Chapter 103: ANGER AND MADNESS

"You, dumbass!" Jack felt like he wanted to beat Arlo up.

"At that time, there was still no sign of River, so I needed to add more people around the river to search for her."

However, Arlo couldn’t draw attention to it. If he added more people, Arthur would be alarmed, and he would be suspicious of him.

That was why the burning factory was a perfect reason for Arlo to send his people to the river, since the factory was close to it.

But now, he didn’t need to do that anymore. River was still alive, and the search for her had stopped.

"Have you found her?"

"No, not yet; but I will." Arlo had tried to pry more about what Olivia knew, but the only information that he got was about Hazel, and she was the key for him to find River, because weirdly enough, River and Hazel were connected.

"You need to find her quickly before Arthur."

"I will." Arlo intended to do so.

"Good." Jack nodded his head. "You need to find River first and kill her before she can kill you," he said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Arlo knitted his brows. "I am not going to kill her."

And now Jack’s anger exploded again. "Do you think she will come in peace to you? Someone like her will only care about one thing." Jack leaned over. His gaze was sharp enough to make you recoil, but Arlo was immune to that. He had been raised with such a gaze. "She wants revenge! She is going to kill you and Aubrey!"

Of course, Arlo knew about that. He had expected it, but even more, he was looking forward to it. He wanted River to come to meet him; whatever her intention was, it didn’t matter as long as he could see her again.

"I am not going to kill her."

"Are you stupid!? What are you going to do if you don’t kill her!? Do you think she will forgive you!? Do you really think she will accept you back!? What a moron! I didn’t raise you like this. I raised you better than this! Use your brain!"

"I am not going to kill her." That was the only thing that Arlo firmly said.

"And then what are you going to do? Continue with your romance? If you really want her, you should have stayed away from her sister!"

Arlo gritted his teeth. "River is barren." He used this excuse when he started his affair with Aubrey.

He used this same excuse and felt justified at that time, but in this moment, the excuse sounded very lame and laughable even for himself when he said that.

"All of us know about that. I have talked with you about it before and given you some solutions..."

Arlo cut Jack off. "You wanted Michael to carry on with the family bloodline. You don’t care whether my woman is barren or not because you have your other son to carry the family name."

"Stupid!" Jack slammed his fist against the table. "River is still useful, you dipshit! If you don’t do this thing and cause trouble, we will still have her."

"Yeah, we will still have her because she will accomplish every mission given to her, which means a lot of money for our families." Arlo looked at Jack with a critical look. "You only see her as an asset."

Jack crossed his arms. His expression changed; he leaned his back against the sofa, and there was this amused smile that curled on his lips.

"Are you going to tell me that you like her? Is that why you are like this? Because you love her." Jack shook his head; he gave his son a condescending look. "You act like the world has come to an end. I can’t believe it. Michael can do better with women than you."

Arlo gave his father a sharp look, yet Jack continued with his patronizing tone.

"Your brother can have three to four women at the same time, but you can’t even handle two? I did you wrong in how I raised you when you couldn’t even control a woman."

And then Jack stood up; he went to the desk and got his phone, and then he dialed someone.

"Do you know that Aubrey has been causing trouble too because you don’t pay attention to her? Do you know that Arthur will beat your ass if something happens to his daughter?"

Arlo knew about that, but somehow, he couldn’t stand her. She was going to be fine. His focus was on finding River.

Both of them would be screwed if Arthur learned about it, and she had to understand that.

"You are a disappointment. If you want to ruin your life, don’t affect my business." Jack made a phone call to one of his men. "Look into Hazel Rose and find where River is; after that, kill her."

Arlo was incensed.

The room temperature suddenly dropped, as if all the warmth was sucked out. You could feel a strong killing intention exuded from him upon hearing what his father said.

Jack had given the order to kill River.

"You are going to take back that order," Arlo said sternly. He walked slowly towards Jack. It almost felt like a predator lurking for its prey.

Jack then put away the phone and faced his son. There was no warmth in his eyes, either.

Jack was old, but he reeked of a lot of experience. He was sly and cunning, and Arlo couldn’t even be compared to him yet.

"And then what are you going to do if I don’t take back my order?" Jack challenged him.

"Should I tell Arthur about what you have been doing behind his back?" Arlo asked calmly, but this was the calm before the storm; you couldn’t trust this type of calmness.

Just like what Arlo did earlier, Jack denied it too.

"Father, I know what kind of deal you have with them." Arlo narrowed his eyes. "You accepted the hit for the Leighton family when you told Arthur to cancel it." Arlo stopped walking right in front of his father.

Actually, Arthur gave it a shot, but his people were not adequate, and the plan was reckless since he couldn’t focus on it as he spent his attention on the disappearance of River.

There was this last attempt that Arthur tried, but he failed miserably.

He didn’t even do any damage to the Leighton family; if anything, he lost a few men, and now their target was alerted. freewebnøvel.coɱ

The client was not happy with the Lozens.

However, this hit for the Leighton family did not come from the same person. The order to kill one of the members of the Leighton family came from a different person.

Yet, Arthur still failed.

Jack told Arthur to cancel all the orders for the Leighton family, yet he accepted the order to give it to another organization.

"Lozen has lost its precious weapon, and without her, it will shake their foundation." Jack scowled. "Now their weapon will destroy them, and I have a strong feeling about it."

In other words, Jack believed that River was going back to ruin the Lozens and the Barlowe family to take her revenge.

"That’s why we need to kill her."

"No. Take back your order."

"She will kill you."

"She will not be able to kill me."

Jack laughed condescendingly. "You are delusional." He shook his head.

Arlo didn’t budge. "Father, you are going to take back the order to kill River."

"Or what? Are you going to babble to Arthur? Are you not happy by only ruining the Lozen family? But you also want to ruin your own family?"

The cooperation between the Barlowe family and the Lozen family had run for years. They were very close with each other; therefore, what Jack had done to get an order and give it to the other organization could be seen as a betrayal.

It was very clear the organization was actually the Lozens’ rival. It was a form of betrayal. And they knew very well how Arthur saw betrayal.

He hated a traitor with a passion.

"I am not going to ruin this family. This decision is in your hands." His voice lacked warmth as he gave his father the option. "This is your call, Father. You always like it whenever you are in charge. But I will stand by what I said. Take back the order. I will deal with River."

"She’s going to kill you."

"She can’t kill me." Arlo was very confident.

"Don’t think too highly of yourself. I can read people, Arlo, and I know if River is serious about her target, she will be able to do it. She is the best assassin for a reason."

"I know her more than you do. River loves me; she will not hurt me." And he believed what he said.

After a full minute of glaring at each other, Jack finally picked up his phone and aborted his last order. "I just want you to know one thing, son: don’t let me have my own child’s funeral."

He let Arlo decide what was best in this situation.

Laurel didn’t know what to do again.

This morning, she came to Carl’s bedroom because she needed him to get the final size for the suit that he would wear on Hazel and Ronan’s wedding day.

However, what she found shook her to the core; she actually found drugs under his pillow. Carl was still in the bathroom, taking a bath.

"What do you mean with this!" Laurel lashed out the moment Carl stepped out of the bathroom.
