Chapter 102: THE TRUTH

If River’s targets were only Aubrey and Arlo, she didn’t need to take this long to make a move and to hide herself, unless she was badly injured.

Something was not right.

He was the one who taught River how to make a plan, but now he couldn’t even guess what was in her mind. He didn’t know whether he had to be happy or annoyed by her...

Actually, the fact that Arthur couldn’t find anything related to Arlo and Aubrey was because of Jack’s intervention.

Jack had tampered with the record that Arthur received in order to cover the traces of Arlo and Aubrey.

Arthur was a step behind in this case because Jack had thought about it first and made a move. Now he knew the truth.

Still, he needed a confirmation about it since the truth was very wild and was hard to discern. He called for Arlo to come home and meet him in his study room.

"Do you call me, Father?" Arlo entered the room, but a book flew towards him.

It almost hit his face if he didn’t dodge it quickly. He knew he was in trouble, but he was not sure what kind of trouble he was in.

Therefore, he had expected this kind of ’warm welcome’ from Jack.

"Tell me the truth," Jack said, his voice deep and dark. He looked at his son with a condescending look as if he wished Arlo would disappear from his life.

He was very disappointed in Arlo, and the sight of him made his blood boil.

"Tell me the truth about what happened with River."

Arlo dared to look his father right in the eyes. "I don’t know what you mean, Father. I have told you and Arthur about what actually happened. I don’t know."

Lie was a second language for them. They wouldn’t be one of the most feared families in this line of work if they couldn’t master this language.

Either Arlo, River, or anyone who was close to the main family was very fluent to talk in this language, so it was hard for you to distinguish whether they were telling the truth or they were lying to your face.

Jack grabbed an ashtray this time and hurled it at Arlo, yet he caught it before it could create any damage and put it down on the table next to him calmly.

"Father, if you keep throwing things, I will not understand; what are you talking about? Can we have a normal conversation here?"

"Don’t try to be a smartass with me!" Jake was so mad. He threw a dagger look at Arlo. "Tell me the truth about River, and don’t you dare lie to me! Do you think you can lie to my face when I am the one who taught you how to do that?!" Jack yelled loudly at him.

Meanwhile, Arlo didn’t even blink when he sat down calmly and waited for his father’s anger to cease down a bit so they could have a proper conversation.

Of course, this calmness pissed Jack so much; this son of his actually had the audacity to act like this.

"Father, I don’t understand. What are you talking about?"

Denied it until you couldn’t.

That was the principle that Jack taught Arlo. "You killed River!" he finally blurted it out. "I know you killed River! You killed her at the old bridge of Aspen!"

Still, Arlo didn’t have a change of expression. He looked at his father the same. "How can you make such a conclusion? There is no way I killed my own fiancé."

Hearing that, Jack actually laughed at the way Arlo tried to dodge the situation. "Arthur feels something is not right and has been looking for any evidence. He is suspicious that you and Aubrey have anything to do with River’s disappearance."

"Of course we are. Our mistake has caused this trouble. She ran away because of us."

"If you keep denying it, then I will let Arthur deal with you."

And then Jack told Arlo in detail what he had done to prevent Arthur from knowing the truth. All the things that Arlo and Aubrey said were actually lies.

"I told you if you do some shitty things, cover your traces well; but you didn’t even think Arthur would have actually looked into it. And now I should be the one who has to do the dirty job. You are a disappointment."

Jack walked towards Arlo. His son still had this same expression. He didn’t show any emotion. Jack then sat down across from him.

"Now tell me the truth, did you kill her?"

"I didn’t."

Jack was about to lash out at him because he kept denying it, yet Arlo then added an explanation.

"I didn’t kill River. Aubrey did."

"That wench killed her?!"

"I don’t appreciate it, Father. She is the mother of my child."

Jack scoffed, but he ordered Arlo to speak. "Explain in detail what happened."

Arlo briefed his father about what happened that fateful night; he only told his father about the important things. "I believed River survived the fall and the shot, and I am right about that."

And for the first time since Arlo entered the room, he had this small smile on the corner of his lips when the thought of River being still alive and breathing brought a little bit of joy and a big relief for him.

"The river, the bridge... the old bridge of Aspen." Jack then remembered something. "You burned the factory near the old bridge." That was not even a question, but a statement.

Jack didn’t need to ask to know what his crazy son had done, and Arlo didn’t waste their time by denying it. He admitted to it.

"I burned the factory so I would be able to put my people there to search for her body without causing any suspicion."

"You dumbass! You caused us tens of millions!" Jack was enraged.
