Unwritten Desires-Chapter 37
Chapter 37: Chapter 37
Alex
We’d been standing by the stairwell for a while now and Adrian was leaning casually against the railing like we weren’t about to risk our whole mission and years of planning by involving a damn teenager.
There was a huge possibility that that girl could send all my plans down the bloody drain but Adrian said we were supposed to trust her.
My jaw clenched as I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
Trust.
That was one thing I could never do. One thing I could never give her.
Especially when I couldn’t still understand how she found out about me. Even looking into her background couldn’t help me.
Everything about her screamed suspicious and yet Adrian was letting her into our small circle with open arms and normally I wouldn’t let things like this happen but apparently I didn’t have a choice.
The less people that knew about my goal...the better.
I glanced at my wrist watch again, counting down the minutes we had left before we had to leave.
"How long is it going to take that girl to put on a wig and some damn clothes?" I muttered.
"She’s a lady, Alex." Adrian smiled, lifting his gaze from his phone.
"Girl." I corrected with a glare.
"They come late and dressed to kill." He continued, completely ignoring me.
I huffed, irritation bubbling just beneath the surface as I pinched between my brows. I’ve told Adrian that his love for women was going to get him in trouble one day.
He thinks I always say that because I’m always paranoid, but it’s because I actually care about him.
"So," Adrian continued, finally standing upright. "We’re giving her the USB right?"
"What? No." I stared him up and down.
Why would he even say a thing like that? There was no way she could pull that off.
"Well, do you want us to give her the RFID skimmer?" He queried, raising a brow. "You know that won’t work on his set up, Alex. We already talked about this. That bastard’s paranoid just like you are. His laptop’s shielded, bluetooth’s off, he’s using a goddamn faraday sleeve! We’d get nothing."
My temples pulsed. "Well what do you want us to do now? Giving her the USB is a huge gamble and you fucking know that. You can’t just expect me to sit back and leave the fate of my plans to what? An 18 year old."
Why didn’t he just understand? If all of this went wrong. I’d take the heat. Not her. Not Adrian. Me.
So I needed to make sure everything went right.
"Trust her Alex. Trust her."
"I swear to God if you utter that word again I’m going to rip your tongue out and..."
His deep chuckle interrupted my words and I just scowled at him. "Relax man." He raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. "Do you seriously hate her that much?"
Before I could even say anything to him, I heard a faint sound of heels clicking down the hall and we both turned towards the sound.
And then...we saw her.
"My my my." The amusement was evident in Adrian’s tone and I couldn’t even understand why.
She was...
She...
What on earth was she wearing???
I had told her that red wasn’t her color earlier only because I didn’t want her to wear the red wig. Adrian was the one assigned to get the hair and clothing for her and I didn’t bother checking them before letting her into the room so I didn’t actually inspect it myself.
Apparently she chose to ignore my comment earlier and wear the red wig. Why couldn’t people just understand simple things? Having red hair was no different from that stupidly bright hair of hers. The point was to blend in and get only the investigators attention. Not everyone’s attention.
My gaze lingered on the flowing long wig before dropping to her outfit.
Shit.
Something was definitely wrong with this girl. And it’s safe to say that the dress was far from what I expected.
Short. Way too short. The hem barely brushed her thighs, and the way it clung to her body...I fucking hated it. Or maybe I hated how it made her look—like she knew how to command a room without lifting a finger. The fabric was tight around her waist, tracing every damn curve I definitely didn’t want to acknowledge.
God, this girl.
The dress was a deep, midnight blue almost black under the dim lights of the hallway hugging her body like it was created for her.
Bloody hell.
This was definitely not the kind of dress you wore to blend in. Not the way I needed her to. And the way she moved in it, like she knew exactly how to get every eye in the room on her, made something coil low in my gut—annoying, unfamiliar and very much unwelcomed.
Her heels clicked against the floor, black, strappy, and high enough that they made her seem taller—more poised, more...dangerous. They made her already long legs look even longer, like some kind of trap.
The red hair I had indirectly told her not to wear looked so good on her that it was infuriating. And her face was perfectly painted with just enough makeup to make her look too put together for her own good. She had even swapped her glasses for contacts and it pissed me off that she looked even better without it.
Adrian’s laugh broke through my thoughts, and I turned to see him smirking like a damn idiot. "Look at you. You even looked better than I imagined. You should definitely consider dying your hair red sometime. Red is definitely your colour."
"Really." Her smirk widened as her gaze flicked to me and I didn’t need her to say a word to know exactly what she was hinting at.
"Definitely." Adrian’s voice rang from beside me.
I didn’t say a word. Couldn’t. My teeth ground together, jaw locked as I tried to keep my head in the game, but everything about her was so goddamn distracting.
"Alex? You okay?" Adrian teased, bringing his head closer to mine as he clearly noticed and enjoyed my discomfort.
I didn’t answer him. Instead, my eyes shot back to her taking in the satisfied look on her face and that was when it dawned on me...
She was doing this on purpose.
"What the fuck is your problem?" I climbed up the steps, closing the gap between us in an instant, her sweet vanilla scent hitting me like a punch straight to the gut.
It was incredibly annoying.
The way she always smelled like something soft—something warm. Like she didn’t belong anywhere near the kind of mess she’d walked into with us. Like she wasn’t made for danger. And yet here she was. In a dress too tight, too short, too damn tempting for someone who was supposed to just plug in a damn USB and leave.
But didn’t you want her to distract the investigator with her body?
A voice rang in my head and I immediately pushed it away.
I was right and she was wrong. And there wasn’t any thing that was going to change my mind.
Her lips parted slightly, like she was about to say something before she pressed them together staring up at me with a mischievous glint in those huge eyes of hers. "Why are you dressed like that?" I snapped, my voice low and sharp.
"So no one would be able to recognize me." She said in a deceptively sweet tone as she sized me up. "Isn’t that what you guys wanted?" She lifted her gaze to meet mine again, her long silky lashes fluttering like a silent challenge.
My teeth clenched as my pulse thundered in my ears. If I wasn’t careful, this girl was going to make me lose my fucking mind.
