Chapter 39: THEY WERE BEING FOLLOWED

To be honest, this was not Hazel’s first rodeo of being followed, and she could think of a dozen ways to deal with these annoying bastards; but Ranon saw her differently; she was not River, she was Hazel Rose.

His first instinct was to protect his future wife and their child in her womb. How sweet...

"Take a turn on this road; we can shake them off," Hazel instructed. She was not from this city, but she would come here often, so she knew her way around here.

"No, we will go to your home."

"And what are you going to do? Deal with them after?" Hazel raised her brows. It had been a while since she sprang into action; her body itched with the familiarity.

"No." Ranon made a phone call. "Someone else will deal with them."

"If you can deal with it yourself, why would you need someone else to do it?"

"If I can get rid of them without lifting my finger, why should I bother to deal with them?" Ranon retorted; he smirked at Hazel. "If the problem can be solved with money, it’s an easy problem. I don’t deal with something trivial like that."

Well, in a sense, he was right; Hazel hated to admit that. His logic was logical.

"Okay, fine then." Hazel shrugged her shoulders and then slouched back to her seat, turning on the music and relaxing.

This attitude confused Ranon. He glanced at her a few times, and Hazel could feel it until finally, ten minutes before they reached the Rose house, he spoke.

"How can you be so casual? You are not like anything that the report told me. What has changed?" Ranon glanced at the rearview mirror, making sure the car was still following him and his men were on the way.

"What did the report tell you? That I am a timid, little girl with no backbone?" Hazel couldn’t muster a lie about this. Her personality and the former Hazel’s were very different; they were like two sides of a coin. "People changed. People always changed. There is nothing to be surprised about."

"No." Ranon shook his head. "It is not only the change," he said. "People don’t change. Time only enhanced their true color. Are you always like this?"

"Probably."

"What triggered you?"

Hazel thought about it carefully and then used the moment that could justify her sudden change, the moment that ’triggered’ her.

"I realized that my brother had no qualms about using me. He literally sold me out to form a relationship with your family to get your support. I am sick of that; people like that need to taste their own medicine." Hazel then added, but it was more like she was talking to herself; it sounded like a sentimental statement from her. "I hate it when someone backstabs me, especially those who I consider family—people that are close to me."

Silence fell between them, and it stretched out. For a moment, they didn’t continue their conversation until suddenly Ranon stepped on the brake so hard that Hazel almost fell forward if it was not for her seatbelt and Ranon’s hand that pressed her body back to the seat.

"What the hell?" She glanced at his big hand that pressed against her breast; she widened her eyes and was about to lash out at him when she saw his grim expression. It was enough to stop herself and observe her surroundings.

In front of them, there were two cars that blocked their way.

"Well, I guess you can’t take me back home now." Hazel wanted to say that he should have taken the turn that she told him earlier, but she stopped herself. That sounded petty and unnecessary. "What are we going to do now?"

Their only escape was driving back, or they had to run them over, but Hazel was skeptical that they could do the second option. Those cars looked sturdy.

The way to the Rose house was rather quiet; this was not a common road, but then the distance from one house to the other was too far. Everyone in this area had their own world, divided by high walls around their property or a vast land.

"I hope your car is bulletproof," Hazel said when four men got out of the cars and then took out a gun from their waist. Things escalated quickly.

"It is," Ranon replied, but he started reversing the car, and as if right on cue, they opened fire. Thankfully, Ranon was right. His car was indeed bulletproof.

Two of them tried to aim at the tires, but they missed their chances. Seeing this, the four of them immediately went back inside the car and chased after Ranon.

"Do you have a gun?" Hazel asked; she glanced at the rearview mirrors, and now there were four cars chasing after them.

"No." Ranon glanced at her; she didn’t look worried as if this was not something that surprised her. As if she had been in this situation a few times, and it simply irritated her.

Hazel was indeed irritated because Ranon didn’t have a gun. "I told you that your life is in danger, right? But not only do you go out without a gun, but you also don’t even have a bodyguard to protect you." Hazel clicked her tongue. "You should know better how to protect yourself if someone told you that there was a bounty on your head, and the assassin family in this country is out for your head."

"Are you scolding me?" Ranon looked at her in disbelief as he swerved the car to the main road. "You only said that the Lozen family is after the Leightons, but not specifically me."

"You should know better."

"I know better," Ranon said coldly. He floored the acceleration, and Hazel was thrown back to her seat. She clenched her teeth when he drove the car at full speed on this empty road, while the other four followed them.

He couldn’t shake them off because this straight road offered nothing to distract them.

"Where are we going?" Hazel finally realized Ranon was baiting those four cars somewhere, but she couldn’t tell because instead of going to the bustling road, they went out of the city.

"Somewhere," Ranon replied lightly. He was ahead of the four cars, but he didn’t try to shake them off. He maintained the speed so he could lead them. "Now, start telling me the truth about you."

"We are being chased, and you want to listen to a story?"

"Start talking."

"I don’t know what you meant." Hazel glanced at Ranon; their main focus was now shifted. Those chasers didn’t bother them at all when they were tangled in this conversation. "If you thought you knew me, you were wrong. That’s all I can say."

"That doesn’t answer my question."

"I don’t have any obligations to answer your questions," Hazel said sternly. "Let’s stick to our deal and mind our own business."

For a moment, Hazel thought Ranon was going to be difficult. She could imagine that he demanded a clear answer from her.

She could understand why he was very curious. If she were him, she would be curious as well. She would want to know the other person that she was going to marry and why the description was not the same as the report said.

But there was no way she could explain what happened when she barely understood her unique situation herself.

"Fine."

Ranon didn’t bother to ask anymore, and Hazel was relieved that they could focus back on the people who chased after them and wanted to kill them without any scruples.

"Thank you, I appreciate that."

Hazel tried to look for their plate numbers and memorized them so she could look into it once they were safe.

For an hour, they were on the street; no one talked, and the only sound inside the car was the music that Hazel chose, while Ranon talked to someone on the other side of the phone.

And when Hazel started to get bored, Ranon finally went out of the main street and went into a small town near Talbar City.

They were heading towards an abandoned building, and suddenly Ranon stopped the car. Needless to say, they were immediately surrounded with nowhere to escape.

"I hope you really have a good plan about this." In her opinion, this was suicide unless Ranon had planned something. She narrowed her eyes and watched as the people emerged from the cars; guns were pointed at them.

Ranon’s car was bulletproof, but not with the tires, and they aimed them and immobilized the car.

As those people shot the tires, Ranon’s eyes fixed on Hazel. He found this disturbing due to the fact that the woman beside him didn’t even flinch. She looked mad instead of being scared.

If guns were pointed at you and you didn’t even look scared, Ranon wondered how she could be so nonchalant like that. It didn’t make sense; everything about her didn’t make sense.

"What now?" Hazel tilted her head and met his eyes when those people out there pointed their guns at them, trying to break the glass, gesturing for them to come out. There were at least twelve of them, and Hazel couldn’t figure out whether they came from the Lozen family or not.

"Watch."

As if on cue, a gunshot rang in the air, and all the chasers immediately took shelter behind their cars. Right before her eyes, Hazel watched them open fire: bullets were spilled, and bodies were dropped dead.

It almost felt like she was watching a live-action movie.
