Chapter 86: CROSSED THE LINE

"Not anyone could purchase a gun."

Hearing that, Hazel could only quote what Rize said to her. "Drop it, Rannon. The more you know, the more you will get into trouble."

Ranon raised his brows when he heard that. "Is that a warning?"

"Yes, I think we agree to mind our own business." Hazel’s voice turned rigid. She was being serious here. "I have so many skeletons inside my closet, and I am sure you are the same. I will not dig into it, and I hope you will give me the same courtesy."

Ranon said nothing when he heard that. Yes, he had a lot of skeletons in his closet, but if Hazel chose not to dig more into it, it was her decision.

But for him, he was going to know in one way or another about what actually Hazel was hiding from him and why she was very different from the information that he had gathered.

Although Ranon wouldn’t drop the topic, he acted complacent. Actually, he was playing a long game. He wouldn’t push her more than this because he knew the more he insisted, the more this woman would close off.

He would wait until Hazel lowered her guard while he dug more about her.

"Don’t worry, I will not bring trouble for you." Hazel grinned. Her facial expression changed in a split second. "You don’t need to be concerned about me. I assure you, I will not ruin anything, neither your reputation nor your image in the public. I will not bring my trouble to you." Hazel patted his arm playfully.

Somehow, it pissed Ranon to hear that. This woman drew a hard line between them, yet he kept quiet.

With Hazel being like this, there was no way Ranon would be satisfied to be left in the dark.

Meanwhile, Hazel was thinking to herself to shout out to her father for teaching her how to be a man when she was his daughter.

Now she didn’t need anyone to rely on. Or at least, that was what she thought right now...

When Ranon and Hazel left the house, Laurel came to Carl’s bedroom again. She tried to have a conversation with him because this kind of behavior was really concerning.

She didn’t know why, but recently, since he started meeting with his biological mother again, he has started to act out. This was not how he normally acted.

This was very concerning. She was worried about him. Even though Carl was her stepson, she had been in his life for ten years, and because of her condition, she saw him as her own child.

There was no way she would let him fall into the wrong crowd without saying anything. Usually, Carl would talk to her. They would have a discussion as they used to be very close with each other; the boy also saw her as a mother figure since Maria had left him when he was so little.

The first time Laurel met Carl, he didn’t have any recollection about his mother. That’s why they became close pretty fast.

The young Carl would cling to Laurel a lot.

"Carl, open the door. Can we talk for a while?"

"No. Leave me alone." The answer came right away, as if he had expected this visit.

"Carl. I am worried about you. Please open the door. Talk to me." Laurel didn’t see clearly how bruised his face was, but she saw a bandage on his head.

Carl used to be a sweet boy. He didn’t get into a fight; he didn’t even like to have a confrontation. He disliked that.

But right now, this was not the first time for Laurel to see him going home with a few bruises; that was why she was worried about him.

"Carl opened the door."

"No, go away! I don’t want to speak with you!"

Laura gritted her teeth. She suppressed her worry and disappointment. This time was not the right time for that. It was not about her.

"Open the door, or I will ask someone to open this with the spare key. Why are you acting like this? Talk to me." Her voice was a little bit stern.

Laurel was anxious when she heard Carl’s footsteps. From the sound of it alone, she could tell how upset he was; and when he opened the door, Laurel saw his bruised face clearly. This was even way worse than before.

"What happened with you?" Laurel became even more worried right now. She raised her hand to touch his face, but to her surprise, Carl took a step back and pushed her hands away from his face.

Carl was already a head taller than Laurel; he looked more and more like the young version of his father.

"What happened with you, Carl? Why are you like this?"

"What do you want?" Carl asked her with annoyance.

Before this, Laurel had a few talks with James, Carl’s father, but he brushed it off as a phase. He only said as a teenager it was normal for him to act out. He used to rebel around this age too.

Therefore, there was nothing to be worried about. ƒreewebɳovel.com

But still, Laurel didn’t think this was normal; her own brother didn’t act this way even when he was in this age, like Carl.

"Carl, you need to tell me the truth. What happened? Why do you always bruise like this? Did you get into a fight? What happened with you?"

Carl narrowed his eyes; he was so angry. "You are too noisy. Mind your own business!"

The word stung, and it took a moment for Laurel to comprehend it. "My own business? How dare you talk to me like that? This is not how I raised you."

And in his rage, Carl said something that he regretted almost immediately.

"You are not my mother. Don’t act like one."

Hearing that, Laurel fell silent, and Carl realized he had crossed the line.
