Chapter 70: A BACKUP DRESS

"Stop this." Ranon felt his head was throbbing. Hazel could sing, but it would be good if she didn’t sing two keys above her key.

And even though the truth was: she was sad because he ate her last piece of cake and the song was not really sad, the feeling she gave off was the same, like she was mourning someone who was very dear to her.

Ranon swore, after this, he wouldn’t mess with her food anymore if this would be her reaction.

"Now tell me, are you going to wear your late mother’s wedding dress or what?"

Ranon actually turned down the volume of the music so she could hear his voice, and Hazel finally turned her head to look at him.

This change of topic interested her enough to answer him. "No, I will not wear that dress." This topic was the main contention between her and Greyson.

"But don’t you want to honor your late mother?"

"I don’t want to wear it. I have never met my mother; moreover, my father has never asked about it; he actually told me what to do. It was not a request. So, I don’t want to make my father happy because he managed to make me wear that dress."

"You didn’t want to wear that dress in order to spite your father." Ranon concluded.

"Yeah. More or less."

Ranon chuckled when he heard that. Hazel was being honest about her intention to spite her father, and the look on her face was funny. She looked at ease, even though from what Ranon heard, it caused a tension in the house.

"Okay, so, what are you going to wear?"

"Don’t worry about that. I have someone that I can rely on to get the dress."

"Don’t you want to have a backup?"

"A backup?"

Ranon actually knew about what Greyson might have done; he had expected it; that’s why he teased Hazel before, and he had someone he knew to prepare one wedding dress for her.

"What? Are we going to buy a wedding dress?"

"Yes, if there is a dress you will like to wear."

"Great!" Hazel didn’t oppose the idea of having a backup.

Aubrey hated her situation so much because she had overheard about the information that her father received about River.

She was still alive!

There was a sign that indicated she had been in contact with someone!

There was a high chance that River was still alive, and somehow, she was in contact with Hazel Rose.

Fuck!

Of course, Aubrey remembered that woman from the restaurant and also from the charity event. She actually had talked and had encounters with her a few times.

"It was not a coincidence," Aubrey muttered to herself. "There is no way it was a coincidence."

She could believe that was unintentional if it happened only once, but for the second time? And now, the wedding between the Rose family and the Leighton family was around the corner, where Arlo would attend.

Would River make an appearance there? Would she approach Arlo?

She would take her man...

No wonder Hazel Rose kept staring at Arlo. She actually looked at him closely. River must have said something to Hazel to gain her sympathy and get the help that she needed.

Aubrey knew how cunning River could be.

But what scared her the most was the fact that her stepsister was still alive!

She felt like the ground was crumbling, and she had nowhere to escape. If her father knew... if Arthur knew about the fact that she was the one who had tried to kill River, she didn’t know how he would react.

Recently, the relationship between them was not really good. Her father actually neglected her in favor of River when usually it would be the other way around.

Fuck!

Aubrey cursed out loud. She threw the phone in her hand across the room angrily, and the poor thing hit the wall.

She had been trying to contact Arlo, but that man had been avoiding her. He must have known about the news of River.

This was an urgent problem; they really needed to have a talk about this. A serious one. There was no way they could go on with it.

She refused to be in trouble when River came back.

"Why did he keep avoiding me?!" Aubrey pulled her hair because of how frustrated she was. "What’s wrong with him?! Doesn’t he care about the baby? Why didn’t he pick up his phone? Did he have someone else? Did he see another woman?"

Ranon introduced Hazel to his acquaintance. "This is Jacob," Ranon said.

Hazel then introduced herself. He was a tall, lanky man, but you could tell that he was the sophisticated type, as he looked at Hazel up and down as if he was trying to make a final judgment on whether he liked what he saw or not.

"Jacob," he said casually, and then led the way into his boutique as he talked with Ranon, complaining that he asked for the dress in such a short time. He grumbled that the dress wouldn’t be perfect.

Meanwhile, Hazel amused herself with the inside of the boutique. It was so beautiful; it looked artistic, though in her opinion, she liked Olivia’s boutique more since Jacob’s was too extravagant.

"Oh!"

Hazel startled because suddenly Jacob grabbed her arm; she almost twisted his hand out of instinct when he caught Ranon’s eyes.

"I think I have one dress that will suit you perfectly; come here. I will show you the dress."

Jacob tugged her with him, but Ranon grabbed Hazel’s hand swiftly to make Jacob let go of her grip on her.

"Lead the way," Ranon said casually.

Jacob didn’t look offended by this gesture; instead, he talked more about the dress he was going to let Hazel try on, though neither Ranon nor Hazel actually paid close attention to the details of it. He then opened the door for them to go inside his working room.
