calm, gentle Meishan stared back at him.

"We need to find Su Ningyan," the reflection said quietly. "He might be in danger."

"The fox broke the bond," the other voice replied. "Are you happy about that?"

Meishan sighed. "I’m not happy. I’m not sad. I just need to find him."

"Well," the voice mused, "we’ve been disowned. That means we have all the time in the world." A pause. "Though I’ll miss your mother. She was nice."

The reflection’s expression softened, sadness flickering across his face.

"What do you want?" he asked.

"I want him," the voice said smoothly. "Just as much as you do. We can share."

The reflection frowned. "I don’t trust you with him. You’ll hurt him."

"He’ll like it." A wild smile curved across Meishan’s lips. One that didn’t belong to the reflection.

The reflection looked away. "...Let’s find him first."

"I am your deepest desire, Meishan," the voice murmured. "I can help you with him in so many ways."

The reflection sighed, tired but resolute. "Like I said, first, we find him. Earth City isn’t safe for us. We should go to Water City."

Meishan didn’t argue.

Instead, he took a few quick, almost playful steps forward and leapt into the lake.

Emerald light exploded around his body, scales forming as he shifted back into his serpent form. The massive creature dove deep beneath the surface, vanishing into the dark waters of the Celestial Lake.

Meanwhile, back at the academy’s main grounds, students were still evacuating safely through the portals. Jun Haoxuan walked past them in silence, his expression grim as he headed toward the main hall of the Celestial Beast Academy.

The hall was half-collapsed now.

Broken pillars and shattered stone littered the floor. At its center stood Headmaster Fang Lingbo, surrounded by a group of teachers. They all looked tense, speaking in hushed, urgent tones until they noticed Jun Haoxuan.

Their conversation stopped.

Jun Haoxuan met their gazes, his eyes sharp and serious. "Are there any reports of deaths?"

"Thankfully, no," one of the teachers answered quickly.

"This battle is a sign of war," another said grimly. "The academy should be closed for a while."

"Yes," a third added. "This isn’t an ordinary conflict. It involves the realms themselves. You saw their power."

The teachers continued speaking among themselves, anxiety written clearly across their faces. They had every right to be afraid.

Jun Haoxuan said nothing as he listened.

Lan Tianheng had been powerful. Terrifyingly so. Experienced. Cultivating at the same stage as him, yet far more ruthless. Jun Haoxuan could admit that much.

But he would surpass him. Not by tainting himself with demon qi or beast qi.

He would walk the divine path and one day, he would be the one to take Lan Tianheng’s head.

Jun Haoxuan stepped forward, stopping in front of Fang Lingbo.

"Headmaster, I agree the academy should be shut down for a time," he said evenly. "But not permanently."

Fang Lingbo cleared his throat, straightening as he turned to face the gathered teachers. His voice rose, formal and authoritative.

"Due to the internal and external conflicts among the beasts, and the losses incurred today, the Celestial Beast Academy will be closed temporarily. Other academy institutions across the realms will do the same, to prevent further casualties."

He spoke as though the decision had been his all along.

Jun Haoxuan merely nodded. Then he turned away and walked off, the ruins of the academy stretching silently behind him.
