Unrivaled Soldier in the City-Chapter 28: Human or Ghost
"Let’s just drop it? Are you an idiot? I’m the one who’s been wronged, and you want to just drop it?" Lin Kuang said with disdain, looking at Zhang Lianmei as if she were a fool.
Hearing Lin Kuang’s words and seeing his condescending gaze, Zhang Lianmei trembled with anger, her rage finally boiling over.
She stood up and walked over to Hu Run’s side. "Kill him. Take care of this," Zhang Lianmei ordered, her expression dark.
Hearing this, Hu Run’s expression shifted slightly. He was the Chief. If word got out that he had openly shot and killed someone in his own office, the media would have a field day. He could forget about keeping his position.
"Lianmei, we can’t do this. If we do, I’m finished. If the photos get out, it’s just an issue of personal conduct. With my connections, I’d face a demotion at worst. But if we kill him here, the situation will become disastrous!" Hu Run argued. This was no small matter. Arranging for Lin Kuang to get a life sentence or something similar was a trivial task for him, but openly killing someone in his office was something he couldn’t do.
Zhang Lianmei hesitated at his words. He was right. If news of a murder in his office got out, Hu Run would be utterly ruined, possibly even imprisoned. It was no small matter. Besides, Hu Run was still very useful to her; she was reluctant to lose her lover.
After a moment’s thought, Zhang Lianmei pulled the pistol from Hu Run’s waistband and aimed it directly at Lin Kuang. Her gaze, however, was fixed on Hu Run. "Run, I’ll do it. Then you have to guarantee you can get me out," she declared.
The woman was surprisingly decisive. Hu Run couldn’t commit the act because of his police uniform, but she could. With powerful backers like Hu Run and Liu Tiecheng, she could get out of jail easily, even if she were sent in.
"Alright, it’s the only way. Lianmei, kill him!" Hu Run said decisively, his eyes darting around. Otherwise, if those photos leak, I’ll be in a world of trouble. To avoid that, it’s best if Zhang Lianmei handles this. Afterward, with no evidence, I can rest easy. And with my help, she won’t have to go to prison. It’s truly a solution that benefits us both.
Hearing Hu Run’s agreement, Zhang Lianmei shifted her icy gaze back to Lin Kuang, who was still sitting leisurely on the couch.
"Lin Kuang, you brought all this on yourself! If you must blame someone, blame yourself for not finding a better master!" Zhang Lianmei’s face twisted with a hint of ferocity, her eyes brimming with murderous intent.
"Tsk, tsk. What a fine pair of adulterers. Oh, right, I forgot to tell you. I just recorded your entire conversation. If I were to post this online and let the media hype it up a bit, I imagine the two of you would become quite the sensation," Lin Kuang said with a smile.
"Lin Kuang, are you an idiot? You’re about to die. Do you really think your phone will fall into someone else’s hands after you’re dead?" Zhang Lianmei scoffed, her gaze filled with mockery.
"Tsk, tsk. You really think you can kill me? Are you certain?" Lin Kuang remained seated on the couch with a smile, his expression so calm it was as if the pistol were merely a toy.
"Lin Kuang, are you insane? Do you think you can dodge a bullet?" Zhang Lianmei, who had been about to shoot, couldn’t help but look at him with contempt after hearing his words. I thought he was some formidable character, but it turns out he’s just an idiot! If I’d known, why did I let him squeeze my breast? It really hurt!
"That’s right, I’m not faster than a bullet, and I can’t dodge one. However, I’ll move before you pull the trigger. Don’t believe me? Give it a try," Lin Kuang said calmly, looking at Zhang Lianmei.
"Lianmei, shoot! Don’t listen to this guy, he’s a complete madman!" Hu Run couldn’t help but blurt out from the side.
Hearing this, Zhang Lianmei nodded repeatedly, now truly convinced that Lin Kuang was a lunatic.
With that thought, she sneered. "You think you can dodge it? Go on, show me how!"
As she spoke, her shoulder twitched slightly, her finger curved, and she yanked the trigger.
But then, something bizarre happened. The very instant the bullet left the barrel, Lin Kuang vanished from the couch! That’s right, he had disappeared. There wasn’t so much as a shadow left where he had been.
At this sight, both Zhang Lianmei and Hu Run’s eyes went wide. They rubbed them in unison and looked again, more carefully this time. But no matter how hard they looked, the couch before them was empty. There was no trace of Lin Kuang!
"D-d-did we just see a ghost? Is that Lin Kuang a man or a ghost?" Hu Run stammered, swallowing hard as his eyes glinted with fear.
"He’s... he’s human... right?" Zhang Lianmei stammered beside him, her own voice trembling as she swallowed nervously.
At that moment, she wasn’t sure if Lin Kuang was a man or a ghost.
"I’m a human, a living, breathing human. Don’t be nervous." Out of nowhere, Lin Kuang’s amused voice sounded from behind them.
The voice made Hu Run and Zhang Lianmei stagger back in fright, both tumbling to the floor. From their sprawled positions, they stared in utter shock at Lin Kuang, who was now sitting on the office desk.
Lin Kuang simply watched them with a smile, apparently quite satisfied with their reaction.
It was just as Lin Kuang had said. His speed wasn’t greater than a bullet’s, but he could predict when Zhang Lianmei would shoot based on her movements. The instant her shoulder twitched, he had already moved from the couch. By the time she fired the gun, Lin Kuang was already sitting on the office desk, watching the scene play out.
"So? I told you you couldn’t kill me, didn’t I? You’re the Chief, right? Your men are rushing upstairs right now. Tell them everything’s fine here, or you won’t like what happens next." As he spoke, Lin Kuang casually took the gun from Zhang Lianmei’s hand and continued to speak with a smile, still perched on the desk.
Terrified, Hu Run swallowed hard and didn’t dare utter a single peep. He scrambled to the office door and shouted, "What are you all doing? The gun just went off by accident! Everyone get back to your posts!" With that, he slammed the door shut with a bang and turned to look at Lin Kuang, his eyes filled with panic.
"Hmm, not bad. I never realized you had such a talent for acting," Lin Kuang said with a laugh, toying with the pistol in his hand.
Hu Run broke out in a cold sweat and didn’t dare reply. The man before him was like a Demon King from Hell, filling him with absolute terror.
