Under the vampire Lord's protection-Chapter 60: Not the most common
Chapter 60: Not the most common
With those thoughts in mind, Silas stood guard, overseeing the maids that flipped Arabella's room on its head in search of a clue or a trace of witchcraft that might lead back to the culprit.
All the while Arabella remained quiet by his side, still clutching at Nerina's covered gown as her green gemstones darted from left to right following the figures that moved from one place to another through the room.
"Oh, dear!" Ada's voice broke both the silence as well as the rhythm established by the maids.
The woman had picked pieces of the ball gown that Mr Kallum had tailored with much care for Arabella.
The young woman's heart sank lower at the desolate sight of such a fine piece. A gift she never even believed she deserved in the first place.
"Do not get distracted. Keep at your work,"
"Yes, Master!" they all sang almost in unison before returning to their task.
Yet another hour went by and not a hint of progress to show for it when Silas finally decided that he'd kept the maids busy for long enough.
"That is enough. You may put everything back where you found it and return to your usual chores," he said. Although, while the rest did as told, the vampire called for one out of the lot, "Ada, come here,"
"Yes!" she chirped, practically leaping his way.
"I'd like you to send a word to Morgana. The sooner she'll manage to be here the more handsomely she'll be compensated,"
"Understood," Ada said before scurrying out of the room. The young maid then returned in under five minutes of time, "It is done Master,"
"Good," he paused for a second, watching as Ada resumed tidying the room, "Morgana should help us set the record straight, but until then you can't be left alone, I am afraid," he turned slightly towards Arabella.
Hearing that, Ada who'd been working less than three feet away had perked up her ears before straightening her stance, "I've got the rest of the day to myself. I volunteer my time for the task if needed, Master," she grinned.
In the calmest of manners, Silas raised a hand and spoke, "That won't be necessary. She will remain in my company,"
Ada's eyes widened a tad at his reply whereas Edna peered like a meerkat from her hiding spot which was the bathroom.
She'd spent the entire time avoiding Arabella's and Silas' gaze altogether. A fact that Arabella thought quite odd at first, believing Edna wouldn't miss an opportunity to glare at her, although on second thought, she concluded that Silas' presence might have deterred her from doing just that.
Surely, Edna wouldn't be as daft as to resort to her nasty behavior right in front of him...
However, it seemed that Silas' decision to keep her company himself, had been the drop that flooded the dam for her.
Even so, Edna bit her tongue and made no remarks on the matter.
The maids carried on until everything had been put back in its original place before exiting one after the other with Ada and Edna walking at the end of the line.
The former offered Arabella an apologetic look while the latter had a demeanor that chased every ounce of consolation away from Arabella.
"Shut the door behind yourself," Silas ordered Edna.

And thus, Edna's twisted visage had been the last glimpse of her Arabella had caught.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Arabella hastened towards the bathroom without a word to Silas.
She hadn't considered it but the moment her eyes had landed on Edna when she came out of the bathroom, an invisible slap had struck her across the face; what if she'd removed any trace of her crimes to protect herself?
"What is the matter?" he stood by the doorframe.
"No... No, nothing,"
"Then hand me the dress and follow along," Silas took the dress from her hand and walked towards the bed where he spread its fabric on the surface.
From the belt hidden beneath his long vest, he picked a small pouch in which he gently dipped his fingers after opening it.
He glanced over at Arabela then muttered, "One dose should be enough,"
Silas seemed to take a pinch of its content before raising his hand back only to sprinkle a sort of powder all over the dress.
The young woman could not believe her eyes, as the gown appeared to shrink right before them.
"Shrinking and engorgement charms are a must," he said, "Though they are to be used with care," he added.
"Is it witchcraft?" slowly and without blinking, Arabella moved around the edge of the bed in order to contemplate the dress from every side.
"Fairy dust," Silas placed the pouch back around his belt, "It is not the rarest of magic, but not the most common either," he paused, "You'll see if it fits you this way or if it still needs tweaking,"
"Thank you," her eyes welled up in tears, a dreamy smile on her features, "Truly, thank you,"
He thought he'd never hear those words out of her mouth. The vampire had almost forgotten he was doing her a favor and taken by the amusing expression on her, he'd also forgotten his rest.
Silas finally cleared his throat upon regaining his... Senses, "You shall accompany me to the map room until Morgana shows herself," He'd started walking towards the door, but then halted, "Bring the dress along with you. It'd be a shame if something were to happen to it as well. It may not seem like it, but it is important to me,"
