Chapter 44: WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO DO AT NIGHT?

Hazel knew how ridiculous her reason was, but why would she care? They agreed to one year of dating, which meant they had dated each other for one year in secret without anyone knowing about it, and when they felt their relationship had been stable, they started to announce it to the public.

That was it. She told them the shortest version of their story.

"But he was indeed smitten by my beauty; you can ask him about that, right honey?" Hazel winked at Ranon.

On the other hand, Ranon simply smiled; he looked amused. "Yes," he replied. There was no other word he could say, since they were in this together. Shooting her down would mean shooting himself too.

All the people at the table looked at Ranon with surprised expressions. It was so rare to see him smile like that. He was a brash young man when he joined this family five years ago, which they could understand since he had to accept Ema, his ex-girlfriend, to be his stepmother.

But then he turned to be very cold. He couldn’t care less about this family as he worked their fortune, doubled their profit, and worked day and night, as if someone forced him to do that.

Therefore, to see him actually smiling like that, it was indeed a very rare occasion. But Ema’s eyes lingered a little bit longer; her calm façade dropped for a second before she put it up again, as if nothing happened.

However, Hazel had seen that. That woman was jealous. She had seen that look in Aubrey’s eyes. Therefore, she could tell almost immediately.

"Yes, I was, and am smitten by her beauty," Ranon confirmed that clearly this time.

And the dinner became a little bit awkward; at least aside from Ranon, Daniel, and Hazel, everyone there felt like they wanted to leave this dining room as soon as possible.

They couldn’t stand this side of Ranon. It almost felt like they saw someone else had occupied his body.

Meanwhile, Hazel was reciting how they met for the first time, answering their questions, and Ranon would confirm that in a heartbeat, no matter how ridiculous it was and how it didn’t even look like him at all.

Ema said nothing, and Denzel would listen while occasionally he would ask a few questions, still doubting that the baby was Ranon’s, though they were going to have the DNA test after this dinner.

Terra didn’t seem interested; she was the fourth child of Denzel. Her mother was the second wife, and she died during childbirth. Her story was the same as Hazel’s, but Hazel couldn’t tell if this family treated her the same or not.

Daniel looked relaxed; he kept it to himself and did not say much.

It was Laurel, who kept asking question after question, trying to find the loop in Hazel’s story, but she still couldn’t find any, which seemed to frustrate her.

After dinner, Denzel had prepared two doctors who would escort Hazel to the nearby hospital, which was not really surprising since the hospital was under the Leighton family business.

"Do you think they will play it fair?" Hazel asked Ranon when they got into the car. Denzel and Ema would drive a different car because they were going to witness it, just in case Ranon or Hazel were trying to do something funny with the result.

"No. He cares for his bloodline."

"Are you going to tell me that he is not going to abandon his own blood?" Hazel was being skeptical right now, especially when she had learned that Denzel only discovered Ranon’s existence a few years ago.

If Ranon knew what she meant with that, he didn’t say anything and decided to play dumb, because he didn’t want to answer whatever question Hazel had next, and also, she didn’t want to dig deeper into his past.

In the end, they went to the hospital, where Ema stuck closer to Denzel. She was too calm and composed; it almost looked like she moved by instinct only and was not actually there.

The process of it was not long, and they would get the result tomorrow.

"So, where are we going now?" Hazel asked. She stretched her body; she felt tired easily, and now she was sleepy. This was not good. Her body was sluggish, and all she wanted to do was curl up on the bed with hot chocolate while binge-watching her favorite series.

She couldn’t do that; there were people she needed to kill.

"We are going to the Coinesance Hotel," Ranon replied.

Hearing that, Hazel’s eyes bulged in surprise; she whipped her head to look at Ranon. "What? Where did you say?"

"I have a meeting with Arlo Barlowe in the Coinesance Hotel early in the morning; I want you to be there."

"Why?" Hazel couldn’t believe her luck; she only knew that Arlo would be in that hotel, but it seemed she forgot to look for the people that he had a meeting with. She would blame this on her pregnancy.

She read a story about how pregnant women tended to forget a few things.

"What? You don’t want to stay the night with me?" Ranon tilted his head; he then leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Don’t you miss me?"

Hazel blushed; she blinked her eyes and was not sure how to respond, but from the corner of her eyes, she could see the way Ema looked at her, and she shuddered. That woman could be an assassin with that look she gave her.

"Let’s create another rumor," Ranon added as he whispered in her ear so it was only she who could hear that.

Hazel immediately schooled her face and grinned. She pressed her head against his chest, acting like a demure young woman. "Sure, I miss that. What do you want us to do at night?"

Oh, Hazel could feel someone was creating a hole behind her back with her glare.

Ema then cleared her throat. "Can I talk with you?"
